Thanks for the clarification Andrew.  Did you happen to catch my request for additional measurements of the board?  I'd like to know if it's realistic to squeeze the mini-itx board into a 2in x 7in x 6 7/8 in cash box.  The only thing I'm concerned about is the height of the heat-sink.

Probably not - why do you want more CPU grunt?

If you are thinking HD video then don't.... the 330 is not going to give you what you need for decent HD video playback through software decoding... you need much more grunt than that (I'm talking about H264, or high bit rate streams at 1080) you will need the VDPAU integration and that is a little way off yet. The OpenGL performance of this GPU is easily enough for UI2 masking right up to 1080p, so no issue there...

The way I'm interpreting your statement:
ION currently does fine for ATSC 1080i TV broadcasts + UI2
ION currently does fine for DVD playback.
ION should do fine with H264 once VDPAU is integrated later in 8.10
Second Atom core will not be used for anything since all video decoding is in hardware.

This is sort of a double post since there are a few threads on the same Atom/Ion topics.

I'm looking to get one of the Zotac boards.  I started researching these little guys a few days ago.  I'm certainly excited about them.  The Atom 230s are available here now.  Andrew/Colin/Anyone Else, Do you guys think it's worth waiting/paying for the 330s?

Also, an odd question but how high is the board including the exposed part of the mounting screws and ram?  It looks like the heatsink is nearly as high as the IO panel but not quite there.  I'm thinking of squeezing one into one of these http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0013FGYTC/.

My current reqs are only 720p/1080i ATSC broadcasts but I'd like room to move into bluray in the future.

Thanks!

Chris

So the real reason I wasn't using VDR is that my card is ATSC which is only supported with a patch to VDR.  Are there plans to offer the patched version?

I went back to mythtv and got it working at the core.  It looks like the issue within myth was the playback profile.  If I use slim or normal, I get playback, otherwise, I get a blank screen.  Of course, I still don't know if there is anything I need to do for MCE or just myth.

Afterward, I enabled diskless MDs and did a PXE boot.  I noticed that the image starts myth-backend.  Also, I am unable to get streamed TV from the core.  Is this normal behavior and/or do I need to modify the image?

if this is a dvb card, why don't you use VDR?

-Thom

The one and only answer to that is that I have no idea how to use it.  I take it there are advantages to the usage of it?  From what I read, I could see no compelling reason to use VDR.  Is the MCE integration better?  I gave it half of a shot on one install and got nothing out of it.  I figured I would have better luck with myth since I already knew how to use it.

If I do use VDR, how do I make MCE happy with the unsupported card?

Thanks for your help,

Chris

A mild change from my previous statement.... if I use /dev/dvb/adapter0/dvr0 mplayer just takes it.  If I do the same with VLC, it says that it is loading libdvdcss.

Thanks for the info Thom.  Assuming that pans out when I try it tonight, what would be the correct procedure?  What would be the procedure otherwise?

It is an ATSC device so the answer has to be yes.  Correct?  It does have mpeg 2/4 encoders.  Is there a program I can use to definitively test it if you can't answer from the info I have already given?

All,

I'm looking for the correct way to add a new capture card.  I have an HVR 2250 dual tuner capture card.  The driver was just released and I have it working fine on a vanilla mythbuntu install.  I've been told that I need to create a new device template for it to function within LinuxMCE but I'm not sure what the template options need to be.  Is it necessary to write a wrapper for V4L devices?

I tried setting up the card in mythtv directly but when I click on the watch tv button in mce, I get a black screen.

Thanks for your help,

Chris

Installation issues / Re: 8.10 Hybrid Core
« on: May 11, 2009, 06:32:41 pm »
So I've done a fresh install based on 2009/05/11 updates.  After orbiter gen, a note comes up saying that the orbiter is unable to register with the router.  From the time I was able to spend in front of it, the router never did respond to the orbiter.  The router process is up.  Does anyone have any suggestions on things I should look at before opening a bug report?

hi castlec,

You might want to double check via webadmin Media Director > software modules (edit) to make sure cd/dvd is checked.

Another thing is you can't play encryted DVD's without libdvdcss2 installed.

I've got the latest alpha 2 updates and no KDE as well.

I thought it should...2.15

KDE on the MD should work not. The first boot of the system after the update will take a bit longer, as stuff that has not worked, is now being executed for the first time.

...I thought this was meant to say should work now but maybe it really means should not work.

I haven't gotten back to isolating the CD/DVD issue.  I'm thinking it's a legitimate bug.  I had a CD in at boot and when the system came up, it wouldn't let me play it when I clicked the play button.  It said something along the lines of the media not being supported.  Ejecting the disk and reinserting caused it to send an event to the router and then it worked.  After installing libdvdcss DVDs worked as well.  So I need to go back and check the behavior of the system when a disk has been in the drive at boot.  According to the documentation, clicking play should send a media inserted event to the router.

On the kde note, my system does have kde running in the background.  It starts up and is visible before the Orbiter takes over.  When I click on the kde button in the Orbiter, it just locks up.  I have to kill the Orbiter.  It may be a vestige of the previous install.  I'll be doing a clean one this weekend and will report back.

I'm up and running.  Two issues remain.
  • Dropping to kde fails.  The Orbiter continues to display images but otherwise locks up.
  • I'm unable to access media on my DVD/CD drive

Any thoughts others have would be appreciated.

It appears as though running installer 5 on top of installer 4 has been successful.  The config wizard has started up.  Thanks for letting me know about the new installer.  I'll post back to let everyone know how it goes.
