I have a home-brew ir reciever to which I got the plans from www.lirc.org. I have installed lirc-0.8.1 and setup my driver, and already created my /etc/lircd.conf. If I do an orw the remote works flawless, but linuxmce cannot recognize the serial device at all. or even lirc. is there somewhere in the conf file where I have to point linuxmce in order to get my remote to work.

I'm not sure, but I think you need to go to the web-admin site > Wizard > Devices > Media Directors and look for the "Infrared Receivers" drop down box.  Select the one you have (at the MD it's attached to) and click "Update" below.

I hope that helps, I don't use I/R myself (at least not yet), so let us know how it works out.

Actually, you don't need to install lirc manually. It'll be done after you add appropriate remote on the media director page. As Zaerc suggested, choose your remote from the list or add a new one. It's easy to do. Just add a new device template, add there a new option - 'Configuration' and copy there lircd.conf content. After router will be reloaded LIRC package will be installed, /etc/lircd.conf will be created from your device template (option 'Configuration'). Also you will see the log in the /var/log/pluto - <dev_ID>_LIRC.log
