A little lirc guidance please
« on: January 04, 2008, 03:34:23 pm »
I need a little guidance with lirc please.  My Streamzap remote is still not supported in the 7.10 beta.  It is setup in Kubuntu and I have a lircd.conf file for it.  I can run irw and key presses register correctly so it's working fine in Kubuntu.  My question is about the instructions in the wiki:

LinuxMCE's infrared remote control module is based on LIRC. See http://lirc.org/ for details. LIRC includes an 'IR Record' utility to build a configuration file for a new remote control. Once you do that, then in LinuxMCE Admin choose 'Advanced', 'Device Templates'. Choose the manufacturer, for the Category choose Peripherals, Remote Controls, LIRC Remote controls. Type in the model of the remote and click 'add'. Then edit the device, add a device data "Configuration" and copy the LIRC configuration file into it.

Are the instructions talking about copying the lircd.conf file into it, or a different configuration file like a lircrc conf file?

oh well, I guess not many people have added an unsupported remote...  I guess I'll just copy and paste my lircd.conf file into the configuration template and give it a try..

I do have a question for the developers, I know you can't support every remote out there but the Streamzap PC remote is a pretty heavily supported remote in linux..  plug and play with mythbuntu, geexbox, elisa (the only remote supported last time I played with elisa)... and since Kubuntu 7.10 will install it automatically I would think there wouldn't be too much work to integrate as plug and play with lmce...  Is there just not much demand for the Streamzap??  I don't really want to spend 150.00 for the fiire remote and it goes against my nature to use anything with a MS logo on it (mce remote).

as you said, just copy the config file in.

As the development environment matures, new devices wil be added.

Hi,

Sorry for the slow response to your message... I read it and then go distracted. Of course then a few more private messages came in and your was showing as read! User error sorry!

Yes you need to copy/paste the lircd.conf for the new remote device;

/usr/share/lirc/remotes/avermedia/lircd.conf.avermedia

ie open the lircd.conf and select/copy it then in Web Admin paste it into the new devices Device Configuration field (which is far too small and requires some careful scrolling to make sure the paste operation actually worked). Make sure that the filed is 100% empty before you paste the new lircd.conf data into it... thats tripped us up before now!

Good luck... let me know how you get on

Well, apparently I'm doing something wrong..  I can't add the remote in the web admin...  Under Advanced I have not 'Device Templates'...  so I went under 'Devices' and then 'Media Directors' and then chose my hybrid and at the bottom I chose Add a remote...  then I added a new Manufacturer.. then when I tried to add a Device Template, nothing happened and the browser locked up..  tried several times all with the same result..  a locked up browser...

It's Advanced, Configuration, Device Templates...

Cool, thanks, I'll give it a try tonight...  is there a certain order that things have to be done in when adding a device template to keep things from locking up??  seems to be very picky...

ok.. in the webadmin I went to Advance, Configuration, Device Templates...  I added a new manufacturer (Streamzap) and chose the category, Lirc devices, Remotes, Peripherals...  now what??  I can't pick a Device Template because there isn't one yet.., when I click on create a device template, nothing happens...  there is no 'Add' anywhere on this screen to go ahead and add the device so no way to go back in and edit it anywhere else.....  I'm lost with this... I'll be the first to admit that I don't know what the hell I'm doing with regards to adding new devices...

OK. I ran into the device creation problem as well, with 7.10 beta2. I posted the issue in Mantis, and got a response/fix, and file the very next morning. (Big props to those guys)

The issue number is: 003786

The link to the fix, and the file, as to where to place it is:

http://mantis.linuxmce.org/view.php?id=3786

This resolved the issue instantly, however it never hurts to logout of the admin, do a "Quick Reload" of the router, and then log back into web admin   :)

I hope this helps.

Well I applied the fix..  still no go...  from the Device Templates screen, I added a manufacturer (Streamzap) then chose device category (Lirc Remote Controls < Remote Controls < Peripherals)..  then went down to Device Template and Add Device Template...  when I click on it, nothing happens....  so I'm stuck again..

Also, The Streamzap PC remote comes with a USB receiver...  won't I have to add the receiver AND the remote as separate devices??  Of course, so far I can't add anything...

Can someone out there who has actually added a new remote and receiver that isn't supported help me?  I'm getting frustrated and to the point of just buying a plug and play remote...  I just hate to waste 2 perfectly good remotes that work with other linux applications...  and of course it's getting old jumping up and running to the keyboard when I have to do something..

I've even made this remote work with linux apps that don't have lirc support so I know this is doable... the remote works perfectly with myth, xine, geexbox, elisa..  and I made it work with the XBMC linux port... I would even pay someone to help, but it would probably be cheaper to buy new remotes...

I as well am having a hard time with the streamzap :(
I've had it since I use to run a gentoo/myth as my media machine but switching to lmce I've lost it...would love to get it working again.  There needs to a wiki page for it as it does seem rather complex to newbs but when I search the wiki for streamzap I get nota!  Can someone give us a step by step on this?
