Users / 710 install on M3N78-EM
« on: May 21, 2009, 04:00:20 pm »
My onboard NIC is not supported under 710 without a kernel upgrade. What is the best/easiest way to install:

a) Install 2 PCI NIC, upgrade kernel, remove 1 PCI NIC
b) Install 1 PCI NIC, configure single NIC setup, upgrade kernel, switch to double NIC setup.

If a), what manual configuration is necessary following removing the PCI NIC?

I'm planning on giving 0810 a try in a few weeks but I don't have time at the moment to fiddle with an alpha release. My gf is patiently waiting for the mess of "computer guts" in the living room to get cleaned up :P

Thanks,

Dave

Users / 0 Replies Suggestion/Request
« on: April 15, 2009, 07:26:23 pm »
Is there any chance we could have someone (with adequate linuxmce experience, I'd volunteer but I'm new) in the forum who on a regular basis could go through past posts that have 0 replies and give _some sort_ of useful reply? Even if it's merely "Read the f*cking FAQ" or "You don't make any sense, please clarify". There are times when such 0 reply posts are encountered during forum searches where the answers to such questions are of interest - there seems to be little point in re-posting the question since it wasn't answered the first time.

Some of my own posts have not been answered and they are questions posted following reasonable amounts of research. The lack of response is confusing (Did I miss something in the FAQ or Wiki? Does no one know the answer? Did I search through the forum using poor search terms? Should I keep looking or am I wasting my time? Am I trying to do something with linuxmce that it can't do?)

I think linuxmce would be much more accessible to less advanced users if this was done - I realize no one has the time as everyone is busy making linuxmce even more amazing than it already is.

I'm not trying to be whiny or demanding as I'm grateful for the many hours that have been donated to this project to date. I just thought it would be a good thing from an accessibility standpoint.

Users / UI2 MD control (newb)
« on: April 09, 2009, 02:19:36 am »
Still waiting for my Fiire remote to arrive, until then I'm stuck learning with my keyboard + mouse. I've finished (hopefully) messing around with hardware and reinstalling the system. Here's what I'm finding from a user interface POV:

1)I've noticed that if I begin watching a movie I can press F2 and I am returned to the video list where it last was, with all the filters I had set.

If during the movie I adjust the volume or jog forward or back and THEN press F2, I do not return to the video list. Instead I get the most recently used control (volume or shuttle, except the graphics are messed up because the control is a black strip). I then have to press F1 and navigate back to  the video list, after which the filters are all reset. Is this normal behaviour? If yes, is there a function to return to the video list as it last was regardless of having previously adjusted the volume or position?

2) If I select a video from the video list and then select "MOVE", nothing happens.

3) If I create a bookmark, and then try to delete it via the video list, it will not delete. I must play the bookmark, then press F1, then go to bookmarks in this file, and then delete the bookmark.

Users / Matrix-Style Attribute Editor
« on: April 05, 2009, 02:51:46 am »
Linuxmce finds the embedded id3 attribute data for my mp3s (managed via iTunes) fine.

I have a huge number of video files (home videos, downloaded adult entertainment, etc) in formats that have no embedded tagging system and can not be identified via internet lookup. I have begun adding attributes via the web admin but it is going to take me too long since the UI isn't very efficient for this kind of data entry. Is there a tool that allows me to either modify the mysql database itself or .id3 tag files using a matrix-style UI (like iTunes)? I read in one post that the .id3 files were proprietary so I'm guessing the answer is no.

If no, are there plans for such a thing?

Users / Remote: what to buy
« on: March 30, 2009, 09:06:42 pm »
From my preliminary (mouse+keyboard) tinkering with linuxmce, I love it. However, the remote is a make-or-break aspect of the system.

I understand Fiire is bankrupt, but that there are efforts to bring a replacement remote to market. Am I best to try to find a used Fiire remote, or wait for this alleged replacement? If I wait, are we talking weeks, months, years?

I really want an accelerometer-based or motion-tracking type remote, not a classic button-push-only type.

Users / Auto-detection of .avi and .rm
« on: March 25, 2009, 06:08:08 pm »
If I place a .wmv or .mp4 in the /home/public/data/videos directory they appear instantly in the videos list within the orbiter on my hybrid.

If I place an .avi or .rm file in this directory they do not appear and I must add them manually through the admin page. Is this a bug?

Users / NVIDIA TV-out s-video composite cable
« on: March 25, 2009, 05:46:37 pm »
I have an 8500GT which has a 7-pin "S-video" connector which apparently (http://ca.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=2&l2=6&l3=515&l4=0&model=1644&modelmenu=2) supports composite output "via S-Video to Composite"

The supplied cable is 7-pin "S-video" to 3xRCA component "HDTV out" cable.

What is the simplest way to connect to my old CRT TV which has composite and s-video inputs but no component?

Can I purchase any 4 or 7 pin S-Video to Composite adapter cable and expect it to work, or do I need to be weary of pin-outs?

And whatever I do, is there anything within linuxmce that needs to be done other than the obvious AVWizard settings?

Installation issues / Timezone.plutohome.com
« on: March 23, 2009, 03:32:50 pm »
I've reinstalled linuxmce a number of times in the past two weeks and it consistently fails to contact timezone.plutohome.com during initial setup. The result (I think) is that my computer clock gets set incorrectly. Is this site down? I can't ping it.

I have the linuxmce machine directly connected to my cable modem with no hardware firewall or router inbetween.

Users / Tearing experiences
« on: March 23, 2009, 03:24:15 pm »
I'd like to share my experiences with tearing incase anyone has any suggestions for fixes or the devs can use the info. I am runing the latest 710 release 32bit DVD install.

In general the tearing I experience occurs only in scenes with fast camera movement. It looks like the top half of the display is on one frame and the bottom half is on the previous frame. The severity of tearing does not change if I switch between UI modes. The severity of tearing does not change if I use my 15" Samsung LCD through the VGA port @ 1024x768, or my Panasonic Plamsa through DVI-->HDMI @ 1080p.

I am using this HD material for testing: http://www.digital-digest.com/articles/highdefdvd_test_page1.html Also some of the WMV HD Content Showcase material

I started out with these system specs:

ASUS M2R32-MVP
AMD 64 x2 3800+
2 GB Corsair RAM
ASUS 8500GT

I found no difference between the stock NVIDIA drivers and the latest (installed following the guide on the wiki). No difference between with and without the NVIDIA card tweaks from the Wiki.

Finally, I read that HD decoding requires a good bit of CPU horsepower since hardware acceleration is not yet supported. I upgraded my CPU to an AMD 64 x2 5400+ and overclocked to 3.11GHz but no discernable difference resulted.

UPDATE: The tearing occurs within Kaffeine as well, so the issue doesn't appear specific to linuxmce

I'm at a loss for things to try.

Note that my testing is based on qualitative observations. I don't know how to run a frame counter in linux.

Thanks in advance,

Dave
