Can anyone help me out with sizing the storage on this system. I'm looking to find out how many standard DVD's (Not HD) I can rip per TB of storage. I have roughly 2200 DVD's and would ideally like to get them all on the core.

Each DVD stores 9.2GB..(dual layer)
using that as a maximum, you can calculate your storage requirements.. lemme pull out my calculator...
9.2GB * 2200 = 20240 GB
Slightly over 20 terabytes should do it..
<LOL>
each terabyte is 1000 GB, so...
1000 / 9.2 =108.6...
so for each terabyte you add, you'll be able to store another 108 DVD's
keep in mind these are estimates.. if your going to use those sizes, you may want to set up a RAID array..

9.2GB is the max size for dual layer DVD's, but I'm sure most movies aren't that big. Anybody got an average size on DVD's. Fiire only offers a 16TB RAID cage.
Ideally, let me know how many movies you've ripped and how much hard drive are you using.

Maybe the movie isn't that big, but the ISO will be..
I may be wrong, but when you rip a DVD, I think it stores an ISO image... that way you have wll the menus of the DVD, features as well...

I stand corrected... just looked at my config.. in my movies store..
Matrix Reloaded = 6.7GB
Men In Black II = 6.2GB
Star Wars Ep.1 = 7.8GB
Star Wars Ep.2 = 7.7GB
that's all I've ripped..

Not a problem...
I'd still use 9.2GB as a rule though.. it's just icing on the cake when you have extra..
Also, filesystems and the like will likely add to the storage requirements..

I have 76 DVD's ripped. They are all NTSC SD (Standard Definition).
Most are 4.23GB including the id. Only a few are 7.53GB or 8.52GB
Space used, to date, is 242GB.
Typo. Of course, I mean't to say 342GB.

As to the size of DVD's it really depends on what kind of DVD's you rip. I currently have 107 dvd's riped that take up 954GB, which would work out to 8.91GB on average...
I'm currently thinking of just re-encoding a lot of those DVD's. I find that re-encoding them to x264 at a decent bitrate saves a lot of disc space and my eyes often see it looking BETTER than the original... My main consern is the lose of the menus and special features. Does anyone know of a way to re-encode a DVD, while still keeping all the menu's and special features... that I almost never use...

DVD's range from 4Gb to about 9Gb in size and they are copied to the Core as ISO's so are the same size as the original DVD. If I look at my personal DVD collection (which is nowhere near the size of yours it has to be said ;-) ) I have about 60% that are around 4Gb with the rest averaging about 8Gb. So if your collection has a similar spread then about 1320 will be 4Gb (ie 5280TB's) and 880 will be 8Gb (ie 7040TB's) Therefore if your collection matches mine in the split between 4Gb & 8Gb discs then your looking at about 12TB's of storage. However the bigger problem is the time it will take to rip them all! A DVD auto-changer might be a worthwhile investment just to automate the ripping process! Andrew |

Simply use another linux box or the desktop and use K9copy to rip all your DVD's to an ISO with a more manageable 4.4GB size and keep all the menus...etc. I get rid of all the languages I don't speak and can barely even notice any difference in quality.
