Users / New generation samsung tvs and linux
« on: June 22, 2009, 03:51:39 pm »
ok.. this is going to be a challenge for linux gurus out there....

i have been doing some search (if not research) on internet out there about new generation Samsung televisions.. The new LED and LCD tvs have powerful ARM processors, RJ45 connections or wifi usb connections with some builtin flash memory for os.. and found some confirmation(from the user manuals) that these TVs use Linux, busybox and binutils under GPL and Glibc libusb and SDL under LGPL and libssl under its own..

after some more search found some speculations that it uses STLinux or uClinux and few people said samsung has its own uClinux for ARM.. so did some search on these and found the following links:

1. Source code for some of the TVs can be downloaded here:  http://www.samsung.com/global/opensource/
2. Samsungs own version or ARM uClinux here: http://opensrc.sec.samsung.com/
3. STLinux here: http://www.stlinux.com/
4. Also extract from the manual: "This product uses some software programs which are distributed under the GPL/LGPL license. Accordingly, the following GPL and LGPL software source codes that have been used in this product can be provided after asking to vdswmanager@samsung.com"

now the question is, with the capabilities that tv is already geared to do.. can some gurus make a MCE version of linux for these TVs so that we can forget the media directors all together?

I know, I can do it, if i were only a linux guru :( I know its not an easy task.. but atleast.. I would try.. :)

« on: April 16, 2009, 04:40:07 pm »
Anybody got a chance to look inside this box? From the specifications it looks like this box runs uCLinux, and got a sigmatel chipset and impressively got HomePlug built-in, and HDMI can do upto 1080i in a very small box.. ;)

probably some gurus can shed some light to be able to use this as a MD..

Users / Opera CAS-214 case
« on: April 16, 2009, 10:50:47 am »
All, as some of you know I have just started my LMCE project.. and the first few parts came in.. one of them is Opera CAS-214 multimedia case with 500w psu..

one wierd thing about this unit is the placement of 5.25" bays and the method to fit the drives in there.. the problem I hit with fitting LG's DVD drive is that it wont fit with the two plastic holders of the bay.. i could fit the 160GB primary harddrive with 5.25" adapater into one of the bays.. but struggling to fit DVD drive.. and there is no manual either.. :(

if anybody has this one.. could you please help me..

Users / Power failure or PSTN failure
« on: April 15, 2009, 11:18:58 am »
All, one main important ingredient for a security system is to function when there is a power failure (deliberately or naturally) and communicate that info using PSTN line or GSM line..

Anybody did any permutations as to what happens or what should happen when power and pstn line has been cut deliberately or by a natural disaster..

any help appreciated..

Users / Tricklestar USB or Seluxit viaSens 100
« on: April 09, 2009, 04:35:47 pm »
All,

I have almost ordered components for my new LMCE core.. now to security and Lighting module..

problem is that i cant buy z-wave stuff from US because they use different freq.. and confusion is that there aren't many products in the europe.. so to start my confusion with, which of the USB adapters should i buy.. Tricklestar or seluxit.. what is the range on those.. my core will be sitting in the corner of 1st floor or 3 storied home.. ofcourse there will be few repeaters but i need to know which one will perform better thru walls etc...

also anybody know if HomeSeer multi sensors are available for and in UK/Europe?

cheers
