Boxee, kinda a fun little addon for just media
« on: February 10, 2011, 09:13:25 pm »
Hey all,
I just wanted to share with everyone a neat little media setup that I was using along side LMCE. I am sure some of you have heard of it.
My wife didn't like all the extra bells and whistles in the LMCE orbiter so I set up a boxee box downstairs and mapped it to the core and had it scan my media. It imported all my IDE Tags and went out and found some that I didn't have before. It was pretty neat.
Worked pretty good for just media.

anyway... carry on..

Yeah I agree Boxee a pretty nice UI and it does a good job of automating the indexing and tagging your media. However its UPnP implementation is a little broken right now...which is a shame as its built on top of XBMC and that has a very nice UPnP capability. XBMC also has an excellent iPlayer add-on that with vdpau plays even HD content with fantastic quality at full screen.

So for now we're focused on using XBMC controlled by Orbiters over UPnP

All the best

Thom, slap me if I'm wrong, But I'm sure we can create "Mini Orbiters" that only have media menu's or Lights Menu's. For example an inwall touch orbiter in the passage, will only have options to control lights and security. A media orbiter will only have "Media" options available.

hey,

maybe i'm wrong but why should i use xmbc/boxee or other systems when lmce includes erverything and more???
Ok, i've never used another system but i know that they look good and there are a lot of programmers behind the project but as Thom said in another post: don't talk, contribute - so lmce would look also fency...   ;)

now i experiment with speech recogniztion (sphinx4) - and yes, if it looks good i will contribute it to the project...

just my 2 cents...

My view is that we need to focus on a more limited set of areas and do those extremely well. One area that LinuxMCE excels in is the ability to integrate pretty much any other device and allow for the control of or the interaction with it. In that sense we see integrating with Boxee, XBMC, Sonos, UPnP TV's as more of the same.

However with UPnP devices and Media Renderers in particular we can use these as headless MD's that we use an Orbiter to control. This seems to us to be a perfect combination in many ways.

UPnP/dlna rendering/control and the touch-orbiter concept are some of the most progressive and exciting ideas I've heard for this system in 3 years!  Andrew it's great to hear you are consistently contributing back to the community while evolving your product!  I do worry about the idea of 'limiting' existing areas of lmce though.

Thanks Andrew!  :)

Well 'limiting' is probably the wrong word...'focus' might be better. I guess what I am saying is that we need to be more horizontally organised instead of vertically. Vertical being where you try and do everything internally and in the process often replicate capability/functionality that already exists elsewhere.

A good analogy would be the big old vendors like DEC or IBM who's model was to do 'everything' and lock users into their products and services. I think we need to recognise that sometimes other projects or solutions are better and spending time replicating that internally is just not a good approach - its better to embrace that other project or solution and integrate with it.

Anyway this is only my opinion and its not in anyway a done deal.

All the best
