boot to Kubuntu desktop or linux MCE
« on: June 28, 2008, 07:30:13 pm »
I did a fresh install of Gutsy 7.10 AMD 64 from two CD's.

I played around with this for a few weeks and when I'd go into Konsole, I would start at "speedy@AMD64".

After a few weeks, I decided it was time to install MCE 7.10 64 bit from the 2 CD version.

After installing MCE, I'm noticing that when I go into konsole now, I start at speedy@dcerouter.

Is there a way for me to setup my machine where I normally boot into Kubuntu Desktop and run the PC in Gutsy most of the time and then occasionally, re-boot into MCE to watch streamed content?

Any help would be appreciated.

I wanted to add that currently on a boot, I boot into Kubuntu with the following three login options:
1). Speedy
2) Pluto-Samba Share Helper
3) Pluto-Green

I've been picking Speedy as my login because this is what I was use to prior to MCE installation. However, in konsole, it shows that I'm at speedy@dcerouter which is confusing me?? Am I in Kubuntu or MCE? Why am I at DCE router?

thanks,
Speedy

Hi,

During the MCE installation process you'll have the option to run the system as a PC or as a dedicated MCE box.

From the installation guide...

Choosing How to Primarily Use the Computer
You have to select how you plan to use your computer, either:

Primarily used as a PC -- you can start LinuxMCE manually when you need it, or
A dedicated LinuxMCE -- you can start Kubuntu when you need it.
For the dedicated core server, choose the second option. If you have a power outage, you can then set the computer to auto-reboot and restore your system without intervention. (If you are serious about home automation, it is best to have a dedicated core server, anyway.) It is possible to access the Kubuntu desktop from within LinuxMCE (see below).

If you choose the first option and have a power outage, then you will require a boot-up script, cron scheduling, or manual intervention in order to restart the LinuxMCE system.

If you are just experimenting with LinuxMCE and/or primarily use the PC as a Kubuntu desktop, the first option is suitable. Also, if you wish to directly install LinuxMCE directly on a PC that will be used as a Media Director, but intend to trade its function back and forth between that of a Kubuntu desktop and a Media Director, also choose the first option.

(Many PCs that will be used as Media Directors can simply be netbooted from the Core, however, so you do not really need to install LinuxMCE on them at all if you intend to netboot (which is generally easier).)

When you <CTRL/ALT>F1 out of the Linux MCE Launch Manager window you'll get the dcerouter login: by default.  Username/password will get you username@dcerouter:~$ on a dedicated core.

On a MD opening a Kubuntu terminal session will get you name@dcerouter as well.

Hope this helps.

Hope this helps.

Hi - I chose use as a PC during setup per the hybrid setup instructions.

I no longer have my home network of other computers available to me. When I go into sambra share, I get linuxmce and then from clicking there, I get dce router and from clicking here i go int the public and private folders.

I lost Gnome and I think several other packages that I had under Kubuntu 7.10 prior to loading MCE on top of it.

Hi,

Just curious.  You said that you lost gnome (gdm - gnome desktop manager) or do you mean the kde (K desktop enviroment)?

I just want to verify we are talking about Kubuntu not Ubuntu.

Thanks.
