256  LinuxMCE / Users / Media director stuck in screensaver (8.10) on: April 29, 2012, 07:13:20 pm
I've got a pretty stable 8.10 installation running but haven't had the media directors on for long periods of time. Today the thinkpad (Ibm T30 notebook) has run all day and at the moment is stuck in screensaver and not responding to keystrokes or mouse clicks. The images are still changing but I can't get back to the onscreen orbiter.

Any ideas how to troubleshoot? Logs I should look at?
Is there a way to "force" the MD to respond from another orbiter? Perhaps one of the commands in /usr/pluto/bin? Or a DCE command I should send?

aha- I see that starting up the audio (playing music) on that MD from another orbiter works- it brings up the remote and back to onscreen orbiter.
The only other thing that I can think of checking is the screensaver pics- I know they're supposed to be a certain max size and I'm using my own pics which definitely aren't sized appropriately... and I did see some notes in the screensaver log about downscaling- perhaps this is tying up the processor or something? I'll try sorting that out and seeing if it has any effect.

Other suggestions welcome.
257  LinuxMCE / Installation issues / Re: AVWizard loop on: April 24, 2012, 08:58:11 am
Daniel, l3mce will get to this soon and give you the proper solution but when I was hacking around with my old radeon card, I also found my machine going back to scratch each time. From memory, the logic is something like this-

On boot, AVWiz will try to run itself if

- the conf is set to force it (as you showed it wasn't)
OR
- /etc/X11/xorg.conf does not exist
OR
- /etc/X11/xorg.conf does exist but the video driver is not what the script (/usr/pluto/bin/Utils.sh) determines to be the correct driver.

I would guess one of latter 2 is your situation. When your MD is up and running, do you have /etc/X11.xorg.conf? If so, what video driver is in there? Also, and I didn't check this, but I think the xorg.conf file cannot have multiple sections with video driver (even if it's the same) because the script checks the expected driver (eg. "nvidia") against what is in the xorg.conf file and if teh xorg.conf file returns
"nvidia"
"nvidia"
"nvidia"
that will not match the xpected driver "nvidia"... if you get my drift.

If none of this makes sense, just wait for l3 and he'll sort you out ;-)

Thanks for the feedback, l3.

Will try to have a squizz this evening and see if I can get it running.

Lastly, the other things we went over have been addressed, and the latest build and snapshot, as of today, should work much better and differently.
Thanks again.

If you build it.... they will download it.

Great stuff, L3. Gonna go start that latest snap download right now.

Sorry, you are quite correct, the desktop thing was mentioned in the *first post*. Will get my eyesight checked.

Hi l3mce

For me (on my hp xw4100 with ATI Radeon RV350) there was no /etc/X11/xorg.conf. It's tricky to determine any of this because although I'm able to come up in UI1 at 640x480 or something similar, I can't even drop to tty2 or open kde.... so I had to boot the install cd to live and mount /dev/sda1  just to see what's up...

Anyway, I had a look at the AVWizard_Run log and it looks as if the issue is with my ATI RV350 graphics card. I may be wrong of course (there was that one time ;-) but it seems to me that the script (AVWizard_Run.sh) is trying to run aticonfig and that there program doesn't like my card.

In the log file
Code:
/usr/bin/aticonfig: No supported adapters detected

A bit of googling suggests that the proprietory ati drivers no longer support my old card and that the only option is to use the open source driver instead. Does that make sense? Let me know if you have any other suggestions.

[preamble]
Sorry if I have the protocol wrong here... not sure whether to post on this thread or a new thread or to stick in the snapshot wiki or to submit a ticket or what what. Please feel free to chastise and guide me to the right thing
[/preamble]

Have put snapshot 5916 on both my old hp xw4100 workstation (P4 etc etc) and my i5 with sandy bridge graphics as hybrid.
  • In both cases I have observed the following-

KDE desktop does not run - see attached screenshot. Message is
Code:
kstartupconfig4 does not exist or fails. The error code is 3. Check your install.
    [/li]
  • On the xw4100 I didn't get the avwizard at all and default to ui1 but l3mce says (related thread) I must delete xorg.conf and reboot. Have yet to try this.
  • On the i5 I have to do the backport stuff http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Sandy_Bridge at the "failed to setup X" point as recommended which works fine but if I want to change resolution or UI level, and try to rebootwithAVWizard it doesn't.... I had to do the "fix" of modifying Utils.sh - the "exit 0" line that l3mce helped me with.... is this not yet folded into that snapshot?
262  LinuxMCE / Installation issues / Re: Intel Sandy bridge graphics on 10.04 on: April 19, 2012, 07:17:45 am
posde, you're a legend. thanks for wikifying.

I still can't get UI2-2 but I can get UI2-1 which is pretty cool for me and I think we're pretty much solved on this one.... any more detail can be added to your wiki spot. I will mark as solved.
263  LinuxMCE / Installation issues / Re: AV Wizard does not run - 10.04 on: April 18, 2012, 08:38:02 am
I just did a dvd install from snapshot LMCE-1004-20120417030025916 on an old HPXW4100 workstation and all went really smoothly - thanks lmce except, like the others, no AVWizard- just straight to Sarah, with sound and the usual home config etc. I haven't had time to look at the avwizard run log as suggested above or try the other "force avwizard" methods but I did press the More->Advanced->Video Res and Audio setup button to supposedly reboot to AVWizard and no dice.

Will look more closely when at home later. Again, UI1 with low res is no problem as it's core-only ultimately but getting to the bottom of it may help others.
264  LinuxMCE / Installation issues / Re: Intel Sandy bridge graphics on 10.04 on: April 16, 2012, 03:07:20 pm
Excellent... I will grab a dvd snapshot and give it horns. If it works, I'll mark as solved and also note the snapshot version.

Many thanks.
265  LinuxMCE / Installation issues / Re: Intel Sandy bridge graphics on 10.04 on: April 16, 2012, 10:13:30 am
Please report success in these sort of threads so they can be marked [SOLVED].

I'm happy to mark the thread solved but, as I understand it, currently, the fix involves doing an internet install. Is that correct l3mce? Presumably the same steps can't be followed for a dvd install or could they be run after the "failed to setup X" point? (we ran them prior to the first reboot)? Let me know if you want me to try anything else, otherwise I'll note the steps down and mark the thread solved.
266  LinuxMCE / Installation issues / Re: 8.10 install: failed to set up mdadm... (Running Diskless_CreateTBZ.sh) on: April 13, 2012, 08:23:10 am
To clarify re my tinkering- since mdadm is part of the RAID system, I thought there may be some issue with the fact that I have multiple hard-drives, so I checked the partitioning of the drives and saw that the 2nd one (sdb) was still partitioned with an NTFS file system and had a few other issues so I thought I should clean that up. After doing so, the diskless create script ran through fine.... I think. Had a problem setting up a media director but that's a story for another post.
267  LinuxMCE / Installation issues / Re: 8.10 install: failed to set up mdadm... (Running Diskless_CreateTBZ.sh) on: April 12, 2012, 01:37:22 pm
Too late... I tinkered.

So I created a normal ext partition on /dev/sdb with fdisk, then re-ran Diskless_CreateTBZ.sh and it appears to have run through ok! Holding thumbs.
268  LinuxMCE / Installation issues / Re: 8.10 install: failed to set up mdadm... (Running Diskless_CreateTBZ.sh) on: April 12, 2012, 08:03:42 am
Could be a known bug in mdadm as per link below:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mdadm/+bug/382535

I could try the suggested fix:
Code:
sudo ln -s /sbin/MAKEDEV /dev/MAKEDEV
before running the diskless create script but I wonder why no-one else has hit this error (apart from myself and am)...

Any suggestions from the gurus before I start tinkering?

Ok, may be related to my other post regarding the libdvdcss2 libraries.

Maybe it is a sources.list thing, I don't know but after the above, I tried running the Diskless_CreateTBZ.sh and failed at the mdadm.conf stage as per the messages below. I have done nothing (not even apt-get update or apt-get upgrade) after doing a basic install from 8.10 final dvd, then installing libdvdcss2 (after a fashion) and then running Diskless_Create.

Anyone have any ideas?
