Update...unmet dependencies for nvidia-glx. According to what is echoed on the screen during the install, the current driver is nothing, the preferred driver is 195.36.15, and it does an apt-get install but it ends up missing the nvidia kernel source, libvdpau, and nvidia settings and Python-software-properties is missing a dependency as well but I didn't get what it was. All these are on the core it just doesn't use them since it has Intel graphics. I can edit the /usr/pluto/diskless/83/usr/pluto/bin/nvidia-install.sh script to read the following:

# Install the driver if needed
   if [[ "$current_driver" != "$preferred_driver" ]]; then
      echo "installing NEW driver $preferred_driver!"
Log "$LogFile" "installing NEW driver $preferred_driver!"
      INSTALLED="0" (changed to "0" from "1")
      # apt-get install -y $preferred_driver (commented out this line so it wouldn't try to install)
   else

By changing the INSTALLED to "0", it didn't go into the reboot and since it didn't try to install the drivers, it didn't need to. At least this way, I have the media director up and running but it's not the right way.
Is this a repository issue? Is there a better way for me to resolve this?

Thanks,

M.

Thanks for the info Thom...I get that the cost and flexibility is better with VOIP and I would go that route if I could. Unfortunately, my internet (mobile broadband only) can be less than reliable and clogs up very easily.  And to get it as good as it is, I have an external YAGI antenna pointed at the cell tower because I am on the fringe of service.  I guess that's the price I pay for being far enough out of town to have a little bit of land so I can have horses in my back yard.  I have found pages on the wiki on how to set up a SPA3102 and even tie it in to a legacy analogue phone line.  I just hoped that it could be done with a simple data/fax/modem just to pull down the caller ID.

Thanks,

M.

I don't use VOIP. I would like to use LMCE to see CallerID on the screen and to possibly replace my answering machine.  Can I interface my analog phone line with LMCE through a data/fax/voice modem?  I have read on the wiki and it looks like LMCE can interface with analog phone lines both inside and outside the house. But all it talks about is using outboard equipment like Linksys SPA3102. Is it possible to do it with a data/fax/voice modem or does it have to be a specialized interface. I'm not looking to actually make phone calls with this.

Thanks,

M.

Users / Question about install scripts and snapshots...
« on: January 19, 2011, 04:02:29 pm »
All,
Is install script that is referenced in the internet install instrucitions for 810 the same version that is in the latest DVD snapshot? Also, if I apt-get update and/or upgrade, does it download the latest install script or do I need to get it from here - http://svn.linuxmce.org

I know that could always edit it myself if it is a small change.  I'm slowly learning my around the svn.

:)

Thanks,

M.

Snapshot 23614 - Core running well--core has integrated Intel GPU.  I successfully netbooted a laptop that did not have an nVidia GPU.  I built my MD with an Intel core 2 duo, 4 GB ram, nVidia Geforce 9400GT.  It boots until it tries to install the nVidia driver then it says that it has missing dependencies for 195 and reboots.  It reboots and starts the process all over.  The screen goes by quicker than I can see what it is really saying.  I dropped a 20 GB HD in the MD and installed Kubuntu 8.10 and I can successfully install the 195 drivers.  This also lets me know the the computer functions correctly. All I have found in the forum so far refers to this -- http://svn.linuxmce.org/trac.cgi/changeset/23588.  I checked and my install script seems to be okay.  This MD is the only computer I have with an nVidia GPU.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
M.

Check if your dhcp is running in webadmin.

I'll rephrase since what I wrote didn't seem to say what I meant.  When I netbooted my wife's laptop to the core, it worked fine.  I had to start the DHCP in the webadmin plus my network cards were listed backwards so I had to switch them (in the webadmin).  Once I did that, everything worked.  But when I shut down the laptop and booted up in winblows, it said that the files had changed and it had to repair them.  Fortunately for my own health and marital status, Vista was able to repair the install and the laptop works fine now. I won't be trying that again with my wife's laptop. (whew)

I reinstalled LMCE snapshot 23614 onto my Core and it seemed to work fine this time.  I don't know what the original issue was except for just some kind of glitch during installation.

I used my wife's MS Vista laptop to test and it broke it.  When I rebooted into Windblows, it went into repair mode and had to take it back to a previous restore point.  I don't think I will do that again.  :-)

Thanks,

M.

Installation issues / Re: Diskless Setup failed
« on: January 17, 2011, 01:59:51 pm »
I switched places with my Core and MD.  In other words, I did a clean install on what was going to be my MD.  Everything installed fine up until the reboot after running the install script from the desktop.  It says "Failed to Startup X" when I tried to reboot.  I am searching the forums and wiki now to try to fix it.
I will post with how it goes.

Thanks,
M.

Well that's about the right kind of time. Do you have any other MDs you can try, laptop for example?

I tried it on my wife's laptop and it did the same thing.  It did have a different IP address and MD number so that part seems to be fine.

hmmmm...maybe. I can try my wifes laptop, as long as it doesn't break it.  :-)
I will try and let you know.

Somewhere between an hour to two hours.  I have a slow internet connection.

Hello All, I have a core and a media director. The installation of LMCE for the core seemed fine. I ran the "Diskless" install script and that seemed to go well.  My MD is my old MythTV box. It tries to netboot for the MD but the screen says "Diskless Setup failed" just a few seconds after it says "Running Diskless_Setup.sh". I found a few things on the wiki and in the forum but none of them seem to work.  What I have tried detailed here (http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=8425.msg61787#msg61787) and here (http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Diskless_setup_failed_error_in_0810_beta). Everything seems to be in order according to what I read but it doesn't work. I don't know what information I need to post (logs or whatever) to ask for help. If you tell me what I need to post, I will do my best.

Thanks,
M.

Users / Dual NIC issue...
« on: January 16, 2011, 01:35:11 pm »
Good Morning All, Backgroud -- I downloaded and am installing snapshot LinuxMCE-8.10-23614-i386.iso 13-Jan-2011 16:16  3.5G. I have two NICs, one built in (primary) and one on a PCI expansion slot (secondary).  I read in the wiki that you need the primary connected to the internet for the install. Or, just to be safe, connect both. I connected both.  The install into Kubuntu went fine.  The update and dist-upgrade went okay but seemed slow. When I ran the LMCE installer script on the desktop, things really got bound up.  I also noticed that I was having trouble connecting to the internet. All the other machines on the network could connect fine so it wasn't my home network. I disconnected the secondary nic and the installation went fine.  I am at the point of the installation after the av wizard but before the set-up wizard (screen is black with big white letters telling me that it is installing stuff like Pluto Text to Speech, etc).  It seems that all the activity on the NICs is now on the secondary.  I plugged the secondary back in because when I rebooted after running the install script, it got hung up on looking for an IP address on the secondary. Once I plugged it back in, it went on its merry way. According to what I understand, after the installation is complete, the primary nic runs the LMCE network (media directors, NAS, DHCP, and all that) and the secondary nic is for internet connectivity.
So this is my question.  Having the primary NIC connected to the internet during the initial install (ie, running the install script on the Kubuntu desktop) and the secondary NIC connected after that would be a normal indication?
Thanks,

M

Users / Re: HDHomeRun-Dual vs. WinTV-HVR-2250 vs. HD-5500
« on: January 13, 2011, 09:21:17 pm »
In addition to abysmal IO performance, keep in mind that your LMCE core officially needs two NICs.  From the wiki:

The Core should have 2 NICs (network interface cards) -- one for connecting to an "external" network (such as your cable modem, DSL modem, or home LAN router) and one for connecting to the "internal" home automation/multimedia network (your LinuxMCE system network).

With the broadband card in the machine, that is technically the second NIC.  The wired NIC on the laptop would feed the home network and act as the DHCP router.  The broadband card would be the connection to the outside world.  Of course this is all theory as I haven't actually tried it yet.

With your wireless broadband can it be run through a USB? (Not sure what you run in the US)

Over here I have a 3G USB modem which I plug directly into a Billion Wireless 4 port GB Router. That in turn is connected directly into the external network for the core.

Also as an alternative to freeNAS have a quick look at unRAID. I find it is very good for media storage although I have read (never tried it) that mythTV doesn't like recording to rieserFS. I'm getting a HDHomeRun and planning on recording TV directly to the core as I don't keep my recordings.

Josh

My broadband card that I currently have is PCMCIA only. Although, when you put it in, all of a sudden you have more usb hubs than before. so I think that it technically is a PCMCIA card the uses an internal usb bus to connect to the modem.

Thanks,

M.
