Users / Konsole item in computing menu,... help please...
« on: September 05, 2012, 03:51:15 pm »
Over the weekend,... I had created a menu item in the computing screen for the konsole terminal emulator. After a bit of fussing with it and figuring it out, I got it to the point where it would launch the konsole application, but it would only flash on the screen for a split second and "disappear" underneath the onscreen orbiter. I could access it only if I switched to the KDE desktop. The reason I created it, in the first place, was to not have to drop out to the KDE desktop to get a virtual terminal (or have to switch ttys).

I'm pretty sure I got the WM_CLASS correct,... And I tried it a couple of different ways,... So, if anyone has any tips or pointers, suggestions, etc... I'd appreciate it.

Users / mysqld CPU spike issue still around...
« on: August 26, 2012, 02:49:49 am »
I am running and apt-get upgrade on my core and MDs (MDs got done relatively quickly)...

I was trying to shut down unnecessary things sucking up bandwidth or traffic on the whole network when I just happened to run a top on the Core, to see if there was anything hogging up system resources that might possibly slow down the upgrade,... That's when I noticed the CPU pegged near 100% on the mysqld... (turns out it had nothing to do with the slowness,... apparently that's just my connection to the LinuxMCE servers)...

I searched the forums and noticed that this appeared back in the 810 version, ... and that several people had noticed that if you kill mysqld it doesn't hog CPU cycles when it respawns... So I did that, and whataya know... same thing on 1004... a well behaved, respawned mysqld after killing it... (of course it had nothing to do with download efficiency) .

Does anyone know what's causing this??

Wiki / Started a Glossary page on the Wiki
« on: August 21, 2012, 06:22:21 pm »
I started a glossary page on the wiki, for explaining basic terms to new users, especially those unfamiliar with media centers, home automation, etc.

It can be found by searching for the word, "Glossary," in the search field on the wiki.

There is no substantive content there yet. The idea is to explain things like; what 1080p is, what an ATA is, what DHCP is in very basic terms, what a network switch is, what a script is, what the various wireless standards are (and maybe the frequencies they operate at in various countries), etc.

Ideally, it shouldn't be a place for editorializing. But rather it should be; simple, factual explanations of things that the uninitiated may not know. Internal & external links should be encouraged.

I figured it would be a good idea. Please contribute. Thanks.

Users / Diskless MD in VirtualBox as an Orbiter?
« on: August 08, 2012, 12:19:54 am »
Has anyone tried this?? ... Setting up a diskless media director in VirtualBox on a portable PC (laptop, netbook, X86 Tablet) and using it as an Orbiter...

I was toying with this idea in my head... since there a number of things that people (and I) would like with orbiters, like; media playback, updating/refreshing sooner, full communication control, etc.

I see from the wiki that Jamo had used a Fujitsu Stylistic 3500 as a limited media director/Orbiter,... but was wondering if anyone had done this with a VM,... and whether you were able to hack the shutdown to allow for suspend or hibernate, in order to bring the virtual machine up faster.

If anyone has done this, have you created a fake room for the device, so that it wouldn't change another media director's output by default?

I'm going to give it a go, but if anyone has beat me to the punch, I'd love any tips you might have.

Wiki / Added hardware page for Obi110 ATA
« on: August 03, 2012, 05:24:46 pm »
I've added a page in the wiki for the Obihai Obi110 ATA. It's a POTS to VOIP bridge, similar to an SPA3102. If anyone has one of these, and had been able to get it working within LinuxMCE, please edit the wiki page to reflect what you did to make it work,... I haven't configured mine yet. Thanks.

I am considering making minor readability edits to the first page of LinuxMCE User Manual page...

Things like sentence flow, minor terminology (e.g.: over-use of the term "wireless"), maybe organizing a thing or two into bullet points,... Maybe an intro paragraph explaining what LinuxMCE is, for concept...

I do not intend to alter, delete or add any substantive content or make changes to fundamental structure, at least at this time...
Making it read like a typical product user manual could be a future goal.

If anyone has suggestions/concerns,... please post them here,... Posde has commented to the effect that we should use the forums to discuss, wiki for edits... And that makes perfect sense.

I have started a Talk page for specific edits (for instance; if you have a suggestion and wish to show it against the current or revised, for comparison)...

http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Talk:User_Manual

Since Wikis are "living" documents, edits should all be reversible, so there shouldn't be a great harm in minor making changes,... But my intent is to make slow incremental changes and encourage others to do the same. With the Talk (or Talk pages, plural) page we can compare proposed edits that may cause controversy or that may upset/irritate someone who worked hard on a particular section, and would prefer it a certain way.

Above all I would like to keep things democratic (in the apolitical sense) and civil. If anyone feels strongly about a partucular issue or topic, please let your opinion be known. We can discuss it here, observe comparison edits in the Talk page,... and decide together how to address them.

For now, I will be going paragraph to paragraph on the first page of the User manual, and make minor changes I think will improve readability... Let me know how you like (or do not like) them...

Thanks, all...

Users / New Android powered device, Ouya, has possibilities
« on: July 10, 2012, 05:31:45 pm »
This new Android powered "console" device has some real possibilities,... and will be pretty much completely open for developers...

More powerful than a Raspberry PI,... more hackable too...

Imagine this thing (or a successor version) running the Qorbitor, or even as a DCE router controlled mini-MD (with some kind of App plug-in for Android devices),... Wow!

Check out the Ars Technica article about the new Kickstarter announcement:

Users / Are Akonadi or Nepomuk used in LinuxMCE 10.04 at all?
« on: June 12, 2012, 10:31:01 pm »
Are Akonadi or Nepomuk used in LinuxMCE 10.04 at all (other than the KDE desktop, that is...)? MDs? Core?

Just looking for some potential ways to reduce sluggish MD performance...

Users / HSM100 sensor sensitivity
« on: May 31, 2012, 08:59:43 pm »
Does anyone know how sensitive the HSM100 multi sensor's IR motion detection is?

For example,... would a large-ish cat set it off?

See below for smart home's page on the sensor I'm talking about:

Users / Any way to change or add additional keyboard commands???
« on: May 07, 2012, 06:11:50 am »
Is there any way to change the default or add additional/alternate keyboard commands on an MD??

I have a handful of these ipazzport trackpad/keyboards (see attachment), and they have no function keys...

I have some rii Wireless Keyboard/Trackpads with built in IR remote coming (3 of them), but it would be nice to keep or get the other ones working.

I finally got to the point where I am setting up my MDs. My living room MD took a little bit of manual reconfiguration. The (1080i/p) TV, through it's VGA port wasn't picked up in the video/audio setup, so I had to manually edit the entry in the web admin, the xorg.conf, and tell the web admin to order a rebuild of the MD. Then it re-ran the setup on reboot, picking up the resolution. Same for SPDIF optical sound output. Now working fine (actually stutters habit on 1080i live TV, but that'll be the subject of another thread).

The MD in our master bedroom has TV out out to that TV through VGA as well. But that TV's native resolution is 1360x768, and doesn't seem to work through the video/audio setup. I tried 720p, which is the closest thing to that 1360x768 native resolution, but no dice. Through the KDE desktop, I CAN get the native resolution working.

Is there any way to add an 1360x768 option to the video resolution setup options, and how?? Or, alternatively, how do I manually change the resolution without messing up LinuxMCE's features like Orbiter generation, making the system change them automatically, messing them up, at the video/audio setup stage, etc??

PS: This is a 10.04 net script install. I spent a lot of time manually fixing channels up, so I'd just as soon stick with it, and not try a DVD install.

Feature requests & roadmap / General and Off Topic Sub-forum
« on: April 01, 2012, 02:00:03 am »
Would we be able to have have a general (including off-topic) sub-forum on the boards here??? I think it would be a good thing for helping people to relate to one another with potentially off-topic discussions (with grounds rules of course,... i.e.: not politics, religion, adult topics nor personal attacks, etc.). I also think it would be a good place to have a pinned into thread or sub-board where users can post a little about themselves,... why they are interested in LinuxMCE, etc.

I see this on many forums, and generally, where people get to give a little of their background, there is more harmony and understanding. When you understand a person's viewpoints and life experience, it's easier to find common ground...

I cannot get MythTV in LMCE 1004 to play Live (or any) TV. I am using 2 HDHomeruns (I pulled a WinTV-HVT-1600 from the system as it was unnecessarily complicated to get set up, might consider a swap/trade of 2 of these cards for a recent model HDHomerun or two). Video chipset is a GMA 3100 series, running on a 4GB RAM Duel Core Intel. Channel scanning (apparently) works. The channel list is populated. But, no TV Playback (or recording). AVI playback (Xine) works. Additionally, I am not getting any of my ripped mv4 files to play (vast majority of my rips are AVIs, just a handful of mv4s made with Handbrake). The HDHomeruns can pull up TV on any non-MD connected to the internal network (X/K/Ubuntu 10.04 systems running HDHomerun Gui-config & VLC). So the two HDHomeruns are working.

On a (somewhat) related matter, I am not getting a net-boot on the only MD that I have tried. The system is running underneath a MCV Vera (first router on the system, with the LMCE core as the second) as an inside network, with a Linksys WRT54G running off the Core (DHCP turned off, and the HDHomeruns were automatically recognized). Wireless devices attempting to connect to the core are able to access the LMCE web admin panel at 192.168.80.1.

Any ideas???
