Problem installing LinuxMCE 704 from DVD Quick Install
« on: August 10, 2007, 08:54:35 am »
Hello,

I'm not an expert user of Linux (I'd say I'm an advanced user).
Yesterday I downloaded the DVD image of LinuxMCE.
When I start the installation, it fails with the following messages, then my only option is to restart the PC:

Usplash: No usable theme found for 1024*768
  * Unmounting temporary filesystems
umount: /cow: not found

  * deactivating SWAP
  * unmounting local filesystems

umount2: device or resource busy
umount: /cdrom: busy - remounted read-only
umount2: device or resource busy
umount: /rofs: busy - remounted read-only

mount: Function not implemented

* casper is resyncing snapshots and caching reboot files
Please remove the disc (if any) and press enter...

When rebooting, there is of course no entry in my boot menu to select Ubuntu or LinuxMCE.

There might be other error messages before the last screen, but I cannot scroll up to review them.

As I live in Belgium, my download limit is quite low, so if possible I'd like not having to redownload the full DVD image...

my config is as follow:

Asus P5B-PLUS mb with Intel core 2 duo 6600 proc and 2*1GB DDR2 800
Sparkle 8600GTS GFX

Any help would be welcome
Thx

Can you please verify the MD5 checksum of the downloaded ISO against the one published on the site? Just to ensure the file is not corrupted.

Hi Kir,

I'd like to, but unfortuately I burned the image on dvd and deleted it.

I'll wait to see if anyone has a bright idea, otherwise I guess I'll have to redownload it...

Ok, remember I admitted not being an expert... lol

The installation terminated ok, regardless of the error messages below.

The only problem is that the boot manager didn't show LinuxMCE on the bootlist.

I had to go in the BIOS of the PC and make that SATA drive as the first bootdevice.

I don't know why, but I cannot have all my drives in the list at the same time. Either I have my only IDE drive, either my 2 SATA drives.

Any idea how I can have all 3 of them present ?

I'm still running XP on my IDE drive and want to be able to boot XP for my wife (yeah, she doesn't know Linux yet...)

Thanks anyway.

That sounds like my first encounter with Kubuntu and Linux.
When you install Kubuntu you need to have the windows disk (IDE) enabled so that the Grub loader will recognize it.

There's probably a way to update the grub loader, or you can edit it manually to add the windows drive (but again, both needs to be enabled in the Bios)

I edited my Grub loader to display Win XP as the default so that my wife could just reboot the machine to get into a "familiar" OS.
(what does your Grub.lst look like?)

If you can't have all the drives in at the same time it sounds like you may need to update your BIOS?
