I received a new ZCS101 w/RS-232 interface. I have done nothing else with it other than power it on and connect serially to a PC. I cannot get any output despite repeated attempts at differing baud rates and serial port settings. It just looks dead. My question is whether I have a bad expectation -- should I be able to enter ASCII commands? It is the case that there is typically no firmware on a fresh unit?

No you can't. It uses a binary protocol. When you don't send a valid frame, don't expect reply
