Installation issues / Re: Shuttle X50 V2 Kernel Panic
« on: April 29, 2010, 07:14:39 am »
Sounds like the NIC is not recognized by that kernel.  You can get around it easily by buying a supported intel nic, I use both old intel 100mb and  newer 1Gb nic's depending on the MD.  Also if there is onboard NIC's, make sure they are disabled.

PXE Boot drivers are loaded onto a ROM on the motherboard or the NIC card and independent of the linux kernel.  When you say recognized by the dcerouter, the linux kernel has not loaded yet, that is the PXE boot ROM getting a DHCP address and boot logic from DCErouter.

Did you check the ubuntu hardware compatibility page to see if that Jmicron controller is supported ?

Installation issues / Re: Orbiter cannot register with router.

There should be several things running so your there is something wrong with your installation.

You will need to look at a bunch of logs. These commands will list last modified at the bottom of the list.
# ls -latr /var/log
# ls -latr /var/log/pluto

Start with the /var/log/pluto/pluto.log
Check the installation logs too.

Users / Re: How can I use the wi-fi card as a second NIC?
« on: April 25, 2010, 05:27:34 pm »
You should NOT use a wifi card as a nic on a MD, nor a core, since PXE booting is required.  You can use an hardware only access point, that talks to another hardware access point where there are configured as a bridge. If the access point are in the 2.4 Ghz range, then there will be lots of interference and your experience may not be great.  MD losing connection to the core. Many linksys/netgear routers and the like have a bridge AP (access point) function that should work as well.  Some of the newer draft N have multiple antennas and work in the 5 Ghz range so they might work better.
Note that adding wireless to your network can greatly compromise the security even with MAC filtering and WPA2.

If you do decide to go the wireless route, report back with your experience.

Are you running a pure core or hybrid ?

Did you run Diskless_CreateTBZ.sh ?

Check the /var/log/xorg.* logs ?

The issue maybe upstream from your orbiter.

Do you see the DCErouter running ?
#ps auxw | grep -i route

Check resolv.conf and hosts file.

Installation issues / Xine, x264, VC1 (mkv), and VDPAU
« on: April 24, 2010, 07:59:39 pm »
I have xine with x264,VC1 (mkv) support via VDPAU working on the command line.   I can launch with 'DISPLAY=:0 xine -V vdpau -fg --no-logo filename' and it works on the MD.  The MD is set to use VDPAU/auto.   However when I try to launch it with the orbiter it fails with: (xine player log below).    How do I check what the orbiter is using to call xine ?

Installation issues / Re: Help with 810 b
« on: April 20, 2010, 05:02:42 pm »
I remember seeing that its better to do a straight kubuntu 8.1 (i386) install, then run the web install scripts.

This at least gives a chance to test drivers and get the latest kernel.

Installation issues / Re: Diskless MD - Xine not playing - Any advice?

your sound drivers maybe not be installed properly.

# cat /var/log/dmesg | grep -iE 'snd|audio|sound|hda'
# lsmod | grep snd

Check out the ALSA instructions on how to install and compile the source.

Example for Intel HDA onboard chipsets.

Did you try ?

#sudo apt-get update
#sudo apt-get upgrade

What is installed, reply with the output ?

# sudo dkms status
# sudo uname -r
# sudo netstat -nr
# sudo dpkg -l \*nvidia\*

You may have to look at several logs, this will list by last modified time.
# ls -latr /var/log
# ls -latr /var/log/pluto

Are you booting off the DVD or you trying to install within an existing kubuntu 8.10 installation ?

Do you want to keep anything currently on the hard drive ?

Installation issues / Re: Failing Nvidia Drivers
« on: April 20, 2010, 03:06:56 pm »
dkms status reports the driver being loaded.

which kernel is being loaded ?
# sudo uname -r

try this
# sudo apt-get install  nvidia-195-modaliases nvidia-195-kernel-source
stop X
# /usr/pluto/bin/Stop_X.sh

Then run the nvidia driver installer again
# sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-195.36.15-pkg1.run

reboot or  try to run the AVWizard again
# /usr/pluto/bin/AVWizard_Run.sh

What do the logs say ?  see /var/log/xorg.*

Installation issues / Re: MD Setup NVIDIA Driver Issues
« on: April 19, 2010, 04:28:33 am »
I had the same issue, and I still do, that my MD's can't access the internet through the core. The core can access the internet just fine, and IP forwarding is enabled.
I think the reason is doesn't work for me anyway, is that the core router is not doing NAT translation, so the next hop router sees 192.168. in the source address, and it's getting dropped.  If this is true, then this is not very secure and upstream networks and hosts can see actual addresses on the private 192.168.80 network.

 Anyways,
Since the MD can't find the internet, the automatic update process is not working, and that's the endless rebooting.
The files on the MD can be edited directly in /usr/pluto/diskless/XX where XX is the MD you want to edit.  Careful they can be overwritten by templates.
I am able to update the MD with apt-get by putting a file called proxy02 in /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/02proxy in both the core and MD. See instructions on another thread.

You may also want to enable SSH on the media director.

To get around the automatic updates, I commented out the lines containing "confirmDependencies" in /usr/pluto/bin/Config_Device_Changes.sh
Then I copied all the files I needed from the core, video drivers, packages, etc.

I update the MD manually with apt-get.

EDIT:
I added a static route on my router.
# sudo route add -net 192.168.80.0/24 <external IP of dcerouter>
And this worked, a terrible solution but it does get my MD internet access since NAT translation is implemented on the core.

If anyone having this problem and is using a linksys/netgear, then hopefully it will allow static routes to be added.

#  Find the version of installed modules, then run
  sudo dpkg -l \*pluto\*

One may have to add sources to /etc/apt/sources.list to access the latest beta updates.

This is why two nic's are recommended.  Applications are having diffculty talking to the core router.  One could check the default routes and disable the firewall.  Check the logs in /var/log and /var/log/pluto.  You can get to a console with CTRL-ALT-F2.  Also check your video drivers.

 # run these commands at your own risk, I provide no warranty or accuracy of the information.
 # These are the steps I use to grow a software RAID only, note: hardware instructions are quite different.

 # stop all services using /dev/md0, you can use  lsof  or fuser, this could break major components
 service samba stop
 Umount /dev/md0

 # make sure drive is 100% clean before starting to grow.
 mdadm --detail /dev/md0
 fsck /dev/md0

 # setup the new drive partition
 fdisk /dev/sdX
 mdadm --add /dev/md0 /dev/sdX
 # make sure to use the total number of RAID drives including the new drive
 mdadm --grow /dev/md0 --raid-devices=4
 watch cat /proc/mdstat

 # check the drive
 fsck /dev/md0
 resize2fs /dev/md0

 # the drive should be assembled, but if not
 mdadm --assemble --scan /dev/md0

 # check for 'clean' state and active for each drive.
 mdadm --detail /dev/md0

 # make logical volume active to OS
 vgchange -ay
 vgscan

 # mount drive and start services, it maybe better to reboot.
 mount /dev/md0
 server samba start

 # also helps to make a copy of /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf

This should be in the feature request section, afaik they are planning a rewrite of the orbiter UI for build 1008.
