Hi,
I have a spare, powerful computer that I used as a research machine. I could use this as a media manger. Is there any conceivable advantage of this over a smallish, diskless media manager?  I don't think so but thought I'd check!

Not really, maybe better results with 1080p?

Alternatively, you could have a virtual MD (using VirtualBox), and then you will be able to use the machine as originally intended whilst running your MD.

I have this setup in my study (or will have once I've unpacked everything). It's a lightweight ubuntu + fluxbox installation with 2 screens, and I do linuxey stuff, run a Windows XP VBox (which is running CAD software) and a MD Vbox, simultaneously! And the machine isn't THAT powerful.

Hi,
How is the sound card virtualization of virtualbox? I would prefer to have TWO virtual MDs in there, one for surround sound on sound card 1 (SPDIF), and one for hi-fi stereo on sound card 2 (coax or SPDIF). I know that VMWare fusion on the Mac does not allow this kind of thing :-(

I am not an audiophile by any stretch of the imagination, so cannot help you there I am afraid.

I don't view Virtual MDs as a rock solid, robust solution (although under 1004 it is VERY good) - for me it makes sense as my "normal" desktop is in the room anyway, and the MD is only really for occasional use (when I fancy watching some TV mainly). I wouldn't consider a separate MD.

Maybe you should though.

Yeah I will give it a whirl. The PC has two network interfaces which leads to all kinds of pain when trying to use it as a native MD. But maybe virtualbox is a good idea. Will let you know!
