hardware recommendation for MediaDirector miniPC
« on: July 29, 2007, 12:00:20 pm »
...searched the forum for quite a while and got partly answers but none so far could convince me so far...

I'm searching hardware to be used as media director together with a 12'' Touchscreen. The MD should be mounted in the room so a fanless, less power consumption system would be appreciated. I came over DTResearch product and ordered a DT160 with VIA C7 cpu (1 GHz). But that one running embedded XP (no ressources for linux so far) and the video output is quite poor... (although video quality is not too much important to me but I don't want to forget about video comletely either...)

can anybody give an advise whether it would be better to send this one back and recommend me another similar product?

thanks in advance,
thomas

Have a look to TabletKiosk Sahara UMPC. Originally, it's shipped with WinXP, but there is a possibility to install on Sahara Linux.

depending on the hardware of that UMPC, i am not sure if a regular linux kernel will work on that without some patches.

According to producer of Sahara Slate PC i440D Tablet PC (http://www.tabletkiosk.com/tkstore/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=16&idproduct=205) you can install openSUSE Linux 10.2 without any patches :)

hey, thx for the posts. But my situation is that I have already the touchscreen wall mounted (in-wall) and I want and have to keep that one. What I was asking for was a mini-PC for the purpose stated in my first post. The TabletPC is nice but I don't want to mount a display somewhere in the corner under the table where nobody will see it. Should just have a working mini PC system...

Sounds like you're looking for one of these: FiireStation, and with a bit of luck they should be available in a few days.

Hi Thomas,

Any of the C7/CN700 or C7/CX700 mini-itx fanless motherboards should be fine (eg VIA EX15000 and NX12000 or Jetway J7F2) and  there are numerous mini-itx compatible enclosures that will mount behind and LCD/Plasma screen using VESA mountings. We have several on test here and they work nicely using the Openchrome drivers under UI1.

For good UI2 performance your best bet is to go with the fire-station back mounted C7 based box below. They are expensive though...

Hope the above helps you.

would you be so kind an tell me what system you got working with these motherboards already? Did you use PXE boot or installed ubuntu on harddisk?
.. maybe this question is very silly... but don't know right now where to start with a try to get UI1 installed on my miniPC. Can you point me to the starting-point maybe?
