I am having the same issues. looking at the properties of the file it doesnt say that it is executable. I cant change the permissions on the file because I am not the owner of the file.

ok got Kubuntu in and running. I downloaded the installer package, after I installed, the install linux mce icon still wouldnt work, even tried a reboot and still nothing. I ran it from the command line and it said that it needed gksu installed. I installed that, and still get nothing when I click the Icon from the command line this is the message that I get.
test@test-desktop:~$ gksu /usr/share/mce-installer/mce-installer.sh X Error: BadDevice, invalid or uninitialized input device 167 Major opcode: 144 Minor opcode: 3 Resource id: 0x0 Failed to open device X Error: BadDevice, invalid or uninitialized input device 167 Major opcode: 144 Minor opcode: 3 Resource id: 0x0 Failed to open device test@test-desktop:~$
I am also using the latest version of Kubuntu. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the link. I did the stuff recommended in that thread, and still get nothing, I click on the install icon, it asks for the password but then i get nothing. I used Kate to edit the file instead of VI, and actually forgot what permissions the file had before so I gave everyone RWX on it, would that cause any problems?

Also I reinstalled the package file from the site after I edited the xorg.conf file. and when I run it from the command line I still get nothing.

Dear one and all i belive iv found the ans. After about my 99th time of trying to get MCE to install, i was nearly reddy to give up when i though hold on. Im using the most upto date vertion from the ubuntu site. Needs to be the 6.10 one found on the mirrors here http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu-releases/6.10/ubuntu-6.10-desktop-i386.iso. You just got to put up with the crap download speed of around 512k a sec so good luck one and all may the pengin be with u (oh and before you ask yes it works YAY)

The best I can say is "Works for me".
I followed the instructions exactly and didn't have to modify permissions on the script or anything. Just clicked the icon, waited an extraordinary amount of time and eventually it started.
