I'm taking 1004 for a testdrive at home. Installation went very nicely, aside from asterisk not picking up (Foxi352 got the ticket already),
I noticed artefacts appearing after watching TV for a while, getting out of mythtv, running the screensaver or watching a video, then they appear. Reboot of the MD fixes that. Nvidia drivers 260 are installed.

Sounds like issue I was having, after some searching I found out my card (GT430) had issues with 260 driver (I think a few other cards do as well). Upgrading to 285.05.09 which fixed all artifact issues for me.

Not sure what the cards are like but my pick is the HDHomerun http://lmcecompatible.com/#ecwid:category=280106&mode=product&product=839061, I've had for a year or so now and never had an issue plus the big benefit is that it does not takeup space in the box.

Kill X, make a backup of nvidia-install.sh, delete its contents and save. Then try the 285 install which I think will removes the 260 drivers?

After reboot 260 should not be reinstalled.

I also had issues with my GT430 and 260 drivers. I'm now running 285.05.09 with no problems.

I deleted the contents of my nvidia-install.sh so 260 would not get reinstalled although not sure if this is actually required.

Welcome to the community

First off if not currently using LMCE then it would be a good idea to get a box up and running just to play with. You are very lucky you will be the only one living in the house as many of us have to build systems while living with SWMBO and constantly face the firing squad 

Probably most important thing is to make sure you get Nvidia cards and 2 nics in the core or else you will have issues before you even start. Also bear in mind that 810 does not support some of the newer hardware althought I'm not sure to what extent.

Some things will depend on what level of renovating you are doing such as automation would be either KNX or Z-Wave (there are others but these 2 seem to be pref technologies at the moment). KNX requires rewire and z-wave just gets attached to existing switches.

I use HDHomerun for TV and has always run well compared to PCI cards I've used plus does not takeup space in the core. For storage some use NAS and others such as myself have storage in the core.

Cat6-7 probably a better option as cost difference over 5e is minimal and it does give a little bit more 'future proofing'.

As for what order to do things its really up to what you want working first. Get a core up and running first with some media on it made sure all working well and then image often so that if/when something breaks it is easy to roll back.

I think the front page of the wiki can be brought under control. Its when you start to drill down that the problems really get bad. So here is my suggestion:

Looking at the "Support" heading on the wiki front page, it seems to me that "Hardware" and "Troubleshooting" do not need to be there. I'd suggest that everything in those categories be moved to "Tutorials/Guides". Then we should really organize the "Tutorials/Guides" category. Lacking any better idea, why not organize it as it appears on the TV screen - Lights, Media, Climate, Security, Telecom, and Advanced? Then we might want to add "Hardware", and "Installation". If these titles need more info we could use parentheses, ie Lights (Home Automation). I think that all Hardware or Troubleshooting articles would fit nicely in those categories.

I was thinking about this idea today but using the web admin breakdown as it expands the list a little more (such as irrigation and events along with network related info, power usage monitoring etc etc).

Either way I think it could be a good starting point to break the site down into manageable areas.

It would be good to have a central place for communication. Is it possible to have something like a forum board or even a child board for wiki under users or developers?

The install documentation appears to be massive and I had planned to go through all those pages and add the category install to them to group all the pages together and then start hacking out duplication etc. Maybe something that could be applied else where as we find things needing to be cleaned up?

You could go with 1004 unless you need asterisk functionality. I've been using it for months now and system runs a lot better than 810. http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Installing_1004

I have http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Toshiba_RAS-series_Air_Condition which is controlled by IR but using ruby commands in template.

Maybe you could build a template similar to that? Template ID is 2131

IR seems the only option for this A/C (maybe a very expensive controller available somewhere) but as Thom pointed out its not able to communicate the state of the system which is extremely frustrating when others in the house use the A/C remote and LMCE does not know if its been turned on or off.

Checkout Clonezilla which seems to be the preferred backup choice of many. Just image the drive and can be restored very quickly.

I've used Acronis True image up until recently which has been great. I could restore a full image backup in less than 15mins. It does not seem to work with 1004 for some reason so I'm going to start using clonezilla.

Downside unlike VM is that system has to be turned off to perform backup but pretty minor since pretty quick. Probably a lot less hassle than using VM.

Any idea why the log is not being created on my machine? This is on 1004 I had not problems on 810.

Check out www.hobby-boards.com for info on 1-wire and some devices available. While I have not got mine working yet other have http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=11328.msg79599#msg79599 has a pic of what the floorplan displays. Plus I think system can respond to events like when temp reaches X turn A/C on.

Could this be why I'm getting the error?

For future devices, is this the only section of code that gets modified?.... just trying to learn how these template work.
