Had a quick peak when I was at home a moment ago and I thought I'd solved it - the script appears to call /sbin/poweroff on the media directory. When I had a look at that it was a symlink to /sbin/reboot! Simple, so I changed the simlink to /sbin/shutdown and tried to power off the md from it's onscreen orbiter but it still rebooted! Didn't have time to tinker further... perhaps I missed something. Will carry on digging. Thanks for the pointers JaseP.
When I get that sorted, I'll tinker with suspend....sounds like a good option as well.

Pretty sure I also got a gamepad detected on my HP6710b notebook MD... will track down what it actually is and see if I can assist.

LinuxMCE / Installation issues / 10.04 external media identifier / id-my-disc not working for me
|
on: June 04, 2012, 07:52:01 am

Hi All
When I put an audio-cd or DVD into any of the drives (2 media directors, one core) on my 10.04 setup, the media plays happily but is not picking up the disk info - titles, names etc. I'm pretty sure these disks have done so before. Anyone else having this behaviour on 10.04?
Any tips on trouble-shooting? I gather it's an app called id-my-disc that runs but I haven't done any more digging than that apart from a cursory glance at some logs that hasn't yielded any epiphanies.
Edit: note, I haven't tried an apt-get update/upgrade so perhaps scripts have changed or been fixed since my snapshot but I'm a bit nervous to do that on an otherwise working system.

I looked also in the /etc/X11 folder on the core and the xorg.conf is missing
That's quite correct if it's headless. The xorg.conf is created when the video card is configured for X which won't happen with a headless core. Will wait for l3 to get back to you regarding when to upgrade your scripts or anything else. If you get a chance, drop by IRC and he can guide you through it... make sure you have ssh access to your machines - preferably connect to IRC from a separate machine so with all the reboots and stuff you can carry on chatting!

You probably need to wait for l3mce to finish off the changes he's busy with and then update/upgrade certain scripts. The xorg.conf gets created when the configuration scripts run... it will only be there when they run successfully, and there are a lot of changes being made at present, I understand... so the version(s) you have will probably need to be updated and then re-run. In the meantime, it might be worth posting lspci | grep VGA
run from the MD with the geforce.
I want to build my new core with that board, so I could do a headless install - but it would be nicer to have a hybrid install.
Axel, just a comment regarding headless install- I've had my first headless core running and I'm super happy with it. As commented elsewhere, why give the core anything more to do than necessary. You just have to get the hang of accessing the core from another machine on the network (via ssh and/or admin website). I'm still working through that but in general, I've found it to be the way to go. Although I can understand wanting to get the graphics working.... I did the same with my sandy bridge chipset before re-installing as headless.

Thanks for the comments guys, this is the kind of thing I want to hear.
JaseP, you're not a geek. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. And I hear your warning about Atoms and Atoms....
GolgoJ- good to know that in the rest of the world this is happening and I thnk we'll catch up here in Africa too. I'm coming out- I have a server closet!!! But one of the many awesome things about LMCE (to me) is the scalability of the system. For those that don't, it can still work and work well! Enjoy your comments about letting the discrete cards do the work as well. That makes sense too.
l3: don't use yourself as an example- you could make a commodore 64 play 1080p with sound over HDMI....
Keep em coming. Any other h/w setup comments welcome.

I haven't read your whole post, but anyway...
lazy Thanks for the thoughts. I echo most of the sentiment. I do have my hidden-away 10.04 core running quite nicely now but the reason I'm tinkering on the MD side is I'm trying to look at what sort of setup a less geeky person (than me, not you) might have- LMCE is all about devices, right, and what kind of lunatic has a server closet in his home? So if my father in law wants a setup, for example, I can't tell him to go "reboot the core"... no telling what he'll get up to. He needs a machine that sits next to the TV to put his beer on. I digress... Anyway, what *is* interesting is that you are pushing AMD.... which I haven't really looked at but will. And that, contrary to JaseP's previous quote, you seem to think Atoms will handle as MDs no sweat. Hmmmm.

Sorry to continue with the obvious questions but.... confirm that you did actually "burn the image" to the DVD, and didn't just copy the file to the DVD?
Also, perhaps post the snapshot version (filename of image) in case others have the same problem.

Is it an MD or hybrid you're trying to setup?
There's no way, IMHO, it will work with onboard graphics without doing the backport stuff because the chipset just isn't supported in 10.04. When you *do* see graphics but it's small and squashed, I think that is just the fallback to the Vesa driver that occurs when the whole configure and driver install part fails. I get the same thing with my old Radeon cards that are incorrectly assigned to the fglrx driver.
A symptom of that is no xorg.conf file in /etc/X11. Can you confirm that that is the case?
Can you
lspci | grep -i Vga as well?
----
I got the backport stuff working on mine and at that stage it wasn't folded into the snapshots. I don't know if it is yet but I doubt it. Also that was on a core which I have subsequently re-installed as headless.
Drop by IRC sometime and see if you can get l3mce to help... he's brilliant at troubleshooting this stuff. I'm busy building an HTPC at the moment that will probably have the same issues- there is the possibilty of discrete graphics but if the onboard can work, as you say, power saving and slot saving always good.

Thanks, JaseP, useful comments.
Regarding the Atoms.... presumably these will be ok for just playback and you're referring to capture machines requiring something more beefy? I had a look at the HDHomeruns... nice piece of hardware but quite pricey!
I was also looking at the Hauppage colossus PCI card for capture. Anyone have any experience with that one? Search on wiki/forums came up blank.

Go and get something from Dianemo (if you are in Europe) or from lmcecompatible.com (if you are in the North America)
