Cannot update media...
« on: October 15, 2007, 09:35:45 pm »
I know that similar issues are spoken of in other threads, but I do not believe that this is the same issue.

I set up my NAS box (using standard NFS shares), in LMCE, and it saw and started to import / list the media stored there.  During this process, I had to reboot the Hybrid.  Upon reboot, there was only ONE song in the audio list, nothing anywhere else.  I attempted to resynch from the admin interface, and UpdateMedia from CLI.  They both fail with the all-too-familiar:
Code: [Select]
01      10/15/07 12:42:50.248           Cannot find self in maplock! (0x80b47b4) (>2) alarm: AlarmManager.cpp:102  <0xb6af2b90>
ready to dump locks using logger: 0x80b4858
05      10/15/07 12:42:50.296           Dumping 1 locks <0xb6af2b90>
05      10/15/07 12:42:50.297           finished check for exceptions <0xb6af2b90>
05      10/15/07 12:42:50.297           OL: (0x80b47b4) (>1) alarm AlarmManager.cpp l:87 time: 12:42:50p (0 s) thread: 3064936144 Rel: Y Got: Y <0xb6af2b90>

As well, I've browsed the _media DB, and emptied it, in case that might have removed any possible corruption, but it hasn't helped...  there was a bunch of corrupted media on the NAS, so I've removed any and all that would not play or display correctly.

I don't know what else to do???

Yup, I'm a complete dumb-ass...  I reconfigured my NAS shares last night, to make for public and private shares, deleted the device and re created it on the admin page, but never gave an IP address for the NAS top-level device...  Of course, as a result, LMCE could no longer see the media, and all that other crap I went thru was probably just wasted effort and frustration...

Hope I'm the only one that's this dumb...

edit:  Well, the problem is NOT resolved, and it was NOT due to my erroneous setup of NAS...

At this point, the DB is completely updated.  However, NO MEDIA APPEARS in the gui lists (except for the ONE SONG, as before).  It CAN be searched for in the gui, but no list appears.

This is applicable with the audio menu (only 1 song of thousands shows up), video (nothing shows up at all), and pictures (only the Flickr stuff shows up).

This all being said, there is now a FAR more severe issue, and that is the issue of file ownership and  permissions, and Access Restrictions:  Of the 130+ Gigs of media I have, not quite half of it is adult material that my wife and I enjoy.  However, my 3 youngsters should have NO access to it, EVER.  It IS all stored in MY USER DIRECTORIES (Used LMCE Directory Structure), and I've Restricted Access in the web-admin...  However, when I turned on the TV to see how things were going, the screensaver was playing my private photo-collection, intermixed with flickr pics, but so far, has not played a single one of the several thousand public pics, nor still are ANY of them listed in the Pictures media menu...

So, the DB contains it all, it can all be searched, NONE of it shows up in the standard GUI, but private stuff is available publicly...  Seems to  me something's pretty wrong...

Any ideas?

OK...  So, here's where I'm at with this:

I moved ALL media off of shared directories, deleted shares from LMCE, as well as the host-device.

I, then, recreated a share, completely EMPTY, created the host and child-devices in LMCE, and told it to use the LMCE directory structure.  I figure, if LMCE CREATES the directory structure to it's liking, there won't be any permission issues...  It, seemingly, did so correctly.

So!!  Now that LMCE's got it's own directories on the share, I figure I can start copying my media back into it's proper places on the share.  Wanted to take it slow, though, in case I was just simply overwhelming the system with so much at once.  Copied a few artists' discographies into the public audio directory, and started to watch.  As each song is imported, which only takes a sec or 2, it DISAPPEARS FROM THE LIST, thus the last one imported being the only one remaining.

So, why's my music (and in the long run, the rest of my media) not remaining in the list in the UI?  At this point, I've even set up the NAS device to be pinged every 5 seconds by the server, because it seemed to intermittently disappear from the /mnt/device/ directory on the hybrid, but it's not helping...

I'm actually WATCHING MY MEDIA DISAPPEAR AS IT IMPORTS, RIGHT NOW, and there's not a damn thing I can do about it...  How frustrating!!!!!!!!!

OK, so now it's morning, I'm here looking at the system's menu-structure, in hopes that it just needed some time to settle, but it HAS NOT CHANGED.  The media IS NOT LISTED.  Again, however, I can hit the Search button in menu, and type nearly any letter, and a list of media shows up...

OK, so now, I'm going to reboot the Hybrid, and see if this changes any of the behavior of the menus...  Well, it did not.  The menus are still not populated by the NAS media.  I'm still at a loss...  What more can I do?

edit:  I guess, although I don't believe it to be relevant, that I should probably mention that my NAS is an older 800MHz box with 192 MB RAM.  It uses 2 older but operable HDD's for base Ubuntu system and swap, and on a PCI ATA66 card, 2x160GB drives in LVM2 RAID0 set, within which the NFS-shared directory is placed...  Relevance, as far as I can tell, is eliminated by the use of the NFS file-system...

I'm not sure if its the same problem, but I had issues with my NAS drive too. It didn't find any files there, despite MANY attempts to sync it etc. Have a read of this thread:

http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=2649.0

It might be the same thing? I fixed it in the end by deleting the device and adding it manually:

Hope that helps!  ;)

Well, it unfortunately was not the same problem.  I had read that thread (many times, actually), and many others, before I even attempted to add the NAS.  Because of your thread (and thank you for it!!!), I made sure to manually create the NAS to begin with...  Otherwise, though, my files ARE detected and imported, just NOT displayed in the UI Menus.  They can be found in a search of the media DB.

Thanx for the reply, and I'll post back here if / when I find or receive a solution...

OK, new update:  It's NOT yet fixed, but I THINK I'm getting closer!!

Basically, I just started playing around in the web-admin, and found that in the Browse Media screen, I get NOTHING but the Files $ Media | Media Browser header, and underneath, "No Attribute Selected."  Not sure what that means, but I'm guessing that it means that I screwed up the DB that holds within it the search attributes used to find files??

As well, very possibly indicative of the same or similar sort of issue, I found that by using the web-admin, I could move a file from one location to another (still on the same NFS share), and before it was automatically synced, add it to DB.  Then, it is visible in the media menu, but only when using the File Name sort menu, and only for a short time (somehow, during the attempted move, all 3 were deleted, it seems).

So, at this point, I'm wondering if I messed up the DB that handles media attributes and such?  Anyone know how to rebuild it without reloading?

OK, so nobody's got any ideas?  I'm still fighting with this...

Anyhow, a bit more progress:  Decided to rip a few CD's, and told LMCE to store them on the same NAS I have everything else on.  They show up just as they should.  Then, via the /mnt/devices directory, determined the file- and dir-permissions and ownerships that LMCE uses, and changed the pre-existing media to reflect all the same.  Also, made sure that NOTHING other than valid media was within the share, so that LMCE doesn't snag on a file it doesn't know what to do with.

From web-admin, told it to update media, and it failed again, same error, but seemed to get a whole lot farther than usual...

Still working on it...

OK, a bit more progress (as if anyone seems to care, anyhow...):

Did a full reload again (what a miserable process that is), even reloaded OS on NAS.  Manually added NAS, and amazingly, everything showed up correctly.  Then, in quite a hopeful state, I did a stupid thing -> I tried to use the LMCE system for what it's intended, and played some media.

Music was fine, video worked for the first few movies, and then I started viewing live TV and the box hard-froze.  Turns out, whatever happened froze the NAS as well (could be pinged, but no other response), and now we're back to the same problem:  Menus show nothing, search shows everything, porn shows up in the FAMILY's screen-saver, etc.

I think, based upon my own experience with this thing (more than I should have to have, at this point), that this thing is horribly broken, in it's current state.  Any word on the new version?  Gutsy's been out for a bit now...
