No X on Poweredge 2850 - OK?
« on: March 30, 2013, 04:17:22 pm »
I installed 8.04 on a PE 2850 last night, I can't get X to run with the onboard ATI Radeon 7000 and according to Dell, there appears to be no way to either disable the onboard video or to add another card.  I get the "failed to setup X" screen with a red "OK" button that doesn't do anything.  It has the restricted ATI driver installed (or at least it says it does).

A few questions:

1. Has anyone had any luck getting X to run on a setup like mine?

2. Since I only intend to set this PE up as a dedicated core server in the garage - does it need X running at all?

3. Since I am an end-user and not much of a techie, how hard is it to set up a dedicated core without Sarah's lovely and patient assistance?

4. Would it be better to wipe the 8.04 and try the 10.04 installation?

Thanks

Thanks.

Does a dedicated core need to have X setup?
