First test of Dianemo 10.10 to Dianemo 11.04 upgrade

Just a heads up that we have successfully tested the upgrade of a standard Dianemo 10.10 NerveCentre installation to Ubuntu 11.04 using the standard Ubuntu upgrade procedure. We have logged a few minor issues but overall it was a completely painless upgrade with a normal reboot back into Dianemo at the end.

I should stress that this is a test of the process and should not be attempted yet by end users. When we are confident that we have any issues addressed then Dianemo users will get notified that they can Upgrade is the wish too.

Expect more updates on this here in this thread in the coming few weeks. If you have any questions relating to upgrading please post them in this thread to share them with others.

Further testing underway on Ubuntu 11.04

Basically these tests are about proving that our new build system and packaging has successfully made it possible to both upgrade and existing Dianemo installation from one release of Ubuntu to another... just by doing the standard canonical upgrade and is about testing a clean install of Dianemo 10.10 on a new install of Ubuntu 11.04

The objective is to make it as easy to transition to a new Ubuntu release as it is on a desktop system and I have to say we are very close indeed to achieving that.

So far the tests are going really very well indeed with only very trivial issues coming up - all of which so far have been simple a quickly fixed. We are really pleased with how these tests are going and they underline how good the new build system and packaging are - all credit to Uplink for re-inventing how we do this and pulling off more 'magic' (how Jobs'ian that sounds lol!!).

Well our build system and other underlying processes are now very different from LinuxMCE. We basically took a very different 'road' when re-engineering for our transition from our 07.10 based release to our current 10.10 release. The LinuxMCE Devs stuck with what is basically the Pluto build system while we decided to design a new debian/ubuntu friendly process so that  we could maintain close compatibility with each Ubuntu release and provide a smoother process for updates/upgrades.

Our new build system is not GPL currently as it was only ever intended as an internal system allowing us to produce Dianemo releases.

There is no way to upgrade a Dianemo 07.10 system to a Dianemo 10.10 system without a complete re-install of the system software i'm afraid. Once upgraded to Dianemo 10.10 then upgrades to future releases are possible due to the new Ubuntu/debian compatibility we built into the new release.

Anyone with a Dianemo 07.10 system who would like an upgrade should contact us with their system installation ID (**Dont post your System Installation ID here in the forum though!**) and we will assist you.

Beside that it is not released as GPL(yet) are there other reasons it is not integrated in LinuxMCE? I would say both projects would go smoother the more they are in sync and can use/help each other. I'd rather see the Linuxmce devs make functional improvements then in staying up to date with updates if that can be arranged differently ;-).

Well Dianemo is a Commercial product based on the same core software originally and it remains in overall terms very interoperable. As a commercial entity with a license to build technology on top of the original Pluto sources we have differing objectives in terms of functionality and what and where development resources will be deployed. So there are no plans to bring Dianemo & LinuxMCE together into a single project.

I understand you have to make money. Just thought that keeping up to date with the (k)ubuntu releases is a basic thing and you would be more helped by having the LinuxMCE guys focus on other things instead. that's all.

By the way: ever thought of putting a pricetag on some closed improvements you made and see if the linuxmce community is able and willing to pay for it to make it open source? I suppose the main part of your and linuxmce users base are totally different so it would not affect your normal business that much.

We have no plans in that area at all.
