I've basically done that already but i did it again to your instructions and it didn't help.  I did notice something strange however while playing around last night.  I didn't create any shares on the core, not deliberately anyways, but last night the core found itself.  I ran through the automated setup found in the wiki, I selected use lmce folder structure, it's displaying the share the way the wiki describes EXCEPT for the folder structure.  When I open a share to the core I see Home, My folder, my wife's folder, and a public folder.  If I drill into any of those 4 folders I'll eventually see a folder that represents the share on the core but once in that folder there is nothing.  I was expecting to see music, video, pictures, etc since i selected use lmce file structure.

Any Thoughts?

how long was the core off for?  What is the wake up pattern of the PC?  I only ask because i have 2 windows 7 and 1 vista laptop plus a windows 7 pc that i acquired before building my lmce core and those computers did the same thing.  They would sporadically wake up so I was never able to pin point a pattern.  I ended up turning off the "allow this device to wake the computer" settings for my usb and lan.  The PC and a laptop was being woken by a USB device, one laptop just kind of fix itself so it was probably a program or a schedule task and the other laptop was being woken by the docking station but it was only when the lan was connected.  It wouldn't wake up on it's own with the cat plugged directly into the laptop.  My main point is make sure it's not the pc itself before you go trouble shooting the core.  This is just a small history, I've always had problems with vista and 7 waking the computer.  I only cared and noticed with the laptops because I'd open my computer bag to find a very hot or dead (battery) computer.  It's to the point where I take my laptop out of my bag every night even if i don't plan on working at home.  I've walked out of the house with so many dead batteries that I have an extra charger in my bag, some businesses i frequently visit and a 12volt charger for the cigarette lighter in each car.

Sorry, I'm a talker.  It sometimes comes out in my writing, I write like I talk.

I wasn't necessarily saying a nas uses allot of cpu.  I was pointing out that there is a demand for cpu time when transferring files.  The 20% cpu usage you'll use to stream to 4 mds could be used for something else "core" related.  Example, if I'm coping files to or from my laptop i wouldn't want that to slow down a md's pxe boot or vise verse.

Honestly, as I said I have no patience for slow computing.  You may like my core and i'm sure the general public may also, as a techie it sucks!  I'm only serving 4 md's and I feel this way.  I personally don't think x4 2.x cores is enough for tv, dvr, video, music, pictures, pxe booting, dhcp, x10 control, voip, security cameras, the different ways you can combine scenarios, plus around 11-15 mds.  That's going to be my setup once I move since i already know how big my house will be and my wife and I have to plans to compromise.  That's enough network traffic to justify a gig network with a fiber up-link to the nas.  That would require at least a mid size business server to drive everything with out problems and quickly, that's why I'm shooting for 8 cores.  Since you're planning 30 x10's, a watercooled 4u chassis, a full rack!!, and you're talking about iscsi, esx and building the "ultimate core" i figured you're a geek like me and would want something powerful.

Correct me if I’m wrong but that hp maxes at 8 or 12 gigs, and dual 3.0 xeons.  I know I’m not to far off, there are other factors but it'll handle those vm's depending on what they’re doing but the performance would be less than great.  If they’re DC or anything else with lower IO and memory requirements you’ll be fine.  IDK if you have it setup or not but pm me if you want help with it.  I suggest using Linux as the host os.  I’m running Ubuntu server with vmware server 2.  It uses 700mb at full load and barely any CPU time, Winblows would probably cache 2 gigs off the rip just because.

Sorry, I don’t do racks.  I’m pretty crafty and I feel that I can always just build a suitable rack.  When I order them for the business I always get extra parts and they’re always dells… one apc... dells are better.  I might buy one for the new house but idk.  There’s a room in the blue prints slated as the “Data center” with a raised floor, ac, fire suppression and fire proof walls and ceiling, if I’m going to do all of that I might as well buy a rack and make it all look good.

Okay, my area had a partail power outage for over 14hours two days ago!!  It's sad how much i'm dependant on technology!  I just got around to playing with this again today.  My core is not creating folders on my shares.  I removed my nas from the domian, I even deleted the share and partition from my Nas and recreated it with a different name.  I created a x64 windows server 2008 enterprise vm and I created a share just for testing, I tried it both on and off the domain.  Brand new share, brand new server(not the windows server i tried before), lmce detected the server, then the share, but it didn't create the folder structure and it isn't using it.

Please help me!! Sad What could I be missing?
185  LinuxMCE / Users / Re: **Need Input** Newbie building [Hard]core server on: May 06, 2010, 08:10:37 pm
micklen I don't know if this is to late but I'm using an athlon 5000 at 2.6ghz and i'm not overly happy with performance.  Currently I'm only doing media on 4 mds and it's not as great as I'd like.  You'll have one whole core and .3 ghz more than me but i was thinking of something in the quad core department for my next core build.  Well... as long as I'm not forced to build out a new core before my wife and I start shopping for our next house (1-2 years) i will be shooting for a dual quad core setup in the 3.0ghz department.  I plan on doing the x10 through out, cameras, alarm, and a md in every room so I want something beefy.  My core now is okay for a general end user, someone with a small amount of mds not looking to get to fancy.   I don't know if this is normal but adding a md is like a major system change that usually requires me to restart the core and A quick reload isn't always quick.  Boot time for the mds and core is also pretty long, about 5 mins for the core.  You sound like a geek like me, you may want something beefier like me.

Also if I were you i wouldn't put my core and nas on the same server, lmce, windows, or whatever that is never a good idea.  The core is a server and you usually don't want your server doing a hundred different things when it doesn't have to.  When I first setup my core I had a weak moment and the thought crossed my mind.  That was before i did my first file transfer while watching a movie.  The video was playing from the hd in the core then i started copying a different movie to the core to watch next.  The one i was watching started skipping the second i started the transfer and this was at lan speeds on a full gig network.  I've used freenas and it's not my number one choice but it's better than dumping files directly on the core.  You have a full rack, get a 4 or 5 U case and start your nas with that.  Eventually you'll run out of space but with a dedicated 4U nas you can add more drives and raid controllers as needed.  This would apply to your backups also, I would look for a solution that would backup lmce remotely.  I like to think bigger.  Why backup just lmce when you can backup everything on your network, do you really want your core backing up every computer on your network? I don't think so .

Don’t virtualize anything!! I’m all for virtualization, I have a dedicated vmware server on my network but I wouldn’t use it here.  Your Nas is going to use a decent amount of cpu time, it will create a lot of IO and network traffic.  I have not gotten around to checking yet but I’d be shocked if the core didn’t use a decent amount of ram and I’m sure it’s generating a fair share of IO and network traffic.  Your 3 cores won’t be enough to power the core, nas and what ever else you have on there… well not to my standards anyway, if you’re cool with it run with it.  I hate waiting on computers; I feel that we’re too far along for that.  Now I don’t know you, if you have the resources to drop $5k-$10K on a server that can handle virtualizing a nas device do it, we all need to do our part in protecting the environment. I personally don’t care much about the electric bill (my network is more important) and I help the environment in other ways so I have dedicated servers.  On that note I have 6 physical servers running 24/7 plus at any given time there is usually a light on some where in my house (my wife and I suck at conserving power) and the electric bill is only around $150-175 per month.  I don’t think that’s a bad price at all especially since all power saving and efficiency settings on the servers are turned off.

That’s my 2 cents; I wish some one told me what I just told you before I bought my core.  It was between the one I have and a quad core but I read the wiki which said a p4 or something and I figured the AMD 5000 would be enough.  I really think the requirements in the wiki needs to be adjusted.  I don't understand how you can run this thing on a p3!!

I'm sorry Thom but you don't seem like a happy person, I think you need a hug, you should start working on that.  This is the second time you've attacked me for no apparent reason.  I guess we can cyber fight if you want but I'm kind of a busy guy, I can think of a million other things I'd rather do with my time.

Back to the nas, I just looked through the post about the samba fix and it doesn't apply to me.  My nas has an empty share that I created just for lmce, I have shares with data on it and I have an ubuntu and windows 2008 file server (waiting to be decommissioned), Lmce sees all of my shares and appears to be logging in successfully but doesn't do anything with the shares.  I've tried with both static and dhcp addresses for the nas, and both private and public shares.  The only thing I didn't try was removing my nas from the domain.  It's not always easy joining Openfiler to my domain so I'm saving that one for last. I'm thinking even though it's a linux box being joined to the domain is maybe blocking something.  My Kubuntu laptop and macbook connects to all my shares ratter easily so i doubt this is the problem but any input on this would be appreciated.

Don't get confused I only want to use my Nas (Openfiler) and I only want to use the one share I created. Just for testing I tried to connect to all my file shares in hopes that one would work.  I'm desperate here, I need some direction.
187  LinuxMCE / Users / connecting to a Nas on: May 03, 2010, 04:43:11 pm
I'm having the hardest time connecting Lmce to my nas.  I'm using Openfiler, It's been up and running long before lmce was introduced to the network so I'm thinking the problem is with lmce and not my nas.  Lmce detected my nas and allowed me to set it up.  I have full access to everything on the nas so i created an account with read only access to most and write access where i want it.  I entered the credentials into lmce when it found my nas and i selected use lmce default file structure... which ever is the recommended setting but i still can't see my nas.  My nas has public full access for everyone shares and restricted shares to specific users, I can't get to any of them.  On a side note, during one of my attempts to get it working I deleted my nas from lmce, waited for lmce to detect it again, this time i didn't set it up with a user name or password (i was shooting for the public shares).  A couple hours later the MD in my kitchen failed and was displaying a samba error message that i can't remember, at the same time all the other mds froze up.  I restarted the core and it failed with the same errors as the kitchen MD.  I was able to get far enough into booting for web admin to work and my google search revealed it was a samba authentication error. Using web admin I added a user name and password for my nas and it's shares, rebooted the core and it booted fine, I haven't seen this error since.  That tells me the Lmce sees the nas, and it's authenticating, but it's just not doing anything with the nas.  Can someone point me in the right direction here?

Thanks in advance!!
188  LinuxMCE / Users / Re: DHCP configurations on: April 30, 2010, 01:49:18 pm
Okay so i changed my core to a static IP but that undid the change i made through shh.  It defaulted back to assigning the core as the dns server.  I even configured the core to use my dns server when i went static.  It looks like the core itself tries to resolve names when the request is coming from an internal computer but the core itself uses my dns server when it needs a name resolved for it's own use.  I used putty to ssh to the core to get these results.

So I left the core static since i was going to do that anyway, re-modified the dhcpd.conf file and the command to restart dhcp worked with out a glitch.   I didn't test my wife's files but I got a new computer last night and i was able to join it to the domain this morning.  That wouldn't happen with bad/incorrect name servers.

Thanks guys!! Now I'm back to lmce and getting my TV tuner to work.

Ya i ran that script fine, i would never of got this far otherwise...do you know if its ok to just run the script again ?

hmm...  i don't know dude.  I don't see why it would break things if you ran the script again but i don't know for sure.  When you run scripts like that doesn't linux just skip over parts that are already done?  That's my understanding of how it works, please tell me if I'm wrong.
190  LinuxMCE / Users / Re: How Long for initial PXE boot on: April 29, 2010, 09:56:51 pm
I'm all out but allow me to take a swing in the dark for a moment.  Are you certain the script ran correctly ('/usr/pluto/bin/Diskless_CreateTBZ.sh')?  I don't recall if sudo is required or not but i would imagine it would be.  I usually just throw sudo in front of commands like that as a general practice.  It maybe wrong but i still very much suck at linux... I'm tryin though.  Maybe the script errored out some where and you didn't notice, that would mean you have an incomplete image.  some of those commands fly past the screen.  Good Luck.
191  LinuxMCE / Users / Re: DHCP configurations on: April 29, 2010, 09:46:23 pm
okay... I thought that was for the core only, the external interface.  The core passes those configurations on to the internal interface?  That's how i expected it to work but i guess i have to use static to achieve that.  I'm trying it now.  unfortunately i just accidentally gave the core the same ip address as it's gateway so I'm locked out.  I'll check it out in an hour when i get home.

Thanks Thom!!
192  LinuxMCE / Users / Re: DHCP configurations on: April 29, 2010, 08:08:46 pm
I checked web admin, in that very same spot.  I don't have a choice to modify these setting there.  was this changed in an update or something?  I can see the dns servers that my router assigned to the core but it doesn't show what's being assigned to my devices behind the core nor does it give me the option to make my own selection.
193  LinuxMCE / Users / Re: DHCP configurations on: April 29, 2010, 05:52:52 pm
Thanks, That worked for me.  I don't know how this will affect lmce, that i'll find out with time.  To reduce the chances of error I listed my core's ip as a forwarder.  If my dns server can't resolve the name the core will try and if the core can't it'll send the request off to where ever the core sends recursions.  In theaory if the core's dns server is doing something special, it should be able to continue doing it.

I needed this because my wife has an excel file with links to other files on the network.  She used full dns names to create the links so the file started failing ever since i put the core in place.  If any one runs into a similar problem all i did was:

ssh to the core
login and type, nano /etc/dhcp3/dhcpd.conf
I replaced the ip address on this line with the ip of my server: option domain-name-servers 192.168.200.1;
save the file, restart the core.  I couldn't get the only command i know to restart dhcp in linux to work so i restarted the core.

Thanks pw44! She wont beat me now that her file works  Grin
194  LinuxMCE / Users / Re: How Long for initial PXE boot on: April 28, 2010, 07:44:41 pm

Make sure you have the diskless MD Image...or what ever it's called installed.  I'll try and find the link for you but it's in the wiki.

Is this what I need?:
Code:
Run '/usr/pluto/bin/Diskless_CreateTBZ.sh' on the core to created the MD image.

sorry, i was derailed.  Yes, if you're using 0810 and you installed it from the dvd then that is what you need.  I couldn't pxe boot my md's until i ran that.  It took a good while to complete.  I have no clue how long as i was way to impatient to sit around and wait for it, but i waited for while before i left the room.

If i were you and this is a dvd install of 0810, I'd delete the md you manually added, then run this script, then try to pxe boot the md.
195  LinuxMCE / Users / Re: How Long for initial PXE boot on: April 28, 2010, 06:50:26 pm
http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/PXE

I tried to just enable PXE boot but got nothing thats when I started looking at posts and the wiki

Which Version are you using?  If you're using 0810 there's your problem...
"This step is not needed since version 7.04" and "This step is not needed since version 7.04 "

Make sure you have the diskless MD Image...or what ever it's called installed.  I'll try and find the link for you but it's in the wiki.  When you say "but get nothing" what does that mean? your computer tries to pxe but boots windows instead or starts booting lmce and fails??
