Users / Replacing a network card
« on: December 10, 2011, 04:43:39 pm »
My network card (Rosewill RC-401-EX Network Card Gigabit Low Profile 10/ 100/ 1000Mbps PCI-Express 1 x RJ45) died this past week after two years of use so I bought a new network card with a higher user rating (Intel EXPI9301CT Desktop Adapter Gigabit CT 10/ 100/ 1000Mbps PCI-Express 1 x RJ45) and attempted to install it.

The new card had no device drivers installed by default so I grabbed them from Intel and built and installed them per their directions.

Even though I had removed the defective network card, the 8.10 LinuxMCE system was still attempting to use it and it ignored my new card. I eventually tracked down this entry http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Internal_and_External_networks_swapped/not_working and updated my /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules file to eliminate the removed card and to provide the new card a the old card's name. My system then worked as expected again.

I was just hoping that a reboot after getting the new card installed with its device driver would be sufficient to get things functioning. Was there a more appropriate way for dealing with this situation?

Users / Re: Gyration Remote Works on Core but not Media Directors
« on: December 10, 2011, 02:06:28 pm »
I did an update/upgrade yesterday of my 8.10 system and the functionality of my Gyration GYR3101US deteriorated.

Specifically, volume up and down did not work nor did the mute although I think volume down caused MythTV to turn off. The power button did nothing and the pause acted as if the Windows button had been pressed.

The #59 entry of the 1812 template matched the entries in http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php/topic,11871.msg83769.html#msg83769

It looked like the entries that Seth noted as different http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php/topic,11871.msg83808.html#msg83808 were the ones that I was having problems with so I updated the 1812 template with them and did a Quick Reload Router and now my remote works as expected again.

Now the question is why is the behavior of my remote different than others?

Installation issues / Re: LG LCD Template

Success!!!

Although I thought that Sara had forced a router restart it appears that one still needed to be done based on the log. So I rebooted the system and to my great delight the power button on my remote would cause the TV to turn off and on. Fortunately that is all of the functionality that I require.

If anyone can point me in a direction to track down why Sara failed to auto-detect the TV then I would attempt to track down the cause of that issue.

Thanks!!!

Now I'm off to figure out why the AVWizard doesn't want to show up during the reboot.  I need to change the UI since TV playback is showing a poor quality picture.

I continue to fail to be able to get my hybrid to interact with my LG TV.

I rebuilt my system from scratch again on March 9th, 2011 with the most recent snapshot available. It appeared that it contained all of the necessary changes.

Sara failed to recognize the TV during installation so today I finally went ahead and created the device from the admin using the 2126 device template at which point stuff showed up on the screen and took me to Sara to complete the installation. I also set the "COM Port on PC" to be the USB1 specific selection from the admin. I then pressed the Test code button for #192 On from the Edit IR codes page but nothing happened to the TV. Is there a log file somewhere that captured the action?

The following successfully turns on the TV:
/usr/pluto/bin/TestSerialPort -p /dev/ttyUSB1 -P N81 -b 9600 -t "ka 00 01\r\n" -s "a 01 " -i 8

Very strange that you can manually send the command. It seems that something must be wrong with your ruby commands.
...
Also, did LinuxMCE detect the LGTV and ask you what room etc?

I tried adding
Code: [Select]
conn_.Send("ka 1 01\r")and
Code: [Select]
conn_.Send("ka 01 01\r")to numbers 0 and 1 for testing purposes but neither activated the TV when tested from the Edit IR codes page.

I did notice the following in theDCERouter.log file whenever a command was sent to the TV. I don't know if it is relevant or not.
Code: [Select]

So it appears that outside LinuxMCE the TV can be controlled but within LinuxMCE something is not set up correctly with respect to the serial connection. Device 20 does not have a log file.

I never got LinuxMCE to automatically detect the serial connection. I had to set it up manually (obviously wrong).

I haven't had much chance to play with things lately but I do notice that a dialog flashes on screen during the boot with '37LH30' in it although I still see no behavioral differences.

Pressing the Main Menu button on my Gyration remote produces the following output in /var/log/pluto/DCERouter.log

/usr/pluto/bin/TestSerialPort -p /dev/ttyUSB0 -P N81 -b 9600 -t "ka 00 01\r\n" -s "a 01 " -i 8

Users / Re: How to disable jumping to live TV when starting mythtv frontend
« on: November 20, 2010, 12:50:13 am »
This functionality is intentional and integral to how LinuxMCE functions and works.  The system 'uses' mythtv (or vdr) to provide recording (and scheduling) and livetv viewing functionality.  If you wish to use mythtv standalone you should really look at the mythbuntu distribution.

J.

OK, the "TV" button accesses live TV, fine. I choose LinuxMCE because it offers more than just MythTV and I want to make use of those capabilities.

Initially I thought that the Video GUI was pretty nice, but now that I have 100s and 100s and 100s of videos I find that it basically sucks. That's what's nice about the MythTV frontend, it nicely categorized the shows. If my daughter wanted to watch Animalia then she would move to that category and select a show, if she wanted to watch Word Girl then she would move to that category and select a show, and this was very easy for her to perform. She could quickly examine the descriptions of the shows and select one. Doing the same thing from the LinuxMCE Video GUI is very tedious.

Is the Video GUI cast in stone or can it be extended? Maybe it could make use of the categories from MythTV as well. Maybe it could display the description of a video without going to the sub-screen and then maybe the left/right buttons could move between videos so descriptions can be quickly reviewed.

I much prefer the MythTV interface. Is the annoying behavior hard-coded into LinuxMCE?

How does one disable jumping to live TV when the MythTV frontend is started? It doesn't appear to be MythTV related because I couldn't find a setting for it and my frontend running on my notebook doesn't default to that behavior.

I just about never watch live TV so this behavior is extremely annoying especially if I'm recording a sporting event and it jumps to it so now I know the score.

I believe that the old-releases.ubuntu.com repository is now back to a consistent state. I was able to do an apt-get update; apt-get upgrade successfully using old-releases.ubuntu.com.

Per https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apt/+bug/673446

This was actually an issue with the archive at old-releases.ubuntu.com, which has been fixed.

My posting to http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1614965 seems to fallen on deaf ears so I tried another approach by posting a defect against the apt package (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apt/+bug/673446).

The package data on old-releases.ubuntu.com is inconsistent with the files on the server and needs to be rectified.

I'll let you know if any progress is made.

I have created a ticket (http://svn.linuxmce.org/trac.cgi/ticket/893#preview) for the issue.

For the time being, can I just delete the file by doing a 'sudo rm <filename>' or will that cause problems with LinuxMCE?

Thanks, Tom

/home/flickr and all of its subdirectories and files have root for both owner and group permissions. Should the owner and group permissions be something else or should the program doing the deletion have elevated permissions?

The "So Much Trouble" picture needs to go away before the gals in the house skin me alive.

Barney, I'm going to assume that my comments in my previous posting were related to the apt-get update/upgrade that I did recently and are not related to the matters of this thread.

So now my question is how do I know if the template is working or not?  I'm not seeing any behavioral changes in the system.

I thought that at least the display would turn off when I select "Display off" after pressing the power button on my remote but that doesn't even occur.

I went through the Setup Wizard and confirmed that it knows that the TV is connected via the serial cable.
