« on: August 28, 2010, 02:08:53 pm »
Hello,
I am from the windows site.
I will test linux to get a windows7 mce alternative.

How ever, I install "kubuntu" and it start a graphical interface.
I see a icon it called "MCE install" and I start it.
After reboot I have only a command prompt.
Following lines is displayed:
unbuntu 8.10 mediaPC tty1

mediaPC login:

OK I login and after this the following line is displayed:

media@mediaPC:~$

What can I do to start the mce funktions? Where is the graphical interface?

Thanks

user

You could try the net-installation: http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Installing_0810

Thanks!

OK, I use

sudo su - #This might ask for the password you specified earlier during the install of kubuntu.
apt-get update

so many error messages will display:

"http://security.unbuntu.com/......... can not take   "security.unbuntu.com"  can not use" (sorry is free form translate from German)
use >>apt-get update<< to solve this problem
root@mediaPC:/home/media#

How can I check the Internet connection?
Or is it a other problem?

Thanks

user

the easiest way is to do a fresh kubuntu install first (without "mce install") and then follow the wiki for internet install exactly

Thanks!

I install kubuntu-8.10-desktop-i386.iso and it is up and running.

But how I get to next sep: "Run aptitude update and aptitude dist-upgrade to get the latest Kubuntu updates."

I mean, it needs a Internet connection?
But if I config eth0 for my static IP router via knetworkmanager, it will be safe for eth1 only.
I mean it must be eth0 for the motherboard network card?

How ever, how can I get to a internet connection in linux?

Thanks.

Thanks!

I can not get to a internet connection.
I create a "New Connection" for eth1
manual IP
IP Adress ...IP of the PC
Netmask...255.255.255.0  clasC
Gateway...routers IP
DNS Adress...routersIP

But the connection will not work!

What is eth1 ? I have only a motherboard networkcard. How can I create a "New Connection" for eth0?
How can I start a created connection?

Thanks.

your core needs to have 2 networkinterfaces, so add a second PCI or usb-card! also check the wiki and manuals to get an idea how LinuxMCE works and what it is about.
LinuxMCE is not just a stupid mediacenter, it's waaaayyyy more.

It really looks like you used the wrong option to install kubuntu in your first post.
If you boot with the DVD snapshot it has a specific option for ubuntu install for LinuxMCE. Choose that option for ubuntu install.

Make sure you have your internet connection connected to your eth0 (most likely your onboard nic).

Do a sudo apt-get update && apt-get upgrade

Then reboot and click the MCE install button on the desktop.

If for whatever reason your nics get swapped during ubuntu installation, just switch your cables.

Try again please, and read up on network cards in linux and things you can do about it if your nic's keep you from connecting. I have never had to "setup a connection" myself, should not be needed.

Hope this helps,

Richard

Thanks!

"Make sure you have your internet connection connected to your eth0 (most likely your onboard nic)."

I will do it soooo gladly!!!!

Status for  eth0  is  "No Carrier" ????

Why I need two network cards?  I do not have two network cable.
I have a cable to a network switch and the router is connected to the switch. What is the problem?

I will use Linux to watch TV, MUSIK, video, pictures and go to some internet sites.

How can I setup a internet connection in linux????

Thanks.

Thanks!

I mean the linux mediacenter is not a mediacenter pc. It is more a server.

Pity, that linux have not a pc mediacenter solution like Windows7 Mediacenter.

I am not a programmer. I am a user!

Thanks for your help, but Linux is not for user.

Best regards User.
