Sorry if this has been asked before but can you use a desktop computer as a media director while still in use. I want to know to setup house wide audio without buying a ton of squeeze boxes which I can't afford given the steep price.

You can run squeezeslave on multiple devices , low cost routers, switches, NAS, Media directors the cores as well as Windows PC's.
LMCE see's them as squeezeboxes and can control them from any orbiter.

Yes Squeezeslave is very reliable in our experience and as tkmedia says above really performs as a physical squeezebox would from an audio/api perspective. It uses very little cpu so will run on pretty much any kind of machine with a soundcard (or cards...you can run several instances of Squeezeslave + soundcard on a single machine)

All the best

Squeezeslave is very good, but make sure to pay attention to the quality of the sound card. Personally I run a Squeezebox 3, here in Sweden you can get them used for less than €80 and that's a bargain considering the sound quality.

And one more thing, if you happen to have an iPhone - iPeng now has an built in Squeezeslave. Costs approx €10 and gives you a quite ok solution. Works perfectly with LMCE.

Thanks a lot for the help. If you don't mind me asking one more question, if I pause a song on a single squeezebox or squeezeslave will it pause all the music in all the zones?

Only if the players are synced; if not the are controlled one by one.
You sync the players in the web GUI or from iPeng.
