LinuxMCE / Users / Re: switched from computer screen to my plasma & no video

Following both this thread and the wiki instructions on the AV Wizard.
I am having a hard time with a MD that uses an add on graphics card but has onboard graphics. Onboard is VGA only. Add on card is DVI and S-video, the S-video is what I need and why I am in this situation with two cards.
On first boot the MD skipped AV Wizard, xorg.conf has never existed so I can not follow the wiki guide to change the pci-id I want to use. I am now at the delete and reconnect MD stage because I am lost on how to create a xorg.conf when nothing exists.
If the motherboard does not allow me to jumper out onboard graphics, how should I have my cables configured on first boot?

/usr/pluto/bin/RebootWithAVWizard.sh
Orbiter/Advanced/AV Setup Wizard
hold shift after the machine beeps during boot, this is a touch tricky as you need to press it before the second set of beeps.
In web-admin, enter RECONFIGURE_DEVICE "**RUN_CONFIG**" under status. I believe this will force a redetect at start up and notice the display change.
Alternatively I have been able with Nvidia cards to set up twinview displays and set up an LCD as a second (mirrored) display on DVI-2. With this setting the MD was outputing video to two locations constantly and I just switched inputs to bring up the image. Once configured I could unplug either display and continue to view it on the other.

LinuxMCE / Installation issues / Re: AV Receiver repeatedly detected (Yamaha RX-V1700)

I had a similar issue with null cable connection to my TV. The recommendation I heard was to go to web-admin/media director/ and check "don't detect serial ports", or try with a USB to Serial cable.
On my most recent install the issue resolved after I fully set it up in web-admin, after it was detected. In total there were about 4 places you need to assign the ttyS port. It should show up in AV Equipment and Generic Serial Devices (at least) and both locations might not have the port defined?

LinuxMCE / Installation issues / Re: Multiple sound cards, selected at random?

For any audiophiles following this thread:
S/PDIF optical vs coax? It is my understanding that there is no difference with short cable runs. That and when using a jumper, there is no need to run the VCC line.
Digital vs. stereo? Using a single 3.5mm jack is it possible to send a 5.1/7.1/10.2 signal? Typically when I hear "stereo" I think analog left/right. Multi-channel audio uses L/R, SL/SR, and C/Sw which again supports thinking that jack can only send analog 2 channel?
Techie/Audiophile question: If my assumptions about these signals is incorrect, how does S/PDIF Coax carry a raw digital signal over just 2 wires?
For my next MD area I am looking to really focus on audio reproduction, so am hoping to learn some and get some recommendations. Outside of the SB fatality series I wouldn't know where to begin looking.

I made some time today to test out the multiple sound card settings during general cleaning and organizing (didn't make it to either of those).
Prior to doing any changes today I did a lot of reading so I could get familiar with the terminology. Mutliple channel audio I understand now as my receiver has inputs for that called conveniently "multi channel."
Here was the tested hardware and various configuration settings I attempted:
Intel HD (AC988?) onboard audio, 7.1+2 support - the +2 was not tested as that requires using the front panel header and somehow creates a separate zone of output. Having read that in the mobo manual however I am curious about the possible necessity to create a virtual soundcard when this chipset is present? PCI Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 x2 S/PDIF 3-pin mobo header connected to a SY-AUDI001 s/pdif extension plate (found the pinouts online which with my mobo supply the 5V needed for TOSLINK and COAX digital)
No sound whatsoever in AV WIZARD
intel analog (with 3.5mm jack in all onboard ports one at a time) intel digital coax intel digital optical hdmi
live analog (again testing each 3.5 port, I have the soundblaster pinout to connect the s/pdif but did not connect it) live coax live optical live hdmi
live1 analog live1 coax live1 optical
The only configuration that made any noise whatsoever during AVWizard was when using the s/pdif setting of the intel card I heard the sub 'thud' every 10 seconds or so. This came through during boot even so I doubt it had to do with ALSA or AVWizard attempting to play audio. Perhaps during either a modprobe or my mobo checking for a connection signal a few bits are sent via s/pdif?
Just to rule out additional failure points in my signal I did connect various other devices to my receivers inputs and they played fine. IE, after I failed to get audio via S/PDIF optical from LMCE on optical1 of my receiver I hooked my PS3 up to optical1 and it played fine.

We would like to use cisco phones and not throw them away.
If the urge to throw away 7970s becomes too much to bare, I can provide you my shipping address. Aged and restricted as they may be, its a must have lmce device for me - just like my webDT.

LinuxMCE / Users / Re: Funding Drive: ZWave Door Locks

I like a good crime movie, even more so when tech is being used.
In my own home however I don't see heists taking place where someone finds a non-encrypted z-wave lock and walks right in. My intention on using z-wave locks is for access control more than security. Such as following a doorbell event or an intercom session I could "buzz" guests in under a "at home secure" setting.
While this could be done with a GC-100's relays, a solenoid (or electromagnet) and a power source I had hopes of using z-wave for its simplicity and reliability.
Is the encryption portion necessary for operation or for secure operation?
-thank you again Hari, for your contributions that have made my z-wave experiences pleasant I would contribute any time. I actually wish I could see a video of a 100+ device home to help build interest among my roommates to slowly replace receptacles/switches with z-wave equipment.

The primer is drying now on my new AV/server rack. Until that is finished I really can't tear down more equipment to re-add cards until I am putting things back in their ultimate home. Sparing you the details here, I have dedecated miscellaneous LMCE time ahead of that MD necessary to keep the household happy. Within the week for sure!

No problem.
The log I sent was of this action. On the MD with the 3101 and the UIRT:
Follow DCERouter begins Navigate menus using gamepad Begin playing game Press what is normally mapped to mess C button. onscreen menu comes up. Press it again and menu goes away, repeat several times. Press power off on GYR3101 Disconnect gamepad Copy log to .txt file

Doing some settings backups now. Hopefully I can catch you in IRC as I am not too familiar with tail commands it looks like I am going to need to use.
Backup > delete current gamepad from device tree > reconnect gamepad > execute the patch from above via ssh > hop on IRC to make sure I am tailing correctly.

LinuxMCE / Installation issues / DB-9 to RS-232 assistance (process initialize)
|
on: February 27, 2013, 10:20:23 pm

Control: MD Serial port 0 Sharp LCD TV - RS-232 port
Audio: out - MD HD Intel 3.5mm in - Sharp LCD TV - 3.5mm (paired with video signal from HDMI 6) out - Sharp LCD TV - Red & White phono jacks in - Sony STR-K850 Receiver
My TV responds to PWR1 commands and all other commands such as change input, volume etc. Occassionally however although the TV's onscreen display registers volume changes, the speaker volume does not change.
There is a setting on the TV that changes audio output from fixed to variable which I have selected. This when working is preferable as I can see on-screen evidence that my command was received. Though I am sure it is more technical, it seems as though the TV is sending audio at different volume? to the receiver, making the volume at the 5.1 speakers go up or down without the receiver volume setting changing.
Through the resend A/V codes menu I have found that when the on-screen displayed volume does not move with the speaker volume, I can send the code "process initialize" to re-sync everything. Sending this code resets the TV onscreen display volume to 24 and for the next few hours makes the audio commands work as desired. This does not fix it permanently however and I hate pressing buttons I don't understand like this. Is anyone familiar with A/V console commands who could offer me some assistance or explanation of what "process initialize" is actually doing?
Thank you.
