Users / 2 home automation gateways
« on: September 05, 2011, 11:35:52 am »

For the moment, i've got an EIB IP Router that interconnects linuxmce with my home automation (EIB).
This works great with the EIBD solution.

Now i need a second gateway for another building.
Is it smart to buy the same IP Router, or is it better to use another technology? Fe an USB gateway instead of IP?
With other words, can i use 2 eibd drivers, or will this conflict somewhere?

Feature requests & roadmap / Demo server
« on: September 05, 2011, 08:11:37 am »

With the discussion of new features (fe monitoring), i was wondering how we could be able to show something.
You can start uploading printscreens and so, but i believe this isn't the way.

Is their a way to give somebody access with only read privilege?
This way, others can have a look without touching your server.

Or is it an option to install an online demo server?

Or are there other ways?

Installation issues / [Solved] Several lights in 1 room
« on: August 31, 2011, 01:38:46 pm »

I noticed that when you put 2 or more lights in 1 room, you control them all at once with an orbiter.

Is there a way to split them?
So that you'll have several buttons on your top row with the different light switches?

Users / Orbiter skins
« on: August 30, 2011, 07:29:25 pm »

I've tried all (web)orbiters skin for my Android.
Is it possible that not all skins change anything. Or at least not at first sight? Or has it something to do with the weborbiter?
I've choosed another skin, did a full regen of that orbiter and a reload. Afterwards i've opened it with http://corius/lmce-admin/weborbiter.php to take an easy printscreen.

Hereby a printscreen of all different skins.
Maybe this is interesting to put on a wiki page as well? This way people have an overview of the different skins.

ps if this is right, maybe the other skins should be cleaned, or renamed? To avoid confusion...

Feature requests & roadmap / Monitoring
« on: August 29, 2011, 08:19:46 am »
Maybe a new feature in linuxmce is a monitoring tool?

I don't know how (if?) you guys check today the bandwidth, disk space, services...?
Personally i use cacti a lot, i'm a network engineer, therefor i use it very much. It's easy to install (through apt-get install cacti), easy to maintain (webinterface / snmp based), nice to see (cool graphs, up/down status).

This way, we could easily manage/troubleshoot/alert some extra stuff:
  • Usuage: network bandwidth, internet load, memory use, disk space...
  • Status: orbiter ports listening, mysql running, domotica link there, phones up...
  • Log: very nice syslog server in there...
  • Alerting: send mails/sms when something happens, run scripts...
  • ...

And of course, when you've got other devices in your network that are snmp capable (aren't they all these days?), you can add them as well.
I'm thinking about a switch, a modem/router, normal pc's, ip phones, home automation links, power meters, water meters...

One of these days, i'll install cacti on my linuxmce server (I first need to take of backup of it  ::) ).
And after a couple of day, i'll see to extract some graphs as an example.

Feature requests & roadmap / New Home Automation groups
« on: August 26, 2011, 12:13:27 pm »

Today, almost all outputs relays (lights, power sockets...) must be in 'lights'.
Not so very clear if you're really interested in the home automation part.   ???
Posde suggested me to do some suggestion (topic power outlet) about possible groups. So with this topic, i want to start the subject if more groups are needed, and what the best groups would be.

These are different blocks I’m thinking about. These are in my eyes different things to make your home intelligent. Most are of course just in/output relays. But I personally think it would be clearer for everyone that you can arrange your devices (relays) in these groups.

Of course, I’ll be missing some things. So feel free to add/regroup/rename/… some of them.
Once the groups are defined, I’ll see if I can put some icons behind it.

  • Inputs
Push button, on/off switch, sensor static (shock, motion, water, fire…), sensor dynamic (light, waterlevel, temperature…)

  • Lighting
Chandeliers, ceiling fixtures, outdoor lights, wall sconces, floor lights, table lamps

  • HVAC
    Heating, ventilation, air conditioning

  • Power outlet
    Stand-alone, groups

  • Entry points
    Door, window, gate, garage door

  • Window covering
    Blind, solar shades, drapery

  • Varia
    Water tap, Gas valve

Thanks for your feedback!

Installation issues / [Solved] Generic Proxy Orbiter
« on: August 24, 2011, 07:40:59 pm »

I'm trying to get my android phone to be connected with linuxMCE.
I follow the procedure as seen on

I'm blocked on point 7.
Click the button 'Pick Device Template'. The Add Child Device Window will close, and the Generic Web Device will be added to the Core, as the updated Device Tree will show.
When i do a full regen of the specific orbiter, i got the space for the status. But no status. It seems to stop without doing anything.
A full regen of the default orbiter (fe OnScreen orbiter) is working correctly.

A bit strange to me, point 1-8 went very fast.
A new Generic Proxy Orbiter will also be created automatically. Watch the Orbiter generation process on the Orbiters page: Wizard-->Devices-->Orbiters.
When i look there, nothing special to see, a standard roaming orbiters is created.

When i check the server, nothing is listening on port 3461.
So i'm a bit stuck now...

Thanks for any hints, tips or tricks...

Feature requests & roadmap / Power outlets
« on: August 23, 2011, 05:47:34 pm »

I can find in linuxMCE a place where i can put all my lights.
But is there a specific place to add my 'power outlets'?

In my situation, i've put all my outlets behind a relay. The idea behind this is to safe power. Fe
  • when you leave your home for work, you can shut down all electric equipment.
  • when you go to sleep, shut everything, except your washing machine and so
  • You can control your fish tank (lights longer on sunday and so)...
So i want to create some scenario's where i can shut down my house with a specific button, from remote...
Is the idea that i put this is a light, or am i missing something?

Installation issues / mysql rights
« on: July 21, 2011, 05:12:26 pm »
You won't believe it, but i messed up my database right completely...
I was trying to install extra things on the server (like cacti, phpmyadmin...).

And somewhere, i messed up. I can't access the webmin anymore. It just returns a blank page.
When i stop the mysqld, and restart it with " sudo mysqld --skip-grant-tables", i can access it again.
So somewhere i messed up the rights.

Any idea how i can repair this? :$

Installation issues / Fixed IP
« on: July 21, 2011, 10:51:18 am »

All my network devices use dhcp.

Nice because this way i can change whatever i want (reason of dhcp).
Not nice because i don't find the option in linuxmce to assign fix ip's.

Several things in my network must be know by their ip to interconnect internally (fe printers, workstations with shares, IP-router of KNX...)
I found out that i can add fixed ip's in /etc/dhcp3/dhcpd-extra.conf, and it works (yeahhh).

more dhcpd-extra.conf
Code: [Select]
host {
  hardware ethernet 00:11:22:33:44:55;

And then a restart of the dhcp server
Code: [Select]
/etc/init.d/dhcp3-server restart

Works great, but now my question, is this the way to do it? Or will some things not work as supposed?

Installation issues / [Solved] KNX IP ROUTER 750
« on: July 18, 2011, 07:05:23 pm »

To control my home automation, i've got a KNX IP ROUTER 750.
Basically, this convert my ethernet network with the EIB.

Can you give me a hint how i can insert this into linuxmce in order to work?

Installation issues / Installation drops direct to initramfs
« on: July 13, 2011, 07:38:26 pm »

When i'm trying one of the latest versions (24147 & 24164), the installation stops almost directly into a prompt 'initramfs'. The only thing i can choose is the language and the next question (linuxmce, kubuntu...). I tried linuxmce or kubuntu, but both give the same result.
When i take an old version (fe 24012), the installation starts without any problem.

Any idea what goes wrong?

Installation issues / {extif} for second interface
« on: June 26, 2011, 04:43:19 pm »

I'm having troubles with my 2 network cards. These are 2 build in ones on a Dell poweredge server.

  • In the config, the first one (WAN) is tagged as {extif}, and doesn't get a IP from my provider. The second one (LAN) is seen correctly (fixed ip on eth0).
    So this isn't working.
  • When i now swap the cables and chooes 'swap interfaces', my new WAN-port is tagged as eth0 and gets a proper IP from the provider.
The second one is now tagged as {extif} with a fix ip.

So it's working in situation 2, but i suppose that something isn't 100% correct here.
Any thoughts on it?

Feature requests & roadmap / Velbus: CAN bus
« on: December 22, 2010, 10:09:06 am »

A really nice (and not so expensive) domotica system is Velbus. It has been created by Velleman. Checkout
They've got almost a solution for all systems, and even a software center.
But this software center is 'too' expensive.
Once you like the opensource software world... ;)

Velbus is working on the system 'CAN bus'.
And i'm thinking to see how i can implement this in linuxMCE.

Is it difficult to do this?
Or is anybody willing to have look a it?

Installation issues / Dell PowerEdge 850; fresh install
« on: December 19, 2010, 11:55:08 am »

I'm trying to install the latest version of LinuxMCE (8.10-23535-i386) on a dell server.
First installation goes fine, but once i've got the desktop, i'm lost.

I can't find anywhere what tot do. Just a script on the desktop where i can run 'linuxMCE'.
A script starts to run, and after a while, i got an error 'Error - KdeSudo,   Command not found!'.
Only thing i can do is click 'OK'. The script goes on, but 'holds/freeze'.
I've got also the idea that some things aren't found to install (internet issue?). But the scripts runs on, so i think it's not a big issue?

Any idea what i can/must do now?

ps is it normal that in the boot menu of the cd, the options 'install kubuntu' and 'install linuxmce' gives the same result?  ???
