Users / Re: Latest apt-get upgrade shows 530 files??
« on: November 04, 2011, 05:09:56 pm »
OK, if anyone else has this problem, most of the issues I experienced were from the lucid upgrade knocking out the dhcp server function of LMCE making my GC-100 non functional as well as other devices whose IP lease had expired during the power outage.

The way I fixed it was a bit messy but it may give you an idea of how to go about addressing it on your system should the need arise.
Since I could not restart the dhcp3-server the first thing I tried to do was remove it. Well, this also took out dce-router so that was not so good. I reinstalled dce-router and then tried to reinstall dhcp3-server but got a dependency error that stated that the wrong dhcp3-common file is installed--which is what I suspect the lucid upgrade did. So I removed the dhcp3-common file that was installed and installed the correct one, then reinstalled dhcp3-server. However, the server would not start and gave this error:

Setting up dhcp3-server (3.1.1-1ubuntu2.2) ...
Installing new version of config file /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server ...
dhcpd self-test failed. Please fix the config file.
The error was:
Internet Systems Consortium DHCP Server V3.1.1
Copyright 2004-2008 Internet Systems Consortium.
All rights reserved.
For info, please visit http://www.isc.org/sw/dhcp/
Can't open /etc/bind/rndc.key: Permission denied
invoke-rc.d: initscript dhcp3-server, action "start" failed.

So searching the internet, I found this fix:

I have added these two lines to the dhcp3 profile: /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.dhcpd3
/etc/bind/ r,
/etc/bind/** r,
After restarting apparmor

/etc/init.d/apparmor restart

I am now able to restart dhcp3 without any errors.

then

/etc/init.d/dhcp3-server restart

Which was true, but somehow eth0 had lost its ability to get an ip meaning I had a functional intranet but no internet. So I changed eth0 settings from DHCP to manual and filled them in, and then rebooted hoping for the best.

So far, so good. I don't know if LMCE recognized all the shenanigans I had pulled and reinstalled the correct files or if this actually worked on its on, but when I do an apt-get upgrade nothing shows up, dhcp is assigning addresses again, gc-100 works and I have learned my lesson to never ever upgrade unless you check it out first.

I guess I did not know how. I guess thought checking the box to share them somehow automatically brought them into the database. Happy to do it. Is there a link somewhere with the instructions?

Thanks for the update.

1. I too have an HD-PVR so it is good to know that it is not just me. I've been looking around on the web and it seems like the best fix is to transcode them from mpeg2 to avi and then they should play. I'll try it ASAP. It is just frustrating to have them mapped inside of the Video tab in LMCE and see a perfect picture but no sound.

However, my TV recordings play perfectly inside of mythTV with the libxine2 install so I'm not sure what you are referring to on that front.

2. I wasn't using a hub but thanks for the cautionary note. It seems like the "lucid" update changed things so that the gc-100 is no longer functional. If I plug the insteon PLM directly into a serial port it works fine.  I'm going to try reinstalling the gc-100 to see if that works.

Another bug that has turned up is the breaking of the DHCP function of LMCE: It will no longer assign IP addresses to devices but works fine if you manually enter an IP address or if the IP address for the device was already in the networking table. This may be a function of my particular machine and network manager being reinstalled by the update. I had to delete network manager to get my machine to work initially, so I will try doing it again and see if it fixes the problem.

I guess the bottom line for me is the question of whether there is any way to "repair" my installation of 8.10. I seem to remember that there was a way in 7.x but I wonder if anyone has tried it with the finished 8.10. Since all my data is on a separate drive I'm wondering if I just go in and reinstall on the LMCE drive if it will be smart enough to figure out where everything is or how much manual labor will be involved in getting it to see everything again.

Also, I'm still wishing there was a way to save all my custom templates.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

I removed the lucid reference in sources.list and so upgrade shows nothing to install or update.

I went in and fixed the sound/video issues by following the link for installing libxine2 and "downgrading" to phinigma's pluto-xine-player:

http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php/topic,11497.0.html

I had to apt-get install w32codecs after this to get certain files to work.

On that front the only thing that does not work is recorded programs from mythtv that show up in the video menu--the image is fine but there is no sound--this may be the flavor of mpeg file they use at myth?

My insteon devices keep switching the serial port after every restart so I'm not sure if that was due to the upgrade or the power outage corrupting something. I'm still trying to figure out how to handle this.

Other than that, I can't see anything else that is not working. But any suggestions would be greatly appreciated on how to reverse the "upgraded" files from the lucid depository.

Thanks!

After a power outage, I was unfortunately doing too many things at once and did not notice this lucid entry until I had already said "Y". What is the best way to undo the lucid modifications that this upgrade added to my LMCE? Sound from the MD through toslink is not working and it seems to have messed up Insteon control.

Many thanks for any advice.

I'm not sure where to put this, but I was having this same problem for a long time with the additional headache that when I downgraded alsa to 1.0.17 I lost my optical out on my realtek ALC888 sound card built into the motherboard. So it was either have the solo microphone and usb soundcards that could be used as squeezeslaves or have optical out. Looking at some posts that focused on this sound card it seemed that the problem might be alsa 1.0.23. So I downloaded and compiled alsa 1.0.24 on my lmce 8.10 setup and then rebooted. Curiously, even though cat /proc/asound/version still showed 1.0.23, something was fixed: I had optical out sound and I could see my usb sound card through squeezeslave -L. I'll keep testing to see if this broke something else but for now I am a happy camper. Just thought this might help someone in the same boat.

Installation issues / Roaming Orb and iPad2
« on: September 29, 2011, 09:56:22 pm »
Has anyone noticed that the default screen orientation on the iPad2 for Roaming Orb is upside down--if you are using the magnetic iPad cover? It will not reverse if you orient the ipad the other way. (This is not the case for the Dianemo orbiter, but since the Dianemo orbiter is significantly slower I would prefer to use the Roaming orb.)

Is there an easy work around for this or do I need to make a request to the developer to reorient the default screen 180 degrees?

Thanks in advance!

Seems to work for me as well. Thanks!

BTW, the second step of installing the pluto-xine-player....deb is no longer needed as it appears that the most recent upgrade of 8.10 contains a later version. This step downgraded the file so I did an apt-get install pluto-xine-player which seems to have installed the later version.
One error I got with this step is that "Alsa not installed yet. Can't run alsaconf" is this correct? Should I install alsa and then re-run it? Thanks again.

Hmm...I am wondering if this might be a networking problem, at least in part, where the Orbiter never gets delivered to the screen so all you see, in my case, is the mouse pointer. Do you use a Realtek network card with a R8168/9 driver by any chance? Kind of grasping at straws here...

25
Wow. How long ago did you upgrade? This sounds scary. Is there a way to downgrade to previous version that worked within LMCE while this gets sorted out?

Some more snooping around and I found that the orbiter thinks it is doing its job. Here is a section of the OrbiterGen.log.1 in /var/log/pluto when I did a Full Regen all orbiters web admin command at the suggestion of posde:

10      03/10/11 8:19:54.708            Generation started <0xb458c9a0>

10      03/10/11 8:19:55.427            Locking orbiter before Generating 176 <0xb45db9a0>

"21" is the core/hybrid MD and "176" is a standalone MD. So the orbiter is merrily doing its job apparently even though the screen is showing nothing in my case. So now I am wondering if it is the hand off to the next step in the launch Manager process that is freezing things up in my case. Any thoughts?

26
Thanks for the input. I have rebooted several times and tried to do a Full Regen on each orbiter but they are always stuck at the point where the bar shows 100% and the caption is: Regen Status: Done. Underneath that it says "Orbiter Generation in Process" and every few seconds the screen refreshes on the web admin but nothing changes. I am attaching a screen shot to let you see what is going on.  Any ideas greatly appreciated.

27
Thanks for the suggestion. I should have mentioned that this was on a core/hybrid.

Out of curiosity, I updated/upgraded a MD to see if it was just on the core. Nope, now my formerly functional MD is hung on "Done rebuilding NIS Cache."

Any suggestions as to how to troubleshoot this? I really don't want to have to reinstall as everything was working perfectly until this upgrade.

Could some of the mysql databases need to be rebuilt?

Many thanks again

My formerly perfectly functional 8.10 loads all the way to "Orbiter Generation Done" and then hangs with a mouse pointer on a black background after I did a apt-get update/ upgrade today. I tried the black screen approach and successfully loaded the correct screen and audio settings again. So that is not it.

From Web admin /Wizard/Devices/Orbiters it says all the MD orbiters have regen'd 100% but it just hangs there (I deleted the iphone orbiter because it was getting stuck at 5%.) Web admin will not let me do a quick reload router or any other function that might break it free.

Does anyone else have this experience or suggestions about how I might fix it? Many thanks in advance..

I've been using mine as a separate AV device that gets loaded from the media tab. I used the blu-ray template as I had already installed awkward TV on it (OK, I cheated and used http://firecore.com/ but you can also hack it yourself if you search on awkward TV) and the crystal HD card ($50) so that you can get 1080p from it. XBMC comes installed with the firecore version so I've been using the apple TV for blu ray movies and h264 files from mythTV that LMCE does not currently play through the XBMC player. This gives me a variety of video streams such as TWIT, TED, Bild.de etc. that are built in. Also found a stream from XBMC to watch what is going on in the Middle East through Al Jazeera English which is a BBC-based service and have to agree with Hilary that this is real journalism. Translating the remote to LMCE has been a bit challenging so I generally use one of the free xbmc remotes for iphone or android. If you got it for free, it is definitely worth using as a way to extend LMCE's media reach.

Hope this helps.

As a fan of both LMCE and XBMC I am interested in hearing more about how you have approached integrating these two.

Because of some of the current limitation in LMCE (not playing blu ray and MythTV recordings, primarily) and some of the easy-to-access media built into XBMC (German News programs, the entire This Week in Tech lineup, the TED conferences) that will stream to your computer with only a few mouse clicks of setup, I added XBMC Dharma to my LMCE 8.10 box as an application by just following the ubuntu and linux build directions from XBMC's website and the LMCE Wiki.

So far, nothing seems to have been broken in LMCE, most of the USB/UIRT remote commands work automatically and I have added one more thing I can do from my LMCE box. As a plus, I tell XBMC where my blu ray player drive is and where the MythTV recordings are in the file structure and I can play them with very good quality. It is a win-win as far as I can tell. Although I am technically limited in terms of developing for LMCE and what I have done still needs to be tested more extensively I would be happy to contribute any way I could to see these two become more integrated. Perhaps the Hulu Player integration that was so well done by tschak909 could be a template for such a project? At present, I don't know enough to conceptually be able to begin. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.
