Benifit of using LinuxMCE for security :
« on: August 06, 2012, 09:07:00 pm »
Hi,

I bought a Foscam FI8910W Wireless IP Camera recently. Install was very straightforward and it is pretty easy to use. Features are ok. My main use is for in house security and using the motion detection.

Still testing and tweaking it, but I was wondering if LinuxMCE can be beneficial for such a small setup. I only have the security camera and for now only like to use the camera with LinuxMCE to send an alert mail when there was a detection and maybe save the pictures on an online storage.
Would LinuxMCE be the tool for me, or is it overkill too bloated and I should stay with the default Foscam firmware?
Have been a Linux user for some years now, so using Linux and diving into some scripting I consider to be a challenge and not a problem.

That all depends on where you want to take it...

If security/home automation is all you have in mind,... LinuxMCE might just be a little overkill. If you imagine that you'll "get the bug" and want to do more with it into the future,... then you could start there and work your way up to the rest of it's capabilities.

Just keep in mind,... I am frequently reminded that Linux experience does not necessarily translate to LinuxMCE experience,... It gives you an advantage on some back end stuff, but the other pieces are more involved than just that (DCE router, the wrappers for it for devices, SQL, MythTV, the deviations between LinuxMCE and a standard distro in terms of configuration, etc.).
See my User page on the LinuxMCE Wiki for a description of my system configuration (click the little globe under my profile pic).

For now, I don't think the multimedia stuff and home automation that is included in LinuxMCE. That said I am still interested and might try it out later. Thanks for bringing up Zoneminder hari. Seems more like the project I was looking for at this stage.
Hopefully it is matured enough to be useable.

Or Kmotion... its worth looking at that too. Kmotion is probably slightly easier to configure/setup. But Zoneminder is more feature rich overall. We integrate Kmotion into Dianemo (which is a commercial 'sister' to LinuxMCE that shares a common lineage).

All the best

zoneminder ran after doing an "apt-get install zoneminder". The config via web admin was straightforward. The only thing to do besides that is adjusting the SHM settings.

Yes I agree the install process is perfectly normal. But configuring it is where it gets less easy because Zoneminder has so many features. Kmotion is less feature rich but simple to configure because of that.

But either does a very good job once configured.
