Is it a DVD-R or RW?  None of my drives boot DVD-RW discs, I have to use -R discs to boot from them.  Just a thought. 

You could try swapping the DVD drives and see if it'll boot in the machine then.

1. Your netgear may not have an internal IP address on the LMCE network.  You may have to assign it an IP on the LMCE subnet and tell LMCE to not use that address in the network config.  Make sure you are not plugged into the WAN connection on the router at all.  All of your ethernet cabling should be connect to the LAN ports on the router/AP.  Ensure that you leave DHCP turned off on the netgear so that LMCE can provide that functionality.

2. You must enter the SSID of the network AP you are trying to connect to, this goes in the ESSID box of the tabletcfg screen, without this the webdt will not know which wireless network to connect to.  The key can be left blank if you do not have WEP enabled (I don't... and I don't really see the point).  The SSID is the same as the SSID you assigned to the wireless of the router/AP.

3. No additional prep is required on the core, the webpad will register itself with the core and create a new orbiter and configure itself automatically based on questions it will ask you on the webdt screen the first time it connects to the core.

LMCE updates are not relased on any schedule but usually every week or two there are some updated packages.  Usually if your system is working well there is no need to do an upgrade.  But there may be bugfixes or new features which affect your system (or your enjoyment of it) that you wish to take advantage of.

When you do a package upgrade you should do it on the core first and then on each or your media directors.  If you do not upgrade each of your MDs some functionality can break.  (MythTV is an example.)

So..  In most situations you want to do the following:

On your core:
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade

Then on each MD (after you've completed the core upgrade)
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade

Sometimes performing an 'apt-get dist-upgrade' is required to install new packages (like new kernels when they are available) but this is rare and you will know when it may affect you because 'apt-get upgrade' will tell you that 'The following packages have been held back'... or something similar.  This is telling you that there are packages that will not be changed with 'apt-get upgrade' and that performing an 'apt-get dist-upgrade' would likely install the new packages.  This can sometimes cause problems so be careful if you do.  Backups can be very handy.

if you do apt-get upgrade you will upgrade to kubuntu 9.10

apt-get upgrade will NOT upgrade to 9.10.

apt-get update will update the list of packages from all repositories
apt-get upgrade will upgrade any existing installed packages.
apt-get dist-upgrade will upgrade any existing packages and install any new required packages.

Under normal circumstances you should perform apt-get update and apt-get upgrade.  Performing an apt-get dist-upgrade can *sometimes* install packages which will conflict with LMCE and cause things to break.  There are completely seperate commands used to upgrade to 9.10.

thanks a lot, but I would like to use ui2 anyway so it would not be worth the effort...maybe it's an option if nobody comes up with a solution for ui2.
the thing which I don't understand is, why did it work so well in 7.10 and now it doesn't.

I consider you lucky if you've ever had UI2 working on Intel graphics in 0710 or 0810.  Every time I have tried under 0710 or the 0810 alphas I would always get a garbled screen.  Totallymaxed had suggested forcing the video ram to 128mb in BIOS to cure the garbled video problem, there is no option in my EeeBox B202 BIOS for this and xorg is reporting 256mb videoram in it's logs.  Somewhere in the late alpha stage UI2 starting causing orbiter to actually crash. 

The Intel driver from 0910 or 1004 work great with UI2.  I would love to find a way to get it to work in 0810 but I havn't had any success.  Hmmm, CVT has ported and compiled orbiter on 0910, I wonder if xorg could be upgraded on an 0810 system and the compiled orbiter binaries dropped in to maintain input functionality....  This is not elegant but *could* work, assuming it doesn't break anything else...

ui1 is running for some minutes but then suddenly the screen turns black and thats it.

Have you tried updating the EeeBox BIOS?  I had this problem but it went away for me when I updated the EeeBox B202 BIOS to the latest version.

Anyone ever get this working? I recently installed Beta2 and am also having the CIFS VFS error (after the initial Video and Audio wizard and the start of the orbiter generation).

Changing the xorg didn't seem to help. Did the intel driver work for anyone? Anything else to suggest?

There is a problem with the 0810 Intel graphics driver which causes OrbiterGL (UI2) to crash.  Newer Intel graphics drivers solve the issue but require an upgrade of ubuntu to 0910 or newer (the 1004 drivers work great) so this will not be an issue in LinuxMCE 1004 (the next planned version).  I have tried lots of different things with xorg.conf with no success.  It is *possible* to upgrade xorg to use a newer version of the Intel driver but all input functionality is killed when you do this so I do not recommend it.

I don't want to hijack Jimbodude's thread so if we want to continue upnp configuration discussion we can open a new thread but...  I havn't used upnp within lmce yet (I've looked briefly) however I have successfully watched mythtv dvb recordings on my ps3 through the built-in mythtv upnp server and using mediatomb on a standalone NAS.  I don't believe you can watch 'Live' tv through upnp.  If you are in Europe you could look into PlayTV which is a dual-dvb tuner add-on for PS3, not available in NA and it doesn't support ATSC so it wouldn't work in NA, and it's not lmce integrated.  MediaTomb requires configuration to ensure proper on-the-fly-re-encode of many file formats to be compatible with ps3.

Sony has dropped OtherOS support in newer consoles and many developers have walked away from Linux development on PS3.  Personally I'm dissappointed but I don't think we'll see much development or support for Linux on PS3 any more.  PS3 Slim consoles do not support OtherOS anymore so no new PS3s will run linux.  From a resource standpoint it would be much more usefull for LMCE going forward to concentrate on supporting other hardware than the PS3. 

That being said...  I'm still interested in being able to control it from the XMB.

I've tried just about everything.  UI2 boots with your xorg.conf *sometimes*, it still crashes at least 50% of the time.  When ui2 does show, the menus are garbled and unusable and there is no PSS showing.  This is what I always used to get with ui2 on the b202, this issue is fixed in a newer intel driver but requires a newer ubuntu to install.  I'm at a loss.  I'll go back to ui1 for now, it doesn't appear that I can get ui2 under any circumstances right now.
