Nicely done and definitely useful: now we can make our own cradles with HEAVY bases!  ;D

You can ssh as root into the MD without a password.

Code: [Select]
sudo ssh moon#
will get you to a shell

You are correct - the MD and core will operate with different kernels.

rocketlynx -

This worked on my M3N78-VM MD's (same ethernet chipset):

All steps performed on the MD itself

1. Boot using the pci nic.
2. Upgrade your kernel to 2.6.28 or later following the wiki instructions. Make sure to build Realtek PHY support into the kernel (Device Drivers->Network Device Support->PHY Device support and infrastructure->Drivers for Realtek PHYs). I put it directly in the kernel, not as a module.
3. Update vmlinuz and initrd.img symlinks per the wiki instructions for kernel upgrades on MD's.
4. Shutdown and remove pci nic.
5. Reboot using NVIDIA workaround with driver 180.29

Unfortunately, rebuilding the kernel on the core and copying it to the diskless image archive won't work because you need the kernel sources for whatever new kernel you build in order to use the NVIDIA workaround.

Hope this helps,
Matt

Yeah, I definitely misread shaz's posts. That's what 3am forum use does for me  ;D

It is definitely possible to use an external router, just use it in *addition* to LinuxMCE's standard config, not instead of.

For example, I use a pfSense router with eth0 connected to my cable modem and eth1 connected to the core. So instead of eth0 on the core having an ip address assigned by the cable modem, it uses the 192.168.1.* subnet. The second nic in the core (eth1) connects to my switch and provides everything in the house with a 192.168.80.* address.

Cable Modem -> pfSense (eth0) - ip address assigned by internet provider
pfSense (eth1) -> core (eth0) - ip address assigned by pfSense
core (eth1) -> switch and whatever else is connected - ip addresses assigned by the core

Just remember that any port forwarding/NAT needs to be done on BOTH routers.

If I'm not mistaken, totallymaxed has used similar setups for many of his installs.

That being said, adding an extra layer to the network sort of defeats the purpose of simplicity in lmce. I only use the pfSense router because I get paranoid - not because I think it actually makes the system perform any better.

Users / Re: LiveTV from Motorola PVR: input switching / DCE commands
« on: April 23, 2009, 11:53:48 pm »
I still want to be able to turn the tv on and off, so I used a different hack, for which I'm sure Thom will flog me: I added a button to the orbiter that sends a power toggle ir code straight to the UIRT without letting the media plug-in know.

Until I can figure out why the media plug-in is sending extra commands, that'll have to do  :-\

Users / LiveTV from Motorola PVR: input switching / DCE commands
« on: April 23, 2009, 12:27:50 pm »
The MD connects to my TV on HDMI.
The Motorola DCT3416 PVR connects to my TV on Component.

If I select LiveTV from the webpad when the TV is already on, everything works great. When the TV is off, the media plug in sends all the right commands to turn it on, switch the input etc. but then sends an extra Input Select (HDMI) command. All commands are sent via a USB UIRT and all ir codes are discrete.

Is there a way to change what DCE commands get sent based on the state parameter of the TV?

EDIT: OR... Is it possible to hard-code the state of the TV to always show as ON?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Just passing on Thom's specific advice to me after LOTS of IR problems:

Use the 286M emitters; they work perfectly with the UIRT.

I'm having the same problem on the latest 0810 build with the MCV Z-Wave dongle and the UIRT. If I add the MCV dongle manually in the webadmin it works fine, but I'm stuck on the UIRT for now. I'm reinstalling 0810 for the third time tonight and if it still doesn't work I'll post some the syslog.

some laptops and eeebox b202 have the spdif integrated in the 3,5mm audio jack

Your correct. All the Eee Box's (B202, B204, B206) ship with an spdif adapter that cleverly adapts the stereo output jack on the back to optical out. The jack socket has the Laser emitter assembly built into it and the adapter provides a light-pipe to a standard optical socket.

Andrew

That certainly is clever. Now the only question is, how long will we have to wait for this gift from above? I read somewhere about a  "back-to-school" release time frame for the US.

At first I was really excited about this unit - but no built in s/pdif out? That's another $130 or so for a usb solution. On second thought, I'm still pumped simply due to the sff... and the price!

Well done gentlemen! I have a Vista 4140XMP and will be ordering the VistaICM shortly so will be able to help with any further testing. The best price I've found so far is about $250 - is that about right or is there a preferred vendor?

As an afterthought, does anyone forsee any issues with using a wireless bridge to connect the ICM to the network? I would *really* like to avoid having to run a cable from the second floor to the basement...

lmce3000,

I think you might want to read http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Developers_Guide; it is an excellent introduction to the underlying technical aspects of LMCE. Sections 2 and 3 should specifically help with your research.

We're about at the same point; right now I'm fleshing out UI choices before going crazy with Interface Builder. I'll send you something more substantial when I have it. Since CocoaTouch can compile C, C++, and Obj-C interchangeably I think it will really just be a matter of creating a new UI and mapping the buttons to existing functions.
