Installation issues / Re: Low Profile Tv Card? Whats the best for LinuxMCE
« on: November 18, 2010, 01:31:25 pm »
ebay is a good source for the older analog cards.  I picked up some pvr150s about a year ago for $15 apiece US.  They are pci cards and unfortunately those slots are becoming as scarce as hens teeth.  That was a reason I purchased the 1950 to see if it would work.  Another possibility are pcie cards.  I just some hvr1800 on ebay for about $25 us.  I ordered 2 for test.  They have separate digital and analog inputs so theoretically they should be able to work at the same time.  The digital could be connected to an external antenna to pick up broadcast digital while still being able to connect to analog cable.  Of course these have also been discontinued by hauppauge so ebay would probably be the best source for these.

I have not used that card but according to Linuxtv.org the digital portion works but the ntsc portion does not.  http://linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/ATSC_PCIe_Cards.  You may want to try a usb encoder.  I got the HVR-1950 to work with lmce.  The analog portion worked and I was able to scan digital channels.  There is a note though that the digital and analog tuners will not work at the same time so this sounds like an either or situation.

I don't believe that I ran into that but the post from etNHGfu8 could indicate that the original sources list could be used now.  I have not tried it yet to be sure though.

Now I am just asking out of curiosity, is there a time frame for a release for us to start testing?  No pressure, just something to look forward to.

No.  I believe that the binaries are specific to the version of kubuntu that is presently used.  Also, see follow this link to the end of the thread to see what is being done now by the developers.

Thx Thom.  Some of us have found a work around and have posted it in the forum.  This should help others install and use the system until a more permanent solution is found.

Thx for the hard work.

I saw you got your problem fixed with
http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=10917.0

hope you enjoyed your golf game!

I added some in the topic you mentioned above.  Hopefully it will help.

I did enjoy my golf game and as I predicted I lost several golf balls.  We are enjoying a late Indian Summer here and I have been trying to take advantage of it.  All that is supposed to change after this evening.

These threads need to be unified.  There are several that talk about the same thing.  The following is what I did for a successful install(as far as I can tell).

I downloaded an earlier snapshot.  After reading a post about how the snapshots were made I decided to use one that was created before end of life.  The snapshot I installed was 23324.  I would hazard a guess, unless you like frustration, steer away from snapshots that are less than 3.8GB.  Less than that then there are a lot of files that will need to be installed from the repositories that may not be there.  Using an earlier snapshot will also ensure the latest nvidia driver is installed.

Next, after reading another post about finding alternate repositories, I expanded on my sources.list file.

deb file:/usr/pluto/deb-cache/ ./
deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ intrepid  main restricted universe multiverse
deb-src http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ intrepid  main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ intrepid-updates  main restricted universe multiverse
deb-src http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ intrepid-updates  main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://deb.linuxmce.org/ubuntu/ intrepid  beta2
deb http://debian.slimdevices.com/ stable  main
deb http://packages.medibuntu.org/ intrepid  free non-free
deb http://deb.linuxmce.org/ubuntu/ 20dev_ubuntu  main

deb http://fastspeedtest.net/mirrors/ubuntu/ intrepid main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://fastspeedtest.net/mirrors/ubuntu/ intrepid-updates main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://fastspeedtest.net/mirrors/ubuntu/ intrepid-security main restricted universe multiverse

deb http://ubuntu.k-net.ru/ubuntu/ intrepid-backports main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://ubuntu.k-net.ru/ubuntu/ intrepid main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://ubuntu.k-net.ru/ubuntu/ intrepid-updates main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://ubuntu.k-net.ru/ubuntu/ intrepid-security main restricted universe multiverse

This may be overkill.  I know that an apt-get update took a lot longer and a dist-upgrade sucked in a lot more files but when I installed lmce I did not see any errors.

I did not use the script on the desktop to start lmce installation.  Instead I opted to sudio su in a terminal and go to the /root/new-installer directory and run the individual script files.  pre-install-from-repo.sh, mce-install.sh, and post-install.sh in that order.  I would be curious to see if the script on the desktop would work properly now since more files are being found for the installation.

Once this completed I rebooted then configured the avwizrd and then the setup wizard. Once completed mythtv seemed to be installed properly.  The only other thing I noticed that was not right was my pvr150 was not detected and waiting for me to configure in the setup wizard.  I was able to configure it in mythsetup from the computing link.  The pvr150 worked.  I installed and tested successfully an hvr1950 usb tuner/encoder.

I hope the above helps.  Please read through carefully.  In proof reading I found several typos and I probably missed some.

Well that is the 55 million dollar question.  The only package that I have seen die is the java6 package in the snapshot I am currently using.  I don't think that anything else is not loading that would be preventing mythtv to install and since mythtv should be forced to download from the linuxmce repositories that should not be a problem either since the ubuntu end of life should not be effecting those.  I am not sure when mythtv gets downloaded but I would think it happens when you make the choice in the setup wizard.

I am going to try again but this time I will try to install the java6 package before I start so the installer won't quit and I will also capture the output of the installers to look at after the installation is complete to see if there are any error messages that I may have missed as output was whizzing by.

But right now the last of the warm weather is happening today and I think I am going to go lose some golf balls while I can.

that version is also based on an end of life version of kubuntu.  you will probably have to change the sources.list references from xx.archive to old-releases.  that probably would not guarantee a good install though.  0810 is the way to go for the latest in capabilities.  It is going to be a matter of getting around the broken downloads.  I don't understand though why mythtv will not install since that should be coming from the linuxmce repository.

Hi all
          is 23426 @ 1.7gb a "whoops", ;D
or a temp. solution to end of life prob ?

regards,
Ian

The makedvd script is likely falling prone to the same issues the installer is.  That is: the script that creates the dvd installer downloads all of the intrepid packages from the ubuntu archives and probably needs to be updated to point to the old-releases repository the same as the actual installer/pluto database/Diskless_CreateTBZ all need to be.

J.

After reading the above I decided to dig out an older snapshot.  This seemed to help but did not fix.  I noticed two things when running the linuxmce install script from the desktop:  first the java jre package did not install and second the installer hung on the alsa package from the deb.linuxmce.org intrepid/beta2 repository.  I took care of the alsa package by downloading it directly from the repository and installing it.  The java package was not so easy.  I tried the same thing but it failed on unmet dependencies.  I then rebooted the machine and decided to run the individual scripts in the /root/new-installer directory.  The pre-install-from-repo.sh script ran with no errors.  The mce-install.sh script exited at the java installation.  I then did an apt-get -f install.  This installed the java package plus several others.  I ran the mce-install.sh script again and this time it completed successfully.  Finally I ran the post-install.sh script to completion without errors.  I rebooted the machine and now have the avwizard staring at me.

I hope this helps.

All this just to test the operation of an HVR-1950 usb tuner.

will the files that cannot be found during installation be included in an upcoming snapshot?   For some reason I was getting hung on Alsa package linuxmce beta2 repository.  That confused me since it is still available.

Installation issues / Re: CM15A help
« on: November 05, 2010, 01:20:24 pm »
Ok after a few dumb a$$ attacks I finally managed to get the latest snapshot installed on a dedicated machine.  I plugged my CM15A into the usb port and Linuxmce found it and installed software for it.  I then set up a light and addressed it to a current X10 lamp at B9.  I was able to turn the lamp on/off from lmce.  So it is not broke in the current snapshot.  Not knowing what problems may be introduced by running lmce in a virtual environment I hesitate to comment much on that other than I would make sure that you run virtual box as root and try again.  The only other things I can think of is if you are plugging your CM15A into an outlet strip the device will not be able to control X10 devices.  The transient protection devices in the strip will filter out X10 signals.  You may also try removing the batteries from the CM15A and then plugging it in to the lmce box.  You will not be able to store anything on the CM15A under lmce since the code was not written to take advantage of the memory capability of the CM15A.  Batteries are unnecessary.  I have also found that leaving the batteries in over time will produce undesirable results with the CM15A.  Wrong lights turning on under program control.  Every light in the house turning on when trying to turn on one light.

Good luck
