DivX problem
« on: October 19, 2010, 09:10:47 am »
Hello All,

I have problem whit quality of image when watching divx(avi) files. Normal splash screen UI2 is perfect. But when there is fast action on move i can see lost of vertical lines on screen.

My hybrid(last snapshot, DVD install) is DELL 755/4GB ram/Gigabite 8600 GS video card connected true hdmi to full hd lcd.

I was trying to update Nvidia drivers according to wiki (http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Display_Drivers) Every thing goes fine exept "sudo cat /proc/driver/nvidia/version" showing no file or directory. And when I reboot hybrid i still can seen Nvidia drivers 195.10.16 so default ones.

Can You please tell me if this can be drivers issiue, and if it is what im doing wrong in drivers upgrade.

Best regards,

Ziemek

vdpau is responsible for hardware acceleration in video decoding, so its generally a good idea to have it running. as for the lines in your movies, thats called "tearing" and as far as I know its happening with alphablending activated for the ui. Instead use overlay, which doesn't look quite as fancy, but gives you better readability for the menus...and of course gets rid of the tearing.

type dcerouter or 192.168.80.1 in a browser.
Click left on Media directors -> new screen.
View the media director with which you want to see the movie and has an Nvidia card.
On the bottem of that media director, you see "acceleration", usually that is on XV or auto, select in the dropdown menu, vdpau.

Hi,

My Core/Hybrid has a GT220 and my MD has a 6600GT, i always thought they are more than capable in showing a movie correctly :)
sadly i also see those 'vertical lines' (on GT220 and 6600GT) but not that much.

Is it because i selected UI2 with alpa blending or because i left the default preference for MD in the WebAdmin?

Maybe someone can give a detailed explanation as to what all the options for video and sound in the WebAdmin are, what options you have and what they do.
I would love to help and make a Wiki page for this, if someone could help me with these details.

Raymond

Hi,

First I made change to vdpau in webadmin, but that didn't fix problem,

Than I change UI throe video and sound set up, divx are ok but menu looks poor.

I also think that my hardware is enough powerful to handle that, so problem is probably in Linux.

Zim And Raymond,

I had the same problem (Tearing)
In WebAdmin i changed the MD acceleration to xgl and medium not vdpau. That fixed it for me.
Ui2 with alphablending. GT8600
But there is a 10-15 sec delay when the movie starts.

thats exactly what i mean....
you did this,... he did that,....
i do not mean this as a offense to anybody but its not clear what to do.

thats why i want to start a wiki, with some help from someone who knows what all the options are.
wat do these options exactly do?
and what is best for what hardware?

i get the tearing with dvd's i ripped with LinuxMCE.
to my understanding vpdau is the best there is and my gt220 is overkill for 'just video playback' so why isn't this options working?

really i think a full explanation of all the options for future reference is needed.

Raymond

Raymond,

Hope this helps,

From the wiki http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/How_to_Select_Mainboards_for_Your_LinuxMCE_System
Quote
Video Decoding in CPU or GPU
GPUs generally include hardware that is more efficient than CPUs at decoding video for playback in real-time. Using a GPU to perform decoding is sometimes referred to as GPU offloading. In order for LinuxMCE to use GPU offloading, linux developers need to have a way to access the hardware decoding features of GPUs.

Up until around the end of 2008 there was no mainstream way for linux developers to access the hardware decoding features of GPUs. What this means is that all video decoding in LinuxMCE 0710 is performed by the CPU.

Around the end of 2008, nVidia released an API called VDPAU that provides access to hardware-accelerated video decoding on some late models of GPU.

As of March 2009, there were no plans to include VDPAU support in LinuxMCE 0810. There are, however, rumors of successful GPU offloading from users of the video players that LinuxMCE is based on. As of May 2009, there are also LinuxMCE users who are working towards patching LinuxMCE to use VDPAU.

Until LinuxMCE supports GPU offloading, we recommend that you select your mainboard and CPU such that it is capable for decoding video using the CPU only. When selecting your GPU, you may want to consider one that might one day support VDPAU GPU offloading.

Seems that vdpau isnt really supported yet. I read somewhere on the forum that there are still problems with vdpau. Thats why I use XGL

Ok, thanks Karel,

So GPU offloading still isn't supported at all in LinuxMCE?

XGL is the second best option? what about opengl and the others?
just want to get the most out of my hardware :)

thanks,
br,
