you need to execute the command as: sudo ifconfig eth0 mtu 576
the issue is that you're executing the command as a user, when you need root access. $20,000 says the internet connection will work, the moment you execute the above command. -Thom

Unfortunately, I can't help anymore at this point. Everything should be working.
If you run iptables -t nat -L
you'll see that the NAT rules are in place to forward packets from the internal interface to the external one.
There is a variable in your setup, that is not known to me.

Long shot here but try disabling and then re-enabling the firewall in webadmin then retest your internet connection.
