16  LinuxMCE / Installation issues / Re: HDMI nvidia HDA sound issues ZOTAC ZBOX (id41) - 1004 on: July 30, 2012, 07:40:25 pm
Tompin 2
Does your alsamixer also say s/pdif output? This bothers me as I can see my s/pdif out on the zbox is lit up red i.e transmitting.

Viking
I have had sound a couple of times but a reboot or 2 soon kills the sound. Although I have recently started suspecting that when I have sound it's not 5.1 dolby but the amp converting 2 channel sound to 5 channel stereo.

Still trying to figure out what's potting. When I play dvd from core I get sound from all speakers in 5.1 setup. If I do  speaker-test -D hdmi -c2 I get audio from 2 speakers (L+R). If I try  speaker-test -D hdmi -c7 I get : Playback open error: -16,Device or resource busy.

My old Denon amp (Fed by fiber from TV) is set on auto for input. I am thinking what I'm am actually getting is the equivalent of 5 channel stereo Huh

Alsamixer (V1.0.22) outputting via S/pdif. Is this correct?

Thanks to L3 my sound is working again.!

Some notes to get it working:

Add these 2 lines to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
options snd-hda-intel model=auto
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=0 index=-2
hash one out and do the following:
reboot, and  run sudo aplay -l
Check that your nvidia is at card 0, then test with speakertest
If no sound go back to alsa-base.conf. remove hash from line and hash out the other line.
reboot, and  run sudo aplay -l, recheck and speakertest

You should have sound now. Grin

L3, please correct me if I've got it wrong.

Mine's the same. Sound started working a couple of weeks ago with L3's guidance, but after some reboots no more sound. Currently on mine the soundtest on 0,7 works but no sound when trying to play something on my media drive.Doing a lot of scratching around to try and find how it all fits together. Doing the change in webadmin didn't help but not sure that I have undone all the changes.

Edit: After a reboot of the system the speaker test on 0,7 still works but I have no sound when playing a dvd.

Sound works! Big thumbs up to L3mce!

Did the apt-get install linux-backports-modules-alsa-`uname -r`
reboot
That got me the 4 devices but no audio with the sound test

The thing that got it finally working was inserting the second bit of code:
"options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=0 index=-2"
to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.

After that the speaker test gave audio on hw 0,7 and got sound when I played a dvd on the core

Then did the mods to make it stick as per L3mce's post

Note that I didn't try hw 0,3 ,8,9. So one of them might also work
Also didn't try the first line of code "options snd-hda-intel model=auto"

Thanks for that info Tompin2. I will be watching with great interest as the sound on the ID41 is the issue I need to resolve. Curiously I am still on snap 26029 and I had video on the ID41 after doing libdvdcss & w32codecs. My alsa is still 0.22 & nvidia glx-260. Using UI2.

Hi Tompin2

thanks fior the info.

Please can you just confirm what versions of alsa & Nvidia you are using in the ID41.

Thanks
