LinuxMCE / Users / Re: Orbiter crash when retrieving video list

Still the same problem.
I think it might have to do with the access time for the video files. Maybe there is some kind of time-out being reached. The video files are on the server on a software raid (5) array, and there are over 4,000 of them. If I log into the orbiter and access the files from the command line (using a command like "du"), then afterwards I can retrieve the video list successfully.
Anyway, I have a work around now. I'll see if I can get any further with this.

Hmmm, there seems to be a dependency on libvdpau1 >= 0.2 for the mythtv and xine packages, but libvdpau is not in the sources list on my core (which still has it's default sources list from the alpha install).
It's not really a problem to get libvdpau from the avenard repository, but as I understood it the avenard repository is separate from the official linuxmce repository. Am I correct or is my sources.list out of date?
Other than that all the updates have installed on my core. I'll upgrade my MD later this week.
Oh, and I agree with phenigma: Congratulations on the Beta2, and thanks for your hard work!

LinuxMCE / Users / Orbiter crash when retrieving video list
|
on: November 23, 2009, 08:08:59 pm

Hello, For some reason my Orbiter crashes when I select Media - Video. The problem already occurred intermittently in the past, but recently I haven't been able to open the list of videos at all. My experience was that this crash only occurs after my media director has rebooted. If I select Media - Video and it works, then it will stay working, otherwise it will crash immediately. Unfortunately, the last few days it always crashed I suspect it may have to do with the number of video files that I have, since that is the only thing that (I think) has changed. Because I have not yet tagged all my videos I always switched to the Filename sort order. That may explain why subsequent openings of the video list always succeeded; because of the directory structure there wouldn't be too many files in it at once. Anyway, I don't have any problems with Media - Audio, that one always works. I checked the logging files, but I'm not experienced enough in LinuxMCE yet to make much of them. I included the sections I think are relevant below. The LaunchOrbiter.sh.log on the media director: ========== NEW LOG SECTION ========== 1 11/23/09 19:56:54 51 (spawning-device) Starting... 1 1 11/23/09 19:56:55 51 (spawning-device) Found /usr/pluto/bin/LaunchOrbiter.sh 05 11/23/09 19:57:00.128 will overwrite wm window id // void X11wrapper::Assign_WmWindow(Window) <0xb56ffb90> 05 11/23/09 19:57:00.153 Using masked UI? LinuxMCE / Users / Re: Selecting a set of screensaver pictures

Thanks, I'll look into that. In the mean time I've just made a backup of the File_Attribute table in the pluto_media database, then removed all entries that assigned the ScreenSaver attribute. After that I selected the pictures I wanted for the other set in the webadmin. So to switch sets I have to remove the entries from the table and restore the backup associated with the set I want. (The restore only adds non-existing entries, it will not overwrite any removed entries). It's a quick and dirty hack, but for now it enables me to do what I want (party is on friday ). As soon as I have time I'll see if I can make a more elegant solution.

LinuxMCE / Users / Selecting a set of screensaver pictures
|

Hello,
I have a quick question; is it possible to make a kind of playlist for pictures and select the one you want to use for a screen saver?
The reason I'm asking is because I have my regular set screensaver pictures, and a set of pictures I want to show during a party, and I'd like to switch between the two, without having to select each individual picture from the set in the webadmin.
If not I guess I'll just use some shell scripting and SQL commands.
Thanks.

My TV is a Thomson Intuiva (don't know the exact type number, I will look it up). I bought it a few years ago as a HD-ready TV, so I'm using it at 720p on its HDMI port.

Thanks,
The sudo ssh thing works, I'll disable my root account.
There is a mythtv user on my system and it seems logical that that one is used to update the listings. I just don't understand how that script comes to the conclusion that /root is the home directory of the mythtv user. I'm looking in to this. If I do "su mythtv" (as root) and then run mythfilldatabase, everything seems to update fine. So, I guess its not the update script or the mythfilldatabase, but it has something to do from where the mythfilldatabase is started. Unfortunately I can't find that location, at least I couldn't find a cron job that runs mythfilldatabase. So could somebody tell me how, and from where the update is started?
The overscan on my TV is really bad; I have to reduce the screen by 9% before everything is visible. So quite a bit falls of the edges in mythtv (especially in the config screens, which makes setup quite hard). Am I right in thinking that the AV settings not only affects the orbiter but also the applications spawned from the "Advanced"-"Computing" menu (which includes MythTV Setup)? At least I don't seem to lose any part of the screen in those applications. So I guess I'll start looking there, search for the differences and see if I can apply the same trick to the "Media"-"TV" menu.
Anyway, thanks for the help so far.

LinuxMCE / Users / Quirks?

Hello,
I'm new to LinuxMCE, and quite impressed by it. I've been playing with it for about two weeks now, and I noticed some quirks. Probably because I don't understand LinuxMCE yet, but possibly caused by my tinkering.
So I wondered if anybody else noticed the same things. So here goes: - When I log in on the core as "mhorst" (the account I used during the Ubuntu setup) and then SSH to one the media directors, I my user id suddenly becomes "sambahelper". When I try "su mhorst", I still end up in the sambahelper account. - The sambahelper account does not seem to have sudo rights, unlike the mhorst account. Combined with the previous quirk that severely limited my ability to do anything on the media directors. My workaround is currently to enable the root account on the core, and then SSH as root to the media director.
- In the AV setup wizard I indicated the boundaries of my screen (my TV only displays 91% of the actual screen), but mythTV still tries to use the full screen. Strangely MythTV setup does seem to use the boundaries. - The previous quirk wouldn't be much of an issues since there is a "Screen Setup Wizards" option in the "Utilities / Setup" - "Setup" menu of MythTV. Unfortunately, that wizard doesn't seem to have any effect.
- I also suspect Xine tries to use the full screen, and not the boundaries I set in the AV wizard. At least, I had to set the subtitle offset to 30, exactly the number of pixels that falls off the bottom of my TV. - Some subtitles seem to work in Xine and some don't. Subtitles in ".srt" files work. Subtitles in ".idx"/".sub" files don't seem to work. I haven't tried any other subtitle format yet. I guess it's just a matter of setting the right values in /etc/pluto/xine.conf, but I haven't found them yet.
I'll continue to experiment to see if I can find a way around these things. But before I put too much time in them, I thought I should ask if anybody else has notices and/or solved the same things.
EDIT: Oh and one I alsmost forgot: - I use the tv_grab_nl_py script to get my TV listings. It uses a cache, which is stored in /root/.xmltv/program_cache. Somehow, during a mythfilldatabase run it doesn't have rights to modify this cache, and it fails. It is supposed to use the home directory of the user that starts it for caching, so I don't get how it is possible that it does not have the rights to remove that file. For now I have to work around this by manually running mythfilldatabase as root.

I started it in a root terminal by typing "nvidia-xconfig" and hitting enter . After the "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" step on the wiki, I added an extra step: "sudo nvidia-xconfig" If this works for you too, I guess I should add it to the wiki.

LinuxMCE / Installation issues / Can't get live TV since upgrade (solved)
|
on: September 12, 2009, 11:09:43 pm

Hello,
I'm new to LinuxMCE. I decided to try it out at the start of september, and so far I'm impressed. Since the upgrade from 4 september though, I could no longer watch live TV. I was planning on asking for help, but as I was writing this post and collecting and organizing the info I had so far, I thought of a few things I could still try and I managed to fix it by myself. So, this post is just in case somebody else may have the same problems.
My setup: I have a core with a PVR-500 capture card in a storage closet, and a Zotac Ion board as a media director in my living room. The problem I had: When I went to Media-TV the mythtv frontend is started, but it stays black for a while. Eventually linuxMCE gaves me the message that "MythTV is having problems. Reset the backend?", but neither Yes nor No seemed to solve anything. Also, playing the recorded programs from the Media Library - Watch Recordings menu in MythTV did not function, if I selected one the screen briefly turns black and I return to the selection menu.
The solution is used was this: on the media director I started the mythtvfrontend (said no to the question of whether to reset the backend) and went to: "Utilities / Setup" - "Setup" - "TV Settings" - "Playback" and enabled "Always stream recordings from the backend". I stopped the front end and start it again, and everything worked again.

LinuxMCE / Installation issues / Re: Zotac Ion board

Hello,
I followed the steps on the wiki to install a Zotac ION330 board as a media director. After I completed those steps I had to run nvidia-xconfig to actually enable the nvidia drivers, but other than that it is working.
I still get some tearing however, so I was wondering if the people that have smooth video playback could tell me if they used any special settings. (I'm just using the defaults set by nvidia-xconfig.)
Thanks.
