can you please give us the output of lspci -nn ?

also, you may want to try using a different graphics card (if onboard, disable the graphics chip in th bios)

I don't have an onboard graphics card

I don't know how to get the contents of lspci up here. I am on a different machine.

But I can see VGA compatible controller [0300]: something:00.0 nVidia Corporation GeForce 8400 GS [10something:06e4](reva1)
part of my screen on the left is cut off

If the machine you are on is a windows machine, use putty

ssh into 192.168.80.1 and log in.

Run lspci and at right click the title bar and choose "copy all to clipboard" and paste it here.

No.

The only thing providing DHCP must be the core.

This is only correct for the internal network. The external network can and should have a DHCP server running (if you have a local outside network).

Now can somebody please comment on my xorg.conf file, I still think it should have more info in it. If the xorg.conf log shows e.g my monitor make, model and even manufacturing date, shouldn't some of that show up in the xorg .conf ?

Yes, absolutely correct... however you should not be trying to ssh over the external (internet) assuming the other PC is on the same (internal) network, it should be at 192.168.80.1 and assign everything else. Almost every unexpected AVWizard behavior I have had, btw, has been rooted in a bad network setup. I assume the reason for that is beyond my sphere of understanding.

Let me just explain my setup: Currently I'm just trying to fire up my core. My core has nothing attached to it on the internal network although the 2nd NIC is installed. It connects to the internet through my external network's router via the other NIC. There is only 1 graphics card - the Nvidia 8400. The mobo has no built in graphics card. Only 1 x 500Gb HD currently - once it's up & running I'll add some TB drives with Raid for storage.

 Thanks for your xorg l3mce. It certainly contains a lot more info in the nvidia & monitor sections than mine which presumably points to a nvidia card problem.

So assuming I have a graphic card problem I want to try this again: http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Display_Drivers.

I have tried this previously but ran into various problems which caused this thread to start.

I have since managed to download the new driver as per Zaerc :

 (Still cant get pkg1 version shown on the Display Drivers page to work)

However when I do the sh for this I get: No such file or directory

Also when I try telinit 1 my core starts up the Kubuntu screen and then freezes.

So I need to get past these problems.
