Users / New wiki entry (my first) - nothing cosmic though
« on: June 09, 2009, 10:19:25 am »
http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Problem-accessing-webadmin

It caught me out when playing with wifi and NIC setup on my MCE machine.  It should be obvious but you know what its like when your so close to a setup of a new system you sometimes miss the simple things!

Right, so i am having a moment of stupidity or i missed a stage during my install.  How do i get into the webadmin page from within MCE?  I have tried going computing / webadmin but nothing seems to happen?  Do i need to drop to kde and enter it from there?

Hi;

i am just going through my 810a2 install of mce.  I had a stable and updated kubuntu i386 install (with the latest nvidea drivers) running before going through the mce install.  Once i reboot i loose signal before the AV wizard starts and as such cannot move forward!

Similar had been reported with my motherboard here http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/ASUS_M3N78-EM  but having booted to recovery mode and reinstalled the latest drives again, on reboot the same happens and i loose signal before getting the av wizard up.  Is there anything else i can try to get my install moving~?

I have tried going through the number keys to switch output but nothing changes.  I have just edited xconf.org to vesa drivers and the av wizard appears.  Having been through the wizard and put xorg.conf back to nvidia my machine now stops after several iterations of stopping samba and restarting it.  Any thoughts?

If i leave it as VESA driver then the machine hangs post avwizard at the Installnewdevice is running stage

Installation issues / Cannot unmute PCM hence no audio over HDMI
« on: June 06, 2009, 10:18:16 am »
Hi guys, i am just working through my install of Kubuntu 810 and have a system up and running.  The issue i have is that i cannot unmute the PCM output within ALSA and as such get no audio over HDMI.  I have followed all the guides here and am running 1.0.20alsa with the HDMI output listed.  The attached screen grab shows that even from alsamixer within konsole i dont have the option to unmute PCM.

I have also tried amixer set PCM 90% unmute but with no change to the PCM mute status.

Does anyone have an idea how i might go forward from here?

Installation issues / Cant upgrade nvidia drivers and dont know why!
« on: June 05, 2009, 06:05:57 pm »
I am trying to update my nvidia drivers as per this guide;

http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Display_Drivers#NVidia_Chipsets

But am having problems.  Everytime i run telinit 1 the KDE shutdown seems to stop and then i am presented with another X session.  If i boot into recovery mode and then a root terminal sh nvidadriverversion-pkg1.run says file not found.

What am i doing wrong?  Is there another way around this issue?

Pretty much as per the title really.  Does it matter if i upgrade the alsa package before i install MCE or not?  In my mind i should have KDE as up to date as possible before installing MCE but that is based on other software and not MCE.

Has anyone tried 1.0.20 ALSA yet?  I am hoping it will solve some of the HDMI audio issues with my ASUS motherboard.

Users / vdr or myth for dvb-t?
« on: May 31, 2009, 12:25:20 pm »
Im hoping this will be a quick reply (albeit a stupid question). Should i be looking to use myth or vdr for a uk based mce install with a kworld usb dvb-t stick?  I would like to get a better understanding of how the pvr software works but dont have time to read in detail about both.  (The last of my components arrives next week so the install starts next weekend!)

Users / N800 orbiter, wii remote, mce or fiire chief?
« on: May 30, 2009, 04:53:17 pm »
Hi guys, i am just getting my first mce hybrid assembled now and am wondering what exactly i should use to control it!? If i go for an N800 is it easy enough to use an orbiter for everyday PVR/DVD/TV viewing (ie wife proof!) or would i be better to go the route of orbiter and remote control?

From what i can see there are 3 main remote options, MCE remote, fiire chief (not currently supported in 810) and wii remote. I like the idea of using a wii remote as it seems it should be easy enough for the Mrs to get on with, but personally i think im kind of hoping an orbiter can replace the remote completely.

Thoughts/tips/experiences?

Users / Does mce support USB-rs232 convertors?
« on: May 25, 2009, 09:56:27 pm »
My motherboard only supports 1xrs232 port which isnt going to be enough for what i have planned.  Does MCE support usb-rs232 convertors?

Users / Which slingbox do i need with mce?
« on: May 25, 2009, 09:46:02 pm »
Basically as the title to be honest?  What is the cheapest / lowest spec slingbox i can get away with for an MCE install?  All i want to be able to do is listen to mp3s / music / internet radio in my bed room so not even fussed about a decent display.

Thanks

Users / What size system partition?
« on: May 23, 2009, 05:02:44 pm »
I am just about to finish building my first hybrid and was wondering what size should i make the system partition for MCE?  I have a spare 250gb sata drive but it seems a bit of a waste to just have this as a system drive, im guessing i could get away with a much smaller drive, but what sort of size is about right?  Im looking for a fairly standard hybrid setup with all my music on a NAS and a 1TB drive for DVD rips.

Thanks.

Users / TV RS232 commands...how to..
« on: May 20, 2009, 10:43:45 pm »
Right guys, after some digging on the internet i have managed to find the rs232 protocols for my Dell 37In LCD.  I have attached the page from the spec document, but am unsure how to get this information into MCE in a usable fashion.

Can anyone help please?

Users / No fiire chief in 810 then what should i get?
« on: May 17, 2009, 09:56:13 pm »
Pretty much as the title really guys.  From what i can see there will be no fiire chief  support in 810 (whenever it is released!? anyone have a date???), so what should i go for that will be forward compatible?  I like the gyro support that is demonstrated in the videos on MCE but dont want to spend $130~ on hardware that is going to be a nightmare to get working in the stable multi hardware supporting 810 version of MCE.
