Users / Re: Trying to add in a 2nd automount HDD (Hard Drive)
« on: August 26, 2010, 02:57:32 pm »
Thanks Thom,

before i read this i also came to the conclusion that i had to have a partition so i made 1 with fdisk,
then i formatted the drive with the -j option (as discribed in the wiki, maybe needs update if i read your post :) )
and now LinuxMCE recognized the drive.

i made only 1 primary partition of 2TB.
there is only 1 thing that looks strange, if i look at the devicedata of the 2TB drive (in the device tree) it shows:
Capacity: 1012M
Free Disk Space in MBytes: 1858518

so i wonder, do i have 2TB of diskspace to use this way?

the reason for me to use internal disks is that i have a mobo with 10 sata connectors,
i don't have to spent money on a extra nas box, and i don't have to connect 2 powereating machines to a powersocket :)
also i like the idea of 1 core that controles all (in hard and software)

Hi Andrew,

i did as you suggested but without luck,

i put in a brand new 2TB WD green drive, opened a terminal, and typed:
mke2fs -b 4096 -m 1 -j /dev/sdb
this ran through just fine, after this i rebooted and waited appr. 10 min but still LMCE doesn't autodetect the drive.

any suggestions?

is this true?

Hi Developers,

if u look at the snapshots at its a bit confusing:

LinuxMCE-8.10-23194-i386.iso 23-Jul-2010 20:17  3.8G
LinuxMCE-8.10-23200-i386.iso 23-Aug-2010 08:11    2        <-- 23 august and size 2?
LinuxMCE-8.10-23227-i386.iso 02-Aug-2010 12:16  3.8G
LinuxMCE-8.10-23233-i386.iso 10-Aug-2010 12:16  3.8G
LinuxMCE-8.10-23234-i386.iso 19-Aug-2010 12:11    2        <-- size 2?
LinuxMCE-8.10-23236-i386.iso 19-Aug-2010 12:11    2        <-- size 2?
LinuxMCE-8.10-23248-i386.iso 18-Aug-2010 16:17  3.8G
LinuxMCE-8.10-23251-i386.iso 19-Aug-2010 08:16  3.8G
LinuxMCE-8.10-23257-i386.iso 22-Aug-2010 20:15  3.8G

so to get things clear, wich is the latest and why do they differ in size?

Installation issues / Re: No Network, new mobo
« on: August 19, 2010, 05:06:42 pm »
thanks for ur responce,

none of my nic's work, thats the strange part.
still i think i have to install lmce and that lmce will install the right drivers, this would explain why the second pci nic worked.
i am using a snapshot from july.
i have time to try further in a couple of day's, will give feedback.

any suggestions are welkom :)

in kubuntu 10.04 it worked, no problem, but in the 8.10 LinuxMCE Kubuntu desktop (prior to LMCE install) it doesn't.
meanwhile i read somewhere that if u install lmce, the driver gets updated, but this way i cannot update the kubuntu install like the wiki says. would this be a problem?

Hi, welcome to the forums,

Installation issues / No Network, new mobo
« on: August 19, 2010, 11:48:17 am »

got myself a brand new mobo, gigabyte  GA-770TA-UD3 (onboard nic Realtek 8111D), i installed a second nic (wich worked fine with a prior setup of LinuxMCE)
now i can't get any of the 2 to work,
also made a new network from settingsmenu, no luck

i haven't installed LMCE yet, just installed the kubuntu desktop,
if i install LMCE (without the kubuntu update) will the correct driver be installed automatic?

also installed kubuntu 10.04 and then the onboard nic seemed to work ok

i read at that a kernel-update should be performed, must i do so?
are there any risks?

anybody a idea?

Installation issues / Re: Asrock Ion 330 issue
« on: August 10, 2010, 08:30:56 pm »
Ok, thanks or your excelent advice, i was already looking into the user setups on the wiki :)
I wanna get a mobo with lots of sata and pcie connectors on it so it can be expanded if i need to,
Been interested in gigabyte 770 and 870 series as they have a lot of connectivity on them.

Thanks a lot,
I will post a wiki of my setup if i get it up and running

ok thanks all for your help,

would it make sense to get a intel instead of a amd system?
if so wich?

thanks Andrew for your clear explanation.
it helps me a lot.

do u recommend a specific cpu, i was thinking in the lines of:
AMD Athlon II X3 400e, Triple-core 2,2GHz
AMD Athlon II X2 235e, Dual-core 2,7GHz

wich is better, more cores or greater Ghz.

All the best,

Hi Andrew,
the real issue with NC30's, or indeed any Atom based Core's, is the Regen processing overhead - the Atom really is not ideal for this type of processing
could u explain more about the regen processing, what exactly is it and what will i notice in every day use?

since my my mobo broke i am looking how to build a new core/hybrid and 1 of the key features would be energy efficienty, this is where the ion performce really well.
but if i have to wait 5 minutes after i press a key, its not worth it.

i am thinking about using 2 or 4 gb of ram will this change anything for the ion?

Installation issues / UPDATE: NVidia GT220, no AVWizard
« on: August 02, 2010, 10:27:24 am »
hi all,

just wanted to give a update,

sadly my core died, i wanted to swap the gt220 for a ati-card wich i had somewhere laying around,
the ati-card slipped through my fingers and landed on my mainboard and broke it.

the good news is, now i have to get another mainboard  ;)
i will get one without onboard graphics  ;D

i was going to get another mainboard anyway because after roughfly 6 weeks of trying,
dispite all the good suggestions and help from you all,
i wasn't able to get it working (wich was very frustrating),

a big thanks to everyone who posted their suggestions and helped me!
(i learned a lot from it)

i will post my new setup when i get it up and running
if someone has a suggestions for a good AM3 mainboard, please let me know.

Installation issues / updating xorg-server/nvidia drivers
« on: July 23, 2010, 09:31:14 pm »
having much trouble installing my nvidia gt220 with the onboard ati X200 gave me an idea.
i thought others may want to do this for their own purpose so i made a new topic.

is there a way to update the xorg-server and the nvidia-driver to the latest and greatest?

if yes could someone please discribe in detail (i'm fairly new to this  ;))
