If you want this to happen, you should do the following:
* open a trac ticket type feature_request
* look into the code and start coding
* apply your code to the ticket
* grab someone in #linuxmce-devel to give it a test drive
*...
* profit

i am fairly new to all of this (LinuxMCE, opensource community, the trac-system, using this forum intensly, linux) but very much willing to learn.

sadly i do not know how to code, but i want to help in anyway i can.
sorry if did or asked anything wrong, my intentions are good and i certainly do not want to offend somebody in any way.

me asking this feature here is my way of helping, as the handling/managing of tv-shows with this button would be improved,
one could easily use mkv to extract the episodes to single files and select the correct audio and subtitles in the orbiter.

if i have these kind of ideas would it be ok if i posted them in the feature request section?
so someone with code-skill, time and will to do it, can do it? does it work that way?

when playing dvd's (ripped with LMCE) you can select audio and subtitles using the orbiters UI1 "DVD-options" button.
this button doesn't appear when playing mkv-files (same dvd, fully ripped to mkv using makemkv).

so currently there is no way to select audio tracks and subtitles when playing mkv-files.

is there a way to get the "DVD-options" button when playing mkv-files?
should/can i open a new ticket for this?

P.S.
the great thing about makemkv is that u can rip a tv-show-dvd to the separate episodes in 1 go.
for example if there are 4 episodes on the dvd,
it will rip them with no compression and all the subtitles and audio tracks, leaving you 4 episode-files.

Also a Ocelot from Applied Digital with a SECU16IR module would work.

tag each episode with a title of Family Guy, or American Dad.

Use the Episode attribute to tag each episode with a # and a name. The media plugin will use and show this, and eventually, will collapse these to be expanded when clicked on.

Hi Thom,
i did this with my series of Friends (ripped the complete disk at once to .dvd) but the "collapse" part did not happen in any Orbiter.
am i doing something wrong or will this feature be made available in the future?

if it will be available in the future, what is, for now, the best way to store, rip and browse tv-shows?

sorry, for not making this clear but the above was all done manually.

Anyways, point is, that sort of functionality does not currently exist and as such, i keep my libraries in a hierarchy that lends itself to this type of filtering naturally when using 'file' sort mode.

will it be included in the future?
one way could be expanding the numbers of attributes in the Orbiter and maybe look at how music is presented:
artist -> album ->song, thats all you need!

for me now i think i tagg as much ass possible and use filters, its not that hard getting used too.
i think i will rip the whole disk and tag them with episode 1-4 as i discribed or rip episode by episode, if i can find a easy way.
if you have any suggestions, i am happy to hear.

Hi All,

Tagging my DVD collection is not a problem and is great however,

i ripped my 'Series Friends DVD' with LMCE, so i got the .dvd,
now i want to tagg them with episode and title attribute,
so far i ripped 3 dvd's of season 1.
every dvd gets the same title attribute: 'friends season 1'
every dvd gets the episode attribute: 'episode 1-4' or 'episode 5-8' accordingly.

it was my understanding that in the orbiter (UI1) you would see 1 entry 'friends season 1' and if you would select this entry you would see all the different episodes.
this unfortunately does not happen,
i get every dvd listed separately as 'friends season 1 - episode 1-4' and 'friends season 1 - episode 5-8' etc.

what am i doing wrong or is this supposed to work this way?

any suggestion or help in tagging my tv-shows is welcome,

entirely do-able all though i need to examine how thetvdb.com deals with discs. i know they have that as part of the api, just need to look into it.

that would be great, thanks a lot for your effort and contribution to this great system!

Sorry for being so confusing. You can in fact do that (though i didnt program the tv tagger to take that into account so some adjustments would need to be made)

I do not want to give orders, please don't get me wrong, i just want the best and easiest way to rip tv-show dvd's.
If you could make those adjustments, that would be great, as far as i see it there would be a bunch of improvements:
- you can still use the buildin ripper wich is great and fast
- you still have acces to all of the dvd extra's

The tagging of tv-shows has to be done either-way, when u rip into episodes you have to tagg them and if you rip into dvd-iso you also have to tagg them, i personelly think ripping the totall dvd and tagging afterwards is easier.

It is possible to assign episode tags to the .iso. If you rip each episode from the disc to its own .iso,

so it isn't possible to assign 4 episode-tags to a full dvd-iso (dvd rip as 1 disk)?
that way u could use the standard dvd-ripper built in LMCE and do the tagging after that.

for rip-software i am, as you puzzled, i used makemkv and was very happy about it because it can rip 1 dvd in 1 go to the seperate episodes.
sadly if u rip to mkv, audio and subtitle can't be chosen in the orbiter from my experience (i tried a movie-dvd)
or do u know how to get the .mkv files to work?

just got a few new questions reading your responce:

Rip and tag Disc 1 of xx discs. It contains 4 episodes of the series. That .iso now is tagged with the data for those 4 shows, making it confusing to find just the one.

isn't it posible to assign episode tags to the .iso so u can view the episodes names in the orbiter?

could u name a few ripping software, so i can try some out, i want the best possible quality, hdd-space is not a problem.

Managing the series is a work in progress (and 90% complete)

do u mean ticket 778, i read about it in the svn-pages, last comment is about some bugs being there,
i asume they are being worked on? (just a question, please do not be offended by it, just want to point it out and certenly do not want to stress somebody out )

i was hoping somebody had:
- a quick-guide or,
- a pros and cons towards ripping entire dvd or episodes or,
- an example how he or she did manage tv-series from dvd or,
- a personal story about his/her struggles or,
- a suggestion about ripping software

again, i am not only asking this for myself but also for future reference, for people who want to begin using the system, as guidelines.
