Users / Re: Screensaver - can't exit if it kicks in while using firefox

Ah... this might help me.... clicking on bottom left or right of the screen.

However, I did read the rest of the related thread and see that the computing screen, as Thom says, is not the ideal place to stick things. Don't worry -with regard to zoneminder I definitely want to integrate it better in future if I stick with it as a camera monitor. Ideally I'd like it to be a first class application like Thom says in the thread. A zoneminder client... *dreams*

Users / Screensaver - can't exit if it kicks in while using firefox
« on: August 16, 2013, 03:06:22 pm »
I wonder if anyone else has this problem?

I've added a web link to my zoneminder server so I can put the camera montage up on the screen. It's quite a nice way of popping the cameras up on the TV when you want to keep an eye on things. Anyway, if I leave it for long enough the screensaver kicks in.... which is fine.... except that then I can't seem to exit. If I press the keyboard or mouse buttons I get a pointer (which moves) but no matter what I click or press the screensaver stays on.

The only way to get rid of it at this point is to either do a quick-reload of the router (from another orbiter obviously) or ctrl-alt-f2 to drop to a terminal and then ctrl-alt-f7 to go back to the X session. That more or less sorts it out.

I must confess, I haven't tried with any other websites since this is the only one I leave on the screen unattended for long enough to have the screensaver kick in. Will test and check.

But, in the meantime, does anyone else experience the same behaviour? Does anyone have any suggestions as to a fix? And... is there anywhere you can set the idle time before the screensaver kicks in? Or turn it off temporarily? Obviously it is disabled for some applications like movies but doesn't make sense to have it generally disabled for web browsing unless you specifically request it for a particular link. I don't use the youtube much via firefox because it doesn't work very well with my z-box (I think it's the radeon graphics card) but I imagine if people are watching long videos on you tube without touching the controls the same could occur.

Any thoughts?

@toppot: just hot air from you, as I did expect..
Even if it turns out to just be that.... I for one appreciate the effort.
Discussions like this teach me a huge amount about the system (not to mention the personalities involved  ;) ) and that is really valuable. It gives me keywords to google, search for, helps me to dig in the code and to understand the architecture. If someone is looking at doing something similar then searching the forum is always a good place to start and if some of the groundwork has been done that can only help.

@toppot - keep at it and I hope you are able to get something going here. I'm sure it will be of great value if you are and I hope to be able to help in some way.

==========================================================================
Releases can be found here: http://lasmarthomes.com/qorbiter/

Super... I haven't tried qorbiter for a while... I think the last one I downloaded was from the play store.

QorbiterQT5: On my phone (HTC one-v ICS) I tried to download and install QorbiterQT5 but when I run it there is simply a "Your appliation encountered a fatal error and cannot continue" with an OK button.
QorbiterQT4: On HTC one-v ICS: Downloaded, installed and ran (connected to my core) but functionality seemed rather limited. I'll post some details this weekend.

Will try on my cheap tablet and wife's Samsung S4 as well.

Do all the other config steps that are outlined somewhere on the wiki still apply? (skins, setting up the orbiter on the core, creating the config xml file on the device etc etc?)  If we install a new version should we update all of that / redo it at all? Does the core need an update/upgrade to get the latest stuff on its side?
What is the difference between QorbiterQT5 and QorbiterQT4... in terms of requirements? Are there any pre-requisites for QT5 that I should install to prevent the fatal error?

many thanks and sorry for the ignorance.

Is there a video or wiki page I should look at to see how it is *supposed* to work in case I report things that are just user errors?

James.

A normal retailler for the above product...  also carries 9" as well as options..

http://www.geekland.co/7-Android-40-Wall-Mounted-Tablet-with-POE-GK-VIA-E002.htm

That's not bad at all. Wonder what they mean by "external RJ45" with adapter.... seems strange that this would be combined with POE compatible. Surely to be POE compatible it has to have the electronics to split off the power from the signal so one would think that's pretty much integrated. Would be good to know.

I must say, the absolute best for me would be a tablet that "docks" into a wall station like this. So you can slot it in and it charges, has LAN etc directly... and then you can pull it out and wander around with it.

Still, the above would be pretty good for me just as a viewer for my security cameras and could happily mount just above my gate intercom. Running Q or weborbiter would also allow me to use it to control the home...

Thanks, possy... unit price is reasonable but I think we may battle to drum up 997 other users willing to fork out for this  :P

So I tried using "Generic IP Camera" template to create mine but no luck - can't retrieve snapshot. Any suggestions? How do I debug?

I can access the snapshot via:
http://192.168.10.20:81/snapshot.cgi?user=xxxx&password=xxxx

So why can't lmce grab these frames? I've checked that the firewall is open on port 81. Any logs I should look at?

[Edit]
Interestingly, in the log for the device I get this error-

Error while calling method: Cannot call class method: cmd_84
error: No such file or directory - /tmp/ip_camera_img261.png, line: 35

Which, I say, is interesting because there is no /tmp/ip_camera_img261.png.... but there is /tmp/ip_camera_img261.jpg. I wonder why it's looking for a png when there is a jpg? Any thoughts?

Hey, that looks very cool. RJ45 connector with POE makes it a winner. Then you don't have to muck about with power bricks and the like. Very nice.

Wonder about the pricing, though...

Do I need to make a video tutorial about the pipes system?

-Thom
Absolutely.... right after you commit my template changes  for that Rii remote ;D
I believe Bushtech has ordered one and you know how he is about things working otb!

I think my problem was somewhere in the original TV template I created (or possibly the pipe connections I had setup beween MD and TV). Are you using an existing tv template or have you created your own? Do you have any other electronic devices you have set up at the same time? I had also built a set-top box template, if I recall, and I think one or both of these or perhaps the audio/video pipes between them and the MD were incorrect.

My solution was to delete and re-create the USBUIRT and then I also deleted my TV template and created a new one (much simpler and more correct) and thereafter it started working. Sorry I can't be of more help.

This is marked as solved but I am having the exact same issue on a fresh install of 10.04.  I dont quite understand the solution and I was wondering if anyone could give me a hand.
The reason you don't quite understand the solution is because I never quite understood the solution myself! My contention is that it was something to do with all the other device templates I created along the way. I would get the UIRT working first of all (receiving) before mucking with any transmission. Are you trying to transmit or receive when you're getting the errors?

Is anyone watching these? should I keep making them?

It's an apt and honest question.

Yes, and YES.
Excellent video. Darn, if only I'd watched this before I mucked about with sqlCVS the first time.

simple camera device
Thanks, possy, will have another look.... if you get a chance, can you let me know the template ID of that one?

Is yours an IP or analog camera?

Just keeping this thread updated with latest thoughts.... anyone welcome to add / contribute.

zoneminder still running well and I'm pretty chuffed (za-speak for happy) with it. I've tried to set up basic camera viewers for my IP cams for LMCE (not as children of motion wrapper) and have not had much luck getting a signal for some reason... starting to suspect you *have* to have motion-wrapper parent to grab the frames? Not sure... I guess I could probably make them children of motion-wrapper and just turn motion off - the reason I don't want motion is that I don't want them grabbing frames when I'm not viewing them. That is zoneminder's job and I don't need any extra traffic or camera load.

The other reason I haven't pursued this too far is that the concept of grabbing individual frames via the "getframe" command (which is how I understand cameras to work under LMCE) doesn't, if you'll excuse the expression, grab me. It seems like a lot of overhead to generate an image stream... and I imagine a proper image stream would be much better.

So, what I'd like to see at the moment is -

a zoneminder machine watching the cams for motion and nicely integrated with LMCE as follows-
1. Triggering events on motion detection
2. Streaming video to a LMCE streaming video viewer
 2.1 Live camera feeds  AND
 2.2 Review of recorded events

Of course zoneminder has a web interface which allows all of the functionality in 2 via a web browser. But running a web browser (firefox) in LMCE is slow. For me at least. It takes a fair bit of time to fire up. I'd much rather have a dedicated LMCE "screen" that can pop-up as soon as it is requested or triggered and get a live view of my camera very quickly.

So zoneminder has a streaming video server which streams frames via http. It would be really cool to be able to connect some sort of LMCE screen/device wrapper/plugin to that server and view the video feed. Mmmmmm.

I've managed to do this using VLC on another linux box quite easily. You basically set up a text file called "myCAM.asf" (or whatever) with the following line in it:
Code: [Select]
http:/(my ip)/cgi-
bin/zm/nph-zms?mode=jpeg&monitor=1&scale=100&maxfps=10&buffer=1000&user=admin&password=(pw)
Or similar. Your zoneminder setup will tell you the path to the nph-zms streaming server application. Then you just run VLC with this file on the command line and it pops up a VLC client window with the video stream from your monitor. Very nice.

But how do I do the same thing in LMCE? Afaik, LMCE uses xine (not vlc) to play media. I went so far as creating the above file in my videos folder and trying to play it via the videos menu but I get some sort of (there is no media player capable of playing this file) error. Darn. I'm experimenting with command line xine on my other boxes to see if it's just some sort of setting but no luck so far. Any ideas?

I was thinking if I got this going the next step would be to setup a scenario that just fired off the appropriate LMCE commands to play the stream directly.

Is it possible to install VLC on the media director?

I realise this is complete hack and not the tight, smooth integration we want in the end but before I go building a DCE device (or at least reading the wiki on it ;-) I figure I need to have a good understanding of all the components, streaming video etc etc. So hacks for now.

Any thoughts/ contributions welcome.

James

Ok... did some digging through the code and I have a vague idea what you're talking about. I must say there were no obvious ways of making it idiot-proof to me so I think we should, at this point, just say make sure every device in your database has a valid device template associated to it and it's only likely to become a problem if you've either been mucking about in the db yourself *blush* or sqlcvsing without first updating and coming off a common solid base.

Ta, I'll remove the coredump files and soldier on.

Thom, can you carry on and check out my last sqlcvs submit? I added the "Rii" manufacturer but, as mentioned earlier, it may need a PK correction due to my having other devices in my system.
