Sounds like a good thing that you are doing!

Could I suggest that you create "mini-articles" for each of your steps, then you can both reference them and include them in your own personal page, and also iinclude them on the appropriate page in the main Wiki.

The problem with putting all information on "what I did" pages is that someone might have to read all of the user pages to get an answer- say you talk about how to get the VFD running on your case, and someone else talks about how a particular motherboard has a procedure to get the NIC working.

It'd be good to be able to look at the "motherboard" pages and the "cases" pages to get the info I (as a new user) needed instead of trawling/searching through individual pages.

I actually did this restructuring for the Newbie packs a while ago, then all of the editing was lost in a wiki crash.  My reasoning was that it was silly to have the same information repeated in both the "core" and "hybrid" wiki pages, it made a lot more sense to just have them both reference a single paragraph about (say) using the Pioneer DVR-216 as a recommended component.  Makes future editing easier too (one place to change info not 2).

This is done already by properly categorizing the content in your personal wiki page. I.e. if you have an Standard Def setup, it should be categorized as such. This makes the user setups section easier to navigate as you can narrow down what specifically your looking for.

sounds like there might 2 or 3 noobs that are willing to do some documentation of their experiences. how bout a guide and step by step to get us going in the right direction to how we can build upon what is already here. create mini articles, categorize, reference. How and where my friend?

i got to watch live tv through my linuxmce today

the core system as a whole is very rough. but for the maaaaaaaaaaany hours and reinstalls i have so far endured. they apparently were worth it.

challenging indeed and worth venturing further into.

once i get a grasp on what i have done i hope to be able to contribute to the community, thank you every one who has asked questions as well as those who have answered them. this has allowed me to find solutions to what was ailing my build.

i am getting better with this

started computer with live cd

sudo mount /dev/sda2  allowed me to get to drive

sudo kate    allowed me to open files i needed, in this case interfaces first and then looked at xorg there were 3 copies of it. renamed the current one to version 3. renamed the second to xorg and rebooted.

came back up with with wireless and a screen that i can see

in addition to it recognixzing the tv card and asking me for the tv guide login info.

very excited now.

well i sudo'd when i did this

sudo apt-get install wpasupplicant

but to make the .conf file i had just opened a blank kate editor and copied the example from a non protected, as compared to wep or wpa, example and tried to save it and got shot down

sure i'm easy i'll try that. when i did though i had to create a new wpa_supplicant.conf file for the etc folder. since there was not one. but when i went to save it i was told i did not have authorization for folder /home/linuxmce

figured i would log off and specifically log in  as that user. thinkin windows log out screen. machine would not log out though. just kind of did nothing.

hi
so i had a perfect install of 7.10 on an old machine i had laying around
networkmanager and wireless worked fine
then i installed linuxmce and i think that went fine as well

now when i go back into kubuntu networkmanager was not there. i tried to run it from the console and it said i needed to install it. i did.
now when i click on it i do not see the list of wireless available. added my connection manually but it does not.

also to note that this is like the 20th attempt to configure both of these on this machine. in previous attempts i did not have this issue. other ones but not this.

so i started system from live cd and i can connect to my wireless.

what i would like to try is to shorten my network interface file to

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

which is what is on the live cd and mentioned in several threads. but when i make the changes and try to save i get no write access message.
i tried getting to the file while in live cd but it said i did not have access to the drive that has the file.

what is the proper way of doing this?

hi
am able to log in but when i try to change the pvr capture card. it says "you are not authorized to modify installation."

any thoughts.
