Users / Can I upgrade to Python 2.6?

I have run across two extra software packages in the last month that I would like to install that would require me to have version 2.6 of Python.  I was wondering if I upgrade if I would break anything that relies specifically on version 2.5 of Python?

I think I solved the problem, The first problem I had was that I was searching for "done with adding new device" which is not what the alert said. So I watched it a few more times and realized exactly what it said "Done with new device added". 

I then found a couple of postings that helped me out. This posting has the explanation from the man himself Thom http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=7030.0 with a link to a fix on that page.

The fix is to adjust the orbiter's "Alert Level" on the LinuxMCE admin site but I could not find it at first and then I clicked the "Advanced" option and found the setting near the bottom and changed it from "all" to "important" so I hope this works.

Users / [SOLVED] "Done with new device added" keeps popping up

I added a new internal hard drive and everything went fine and is recognized just fine and the the media that's on it works just fine.

I have rebooted twice and I still get the message in the blue box in the left hand corner popping up every hour or so for the last week saying; "xxxxx:Done with new device added: Movies".

I searched the forums and only found this posting with a dead link; http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=2620.0

How can I remedy this?

FYI I also have a PVR350 installed that is auto recognized as a WinTV-PVR150 with S-video and Composite inputs so when I run this command:

All I get is one set of S-Video and Composite inputs that I think are the PVR350's inputs not the AverMedia A180's input.  Based on a quote that I read:

Although the card includes S-video and composite inputs (including RCA audio jacks), these inputs don't appear to work in Linux, so you can't use the card for analog recording, even from a set-top box, VCR, or other device. However, it does tune analog channels within its frequency range. It is important to note though that the analog tuner of this card does not have a hardware MPEG2 encoder; it is an old fashioned frame grabber based tuner. Therefore, it is highly discouraged for analog use.

I guess based on the quote I would not expect the A/V inputs to show up. These are the two commands listed on the first entry if there is another one you would like me to run just let me know.

I have info for an AverMedia, AVerTV HD A180 (AVerTV HD MCE A180), more info on this card at MythTV's website http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/AVerTV_HD_A180

Two informational quotes from MythTV's website

AVerTV HD A180 is an HDTV tuner for OTA (ATSC) or unencrypted digital cable (QAM) signals

and

I think this is a great card with a great picture, I have had it in operation for a little over 2 years now. First year in just a stand alone myth system and last year in a LinuxMCE 710 system and now I just recently upgraded to 810 and it manually installs fine. I have compared the picture side by side with Myth's "PBP" (picture by pictue) feature against a HDHomeRun both in full 1080p and in my opinion it has just as good of a picture and I can't tell the two apart. My comparison test has only been for OTA HD (ATSC 8VSB).

The only thing I had to do was download the firmware and copy it into the /lib/firmware directory and rebooted and it worked.

One final note, the script to download the firmware is broke but here is a note from http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Kworld_ATSC_110 and also http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/ATI_HDTV_Wonder

NOTE: Running the perl download script causes wget to exit with a 404 error. This is caused because aver.com updated their domain to "www.avermedia-usa.com". To fix this you must edit 'get_dvb_firmware' at line 320 after the gzip -d command. Replace 'www.aver.com' with 'avermedia-usa.com' and it should download properly

Both the Kworld and ATI Myth sites are very helpful because the A180 site seems to be a little outdated.

It has been a little over a year since I posted this and I didn't want to be a pest because I knew you guys were working hard on the 810 release.  I have recently upgraded to the 810 release and I still have the exact same problem as before.

I have just updated to LinuxMCE 810, (I was previously running 710 for a little over a year) and I have a collection of movies on a network share that I added back to LinuxMCE but most of the movies I have already watched. when I was adding the IMDB metadata I was looking for an attribute that I could set for the movies that I have already watched but I could not find one, although I know the system keeps track of it some where.

I guess I have just one more question more or less for clarification. After I install Kubuntu I will then need to install MySQL before LinuxMCE, restore the database and then install LinuxMCE, correct?? The main question is; will the MySQL that I install from the Kubuntu repositories be the same one (version) that LinuxMCE would pull in or require. I know things have greatly improved but I remember that 710 was unable stay up to date with the repos but I don't think this is the case anymore. I also know that sometimes it is a MythTV requirement to have a certain version.

That's good news!! Prior to LinuxMCE I have run (and still do) a MythTV install on a Gentoo system for 4 years+, so I have had to manually work with and configure mysql before so no problem there. I found two wiki entries on the MythTV site that should work; http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Backup_your_database and http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Database_Backup_and_Restore This should be all the info I need unless you guys think of something else just let me know because I will be upgrading soon.

Users / Can I upgrade without reconfiguring my RAID 5

I currently have a LinuxMCE 710 setup with six hard drives; four of which are in a RAID 5 array for MythTV storage,  one with LinuxMCE 710 on it and another drive that is blank for this intended upgrade.  The question is, does the new install of LinuxMCE 810 need to recreate the array or is it possible somehow to just read the original as it is and keep the 4 hard drive RAID 5 array intact with the data still on it.  I realize I would still have to do a MythTV MySQL database backup on the 710 and then a restore on the 810. Yes I suppose I could google around for an answer but I built the array through the Pluto-Admin RAID configuration page and I don't know how it is tied into LinuxMCE.

Users / Crystalfontz vfd/lcd, how do I install it??

From what I have been able to find on the wiki and the forums it seems that Crystalfonts vfd/lcd are supported by LinuxMCE but I can't find a howto for installing it.  The closest thing I could find is the howto for the MSI Media Live Barebone under hardware in the wiki.  I was able to follow that to the point of having to enter something in the 'command line' field of the device template and yes I did use the 'Crystal Fontz USB/RS232 #1722' device template.  

Just a little FYI, before I added the device template I plugged the vfd in with usb and it was not recognized and also rebooted and it still was not recognized so then I followed the MSI lcd wiki to the point of the 'command line' then saved template settings and rebooted and nothing on the vfd sceen besides the flashing cursor. I noticed when the launch manager was starting things it hung a while on the Crystal Fontz device. I then checked the launch manager log file and this is what I found,

Not starting device 61 Crystal Fontz USB/RS232 - binary is not found, probably it is in the middle of installation

I then thought maybe the binary that was not found was supported by the lcdproc package so I installed that then restarted but made no difference so now I stuck.

OK looks like I have to bump this a bit

I will ask two, (more specific) short answers questions so that I will know if this is worth trying to figure out.

#1 I know that rs-232 is a bi-directional means of communication between a receiver and LMCE, but does it or can it send more information (like what's being displayed on the receiver's vfd) to LMCE than just an acknowledge of the received command from LMCE and it's current status.  being I don't have a receiver with rs-232 (I will buy one and work on this if it's possible) I need someone that does to enlighten me.

#2 If the first question is possible then is their a device template capable of displaying this info on a lcd/vfd screen or is it possible to make one?

If any of this is possible it would also be cool for the information to be overlaid on a MD for a short peirod of time after the receiver has changed a setting.
This would be a great option for a room like a shop, garage, or a kitchen when you just want audio and don't want to have the expense of buying a MD, monitor, and a remote just for listening to audio.
