Installation issues / Re: LG LCD Template
« on: November 06, 2010, 10:15:26 pm »
Barney, now that I got pluto-generic-serial-device installed, I completed the steps in http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=9729.msg74457#msg74457 and I'm now seeing an issue output in kern.log:

Installation issues / Re: Ubuntu 8.10 end of life breaks installer
« on: November 06, 2010, 05:10:08 pm »
I had the same issue recently for libtcltk-ruby1.8 (http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=10903.0). I determined that universe for both intrepid-updates and intrepid-security referenced a non-existent file. My work around was to remove universe from both lines in /etc/apt/sources.list and then do the install at which point an older version of the libtcltk-ruby1.8 package was successfully installed.

I posted a message on ubuntu forums (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1614965) looking for information on how to resolve the issue.

I managed to get it to install.

I had to comment out the intrepid-updates and intrepid-security lines in /etc/apt/source.list.

I tried your suggestion but still no success. I have traversed to the various sites that claim to have the file but when I dig down through the directories the file just doesn't exist.

Per http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=9729.msg75308#msg75308, I have been trying to get my LG TV to PNP with linuxMCE and after further searching I found the following entry in /var/log/pluto/Spawn_cdc_4016.log: "Problem installing pluto-generic-serial-device (100)."

Not sure about why pnp won't detect the TV. Is it possible to manually add the LG in web admin from the 37LH30 Template (2126)?
[/quote]

I tried that yesterday.  After I specified it from web admin some stuff popped up on the TV monitor to specify additional settings but after selecting the necessary settings LinuxMCE complained that the TV was not accessible or something like that and I was forced to press OK to acknowledge the message.

As seen below, the operating system is detecting the connection and disconnection of the cable. LinuxMCE seems to behave oblivious to the actions.

I confirmed that my null modem cable matched your pin-outs (which are consistent with those listed in the LG manual).

I also reattached the USB adapter and tried it and I was able to use it to communicate to the TV using TestSerialPort via ttyUSB1. It appears that I had been trying ttyUSB0 previously.

Unfortunately, neither approach triggers PNP capabilities.

Any idea what causes the 20_LG_TV.sh script to run or where it is ran from?

Thanks, Tom

I bought a RS232 to USB adapter (Cables Unlimted USB 2.0 to Serial DB9 Adapter) but it failed to work for me so I ordered up a Gigabyte motherboard COMM port Adapter and connected directly to the Null modem cable (StarTech.com Serial Null Modem Cable - DB-9 Female - DB-9 Female). I was then able to successfully send commands to the TV but LinuxMCE still failed to recognize the connection when I connected the TV to the computer. Could this be because I'm running a hybrid and not an MD?

I do have a number of USB devices on my system (USB-UIRT, remote, and wireless keyboard/mouse).

I'll do the rest of the configuration steps noted in your previous posting and see if I can get it set up manually for the time being.

These questions correspond to posting: http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=9729.msg74457#msg74457

I have an LG 55LH40 connected to a hybrid which I'm hoping to get working effectively with LinuxMCE.

1. Ensure that your LG TV has the same commands as device template 2126. Check your manual. As far as I can see (looking at recent LG manuals) most LGs share mostly the same RS232 commands.

My ignorance prevented me from effectively performing this request.  After much looking around the LinuxMCE wiki I guessed that I had to basically jump down to the 3rd, 4th, and 5th entries in the list to confirm the commands.  My manual and the commands are different as the 6th entry notes some of the necessary changes.

Why not just create a new device template based on the existing template rather than modifying the existing template? The LG 55LH40 has an additional HDMI port (#4). Should an entirely new device template be created? According to my manual, 18 TVs are controlled by the same commands.

2. Change the Plug and Play script  on your MD in /usr/pluto/pnp/20_LG_TV.sh to point to device template 2126. It should look like this.

Does the hybrid use the same script?  I updated the script and disconnected the serial connection and reconnected but the connection was not acted upon. I also tried using the TV portion of the Setup Wizard but it failed to detect the serial connection as well. I can send commands directly to the serial connection and I know it works because I can turn off the TV and then turn it back on again.

I will do everything necessary to get this to work because I bought this specific TV because of the RS232 interface.  I also want to ensure that the next time I decide to reinstall from scratch that minimal configuration will be necessary and can all be done from the Setup Wizard.

Thanks, Tom

http://svn.linuxmce.org/trac.cgi/ticket/864 was created to track issue 2.

I'll create tickets for the other if they are confirmed to be something other than user errors.

Installation issues / 8.10 Installation Experience for hybrid
« on: October 20, 2010, 11:06:53 pm »
I performed an Internet installation on October 6, 2010 using new-installer-latest.tar.gz per http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Installing_0810. (Actually I installed multiple times because of problems that I encountered.)

My previously installed version was experiencing a number of issues in addition to still wanting to use avenard repo so I decided to reinstall from scratch.  FYI: The issues that I was experiencing vanished after the re-installation.

The reason that I had to reinstall the new version multiple times is because the internal data drives wanted to be configured while in the middle of going through the Setup process. Usually I was specifying the room names at the time at which point the Setup would jump forward in the Setup to configuring the AV equipment so I couldn't complete specifying the room names and every thing else associated with that setup screen (e.g. HDHomeRun). After reading through various forum postings I concluded that I needed to disconnect the internal drives to complete the setup successfully. I disconnected the power to my three internal data drives, reinstalled from scratch, and then I was able to successfully complete the Setup process. My RECOMMENDATION would be to disable the drive configuration until after the Setup process has been completed.

Other issues encountered:

1. After confirming all of the Video and Audio settings the mouse pointer ends up in the middle of the screen. This causes the text that appears in the middle of the screen to vanish immediately after it is displayed. I moved the pointer off the middle and then the text remained so I could see the installation comments as they appeared. I noticed the same behavior when the machine is booting up. Maybe the mouse pointer can be moved to the upper left corner rather than the center of the display.

2. I was unable to press "model isn't on the list" when specifying a Pioneer receiver. The button failed to respond to the button press. Seemed like a defect.

3. Specifying SchedulesDirect information during the Setup process failed to get properly recorded with the LMCE-default video source. I had to specify it again when configuring the MythTV backend.  Seemed like a defect.

4. The MythTV frontend was unable to delete previously recorded MythTV shows after the re-installation because the files were owned by root instead of mythtv in the PVR directories. I changed the ownership of the files to mythtv and I was able to delete again.  Maybe the drive configuration could confirm that the files have proper permissions when a drive is added. I migrated the recordings per http://www.mythpvr.com/mythtv/tips/migrate-recordings.html.

Other Comments:

1. I had microscopic fonts in KDE so I had to revise Start_X_Wrapper.sh per http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Display_Drivers. My video card is MSI N210-MD512H GeForce 210 512MB 64-bit GDDR2 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready Low Profile Ready Video Card.

2. I had KDE overscanning which I addressed via http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?action=printpage;topic=9580.0. Strangely, the version of nvidia-settings that is installed by default does not have the overscanning setting as an option so I downloaded the nvidia-settings associated with 195.36.15 (http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/nvidia-settings/nvidia-settings/nvidia-settings-195.36.15.tar.gz) and replaced the installed version. Why isn't the proper version of nvidia-settings installed?

I still need to configure my Pioneer receiver as well as my LG TV. Hopefully I will be able to get to them in the coming week or two. I don't think that either are currently supported but similar models are supported.

OK. I'm running a hybrid so that explains the behavior. Thanks!

And no, I did not know about the WebDT.

I did an install from scratch last week (2010-10-08) using new-installer-latest.tar.gz and this issue is still present.

I checked for the new file (~/.kde/share/config/kscreensaverrc) noted in http://svn.linuxmce.org/trac.cgi/ticket/600 but it does not exist.

/usr/pluto/bin/Start_KDE.sh on my computer has the additional code but it obviously has never been executed. So either Start_KDE.sh has never been executed (where is it invoked?) or kcheckrunning returned a non-zero status when executed within the script (I tried kcheckrunning from within a terminal and it returned a zero result as expected).
