31  LinuxMCE / Users / Re: OMG, why do you make this so difficult? on: August 21, 2011, 02:27:23 am
There are some really wonderful things in LinuxMCE that I would love to use, but can’t even get the installation/AVwizard to complete consistently without errors.  I have wasted untold number of hours doing repeated installations following severely out of date Wiki instructions.

I'm a complete beginner. What are you trying to install on? Are you using supported equipment? I did my test installation on an old scrap PC that I had laying around. It got through the installation but I didn't have any hardware to do anything interesting with it. Next I bought a bare-bones system from a reputable supporter of LMCE (http://lmcecompatible.com/) and everything that they provided me with works perfectly. The only thing that doesn't work is the linux unsupported tuner card that I bought on my own (for a "good" price), even though many suggested a different model. Even with that bad purchase decision I still had many people put a lot of their time trying to support me. When I mentioned that the Wiki wasn't up to date, they suggested that I update it. I stated doing that and now I'm actually beginning to help the project (albeit in my very limited way) rather than just be a person that demands time and attention from those who are very tired of answering the same questions over and over again. I feel your pain but I think that your energies would be better used helping correct the issues with the Wiki rather than just complain about it in the forums.

Well done Thom. Will there be replays available?
33  LinuxMCE / Users / Re: ZWave device not turning on/off reliably on: August 29, 2010, 06:06:37 pm
I've had a problem where at least one of my Z-wave devices fails to turn on. Which device that fails seems to change whenever I reload the devices. I have nine z-wave devices (switches, outlets, lamp modules and an outdoor module). They are mainly controlled by LMCE using a Aeon USB stick but I also have an external remote to override thins.

I verified that everything on my network is plugged in. There aren't any large distances between the devices that work or don't work. The instructions that came with my Intermatic devices wasn't the best so I could easily be doing something wrong. Are there any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this issue? I have another ten modules that I will be installing but I just have not gotten around to.

Has anybody been able to get this Foxconn Nettop - 0331i to do a PXE boot.

Any luck? I see that newegg has this unit for $159 shipped after coupon (EMCYTZY32). I've been looking for a small unit and it this works and does not have heat problems, it might be my pick.
35  LinuxMCE / Developers / Re: Work in Progress: Pandora Player on: June 06, 2010, 05:08:46 pm
Thom,

Thank you very much for working on this. (any all of the other things you are working on)

How will it log you onto Pandora? Do we sign in using the browser and once the cookie is set all is good?

I highly recommend that you consider buying a core from some place like http://lmcecompatible.com/. I bought a barebones core from them and it was the best decision I made.

Which core did you buy? I can only see media directors on the site quoted, and no cores as all. The PC that I use now i double checked all the components would work looking on the http://www.linuxquestions.org/hcl/ and asking in the forums once I had chosen everything I wanted. If it should come to building it I can do the same again.

The owner (tkmedia) frequents the forums and the IRC. I sent him an e-mail letting him know what I wanted to do and listed the components that I already had. The next day I had a quote and a week or two later I was installing LMCE.

I would skip the blu ray for now. It may be a VERY long time until it is supported in Linux.
37  LinuxMCE / Feature requests & roadmap / Meego (was: Attitude of COOPERATION.) on: June 04, 2010, 02:25:02 pm
I am doing research to move the stack to MeeGo.

Is it the consensus of LMCE developers that MeeGo will be the open source OS of choice for portable devices in the future? It looks very promising to me but I'm not qualified to make that judgment. I installed 1.0 it on my netbook and it looked ok.

Welcome to LMCE. I'm a newbie too but I'm hoping that my experiences can help you make some of the right decisions.

You'll need to do more research than you have done so far. Many of the questions that you asked are already answered multiple times in these forums and on the Wiki. I'm not hating, I'm just trying to give you a friendly warning that some/many of the bigger LMCE supporters get frustrated when people ask questions that they have answered many, many times. Trust me, I made and continue to make the mistake of asking questions that I could have or can answer on my own.

Again, I'm a newbie so don't take anything that I say as gospel but hopefully it will be a starting point. Here are some of the things that I see which may be problems:
Blu Ray - There is no reason to have a blu ray on the core and blu ray doesn't play nice with Linux
Orbiter - What are you planning on using as an orbiter?
Laptops - How do you plan on using the windows laptops? I don't believe that PXE works with wireless (well or at all)
HDTV Tuner - I'm not familiar with UK TV. Are you planning on OTA or over cable? If cable is the signal unencrypted?

If you are like me then you will want to try to get every piece at the lowest possible cost. Unfortunately the money spent on the equipment was the least significant cost in me getting my LMCE box running (I'm still trying to get all the features working). The time spent on getting non-compatible (or not commonly used) pieces working has been the most significant cost. I highly recommend that you consider buying a core from some place like http://lmcecompatible.com/. I bought a barebones core from them and it was the best decision I made. I seem to have had troubles with the pieces that I found "good deals" on and bought elsewhere.

I hope that this helps a bit.
39  LinuxMCE / Installation issues / Re: newbie wireless help on: June 03, 2010, 02:16:22 pm
should just buy a wireless router and use it as bridge to the core?

I have an Asus wireless router that I use only as a wireless access point (WAP). Most of the features are turned off (such as DHCP) but WPA-2 was left on. There was actually a setting on the router to use it only as a WAP.
40  LinuxMCE / Users / Re: ZOTAC ZBOX HD-ID11-U on: May 30, 2010, 07:54:07 pm
The Zotac ZBOX HD-ID11-U is working great !!!

How is the machine doing with heat? I'd be getting the Zotac box to replace a Dell Zino that slows down the processor when it gets too hot which causes a unwatchable choppy picture.

Am I correct in assuming that you are netbooting LMCE? If so, did you need to do anythign to get the NIC drivers to work?

Thank you!
41  LinuxMCE / Feature requests & roadmap / Re: Kylo Browser on: May 05, 2010, 03:51:31 pm
Kylo reached out to me to ask if I would help beta test a linux version. It is billed as a browser for the big screen. I'm still new to LMCE but wouldn't there be some advantages in integrating this browser?
42  LinuxMCE / Users / Re: Why many CATx cables? on: April 26, 2010, 02:01:23 pm
Am I current in my understanding that CatX has eight leads of which only four are used? Would it be possible to run two pairs of signals down one cable or would there be interference problems?

43  LinuxMCE / Users / Re: BlackBerry as Orbiter? on: April 12, 2010, 04:28:10 pm
I had that same thing but I managed to get the same dialogue box to show up on the KDE desktop. I typed in the same code on the phone and in the dialogue box the two paired and then the orbiter loaded

That helped. I opened up KDE desktop, entered a code on the BlackBerry. Then KDE poppedup with a window and I entered that code. I saw a small symbian screen and it worked. I tried to uped the resolution in the orbiter setting to 320x240 (since I didn't see a match for my 480x360 screen) I chose PDA 4x3, regened and then I got the screen. However, LMCE doesn't like touchpads so it immediately clicked on a option as soon as I tried to move. I have to do some work until at least tonight so I won't be able to play with it any further until then. What orbiter settings have you tried and which have you fond worked best? Have you had any problems getting the JavaMO to exit? Mine seems to be locking but after a quick reset on the BlackBerry I'm back to "normal".

44  LinuxMCE / Users / Re: BlackBerry as Orbiter? on: April 11, 2010, 10:37:12 pm
The files are here http://hob.dyndns.org/javamo/ and use the blackberry desktop manager or download directly to your BB

Thank you. I D/Led and installed JavaMO on my bold 9700. Installed the bluetooth adapter and the Core saw my blackberry, asked me the user/room and asked which type of device it was. I selected "Java Mobile Phone". Since I had already installed JavaMo I selected No when the core asked me if I wanted to try resending it to the phone since it failed the first try. I had JavaMO running and then my BlackBerry asked me for the passkey for dcerouter-0. I didn't enter anything and waited patiently. Eventually the BB said pairing failed and that's as far as I got. I didn't try manually pairing the device and the dcerouter is not listed in my Bluetooth devices on the BB. I rebooted the core and now whenever the BB is in range of the core it keeps popping up asking me for the passkey. I do not have the BB in listen mode but it is discoverable. It keeps asking me for the passkey until I walk far enough away or until I make the BB non discoverable. Then it will only keep the non discoverable setting until I try JavaMO again.
45  LinuxMCE / Users / Re: BlackBerry as Orbiter? on: April 09, 2010, 02:01:29 pm
I didn't do anything special other than transferring the JavaMO files to the blackberry via a USB cable instead of internet download.

I'm sorry for the simple question, but how did you transfer the JavaMO files? Where did you get the files from them?

You also mentioned that the keymap is a bit off. Is that something that I could easily adjust?
