Feature requests & roadmap / Re: Media Sharing

Why don't you guys talk about actually how to integrate it into the system, instead of duct taping it on?

Come on guys, stop thinking like typical Linux users.

-Thom

Wouldn't one core detect and add the samba share from another core if they are on the same network? Then add a Copy file to other directory in the media files sync web page (instead of only a move file to other directory). We could browse the remote share and copy media to local disk. That may be the easiest way to integrate it into the system.

Yes, it is possible .... just not sure how the pnp would play with it... however you need to read gollywog's post more carefully, he clearly states that he wants to connect the cores over the Internet

Is there a way we can do some sort of media sharing accross cores? Ie have 2 or more cores connected over the internet via VPN or similar, then allow them to select media they like and copy to there local core? Also at the same time being able to restrict what media they can see to copy?

Gollywog
Dude, I know it is over the internet - why else would he need VPN? My point is he isn't streaming - he wants to select and copy. Who cares about the bandwidth at that point. Let it copy all day - he never said he needed it to copy quickly, lol ;-) I always like the most simple approach, but Thom's way is better I'm sure!

Hell yeah, let's use a Nintendo DS or netbook as a MD. J/K! :)

An ARM based PC inside a 65" LCD with 1,000,000:1 contrast and LED backlighting? A dream!

You could probably use a linux or winblows laptop with a webcam and snapshot software - set the save directory to the public LinuxMCE samba or NFS share. I am sure a developer could give you a command to run on the console to add a picture to pluto's screensaver (rather than having to go through the web admin). You could then set up cron to run that command every 30 seconds or so. I think it could be done pretty easily.

And I agree, a very creative idea!

Just found a couple good articles.

I am looking forward to the Allio Extreme that will boast an NVIDIA GPU and "be able to play Crysis." And there is talk of a cheaper Allio with Ubuntu!

I am getting excited!!

I noticed that too, but I may drop by my local tigerdirect and check it out. I was looking more for form factor and convenience as well as cheap.

I hope this is the start of a new trend of pairing a large LCD HDTV and PC. If anyone runs across a similar platform, please post for comparison. I would love to see a quaity LCD paired with a decent nVidia Chipset PC - would be a great platform for a MD.

Saw this today. I would love to see more of these, and have a feeling we will with the popularity of home media centers. If I can convince the wife, I may pick one up and give it a try. Hell, it comes with a 30-day trial!

Colin. I see where you are coming from, but VPN can put you on the internal network. It really depends on the setup. Toss openvpn on the core and you're all set. Also, gollywog didn't ask about streaming media over the WAN, but rather how to browse, select, and copy the media from one core to another. That can be done easily since samba and perms are already set up; there is no need to export anything. Just don't over complicate it.

Users / Re: Is HDMI supposed to look worse?
« on: March 09, 2009, 05:57:45 am »
VGA is analog, basically RGB with some other data thrown in. DVI can be both Analog and digital. HDMI is pure digital, with no loss in quality. You can't convert an analog DVI to HDMI. I would suggest using VGA, unless you convert DVI-D to HDMI, and are sure your GPU and TV are both configured correctly.

720p looks the same for the most part with either VGA or HDMI, but it really depends on the TV. But you will need HDMI (and a good GPU) if you want 1080p.

Use samba to share the media between cores. Use the private user file structure to control permissions. If you are familiar with Linux, you could easily make this happen with the native Linux and LinuxMCE tools - all are already configured.

Users / Re: Over 3000 mounts for USB hard drive?? Core hanging...
« on: March 08, 2009, 10:28:49 pm »
So I think I found the trigger. Anytime I copy or move a lot of media from one mount to another, this happens. It doesn't matter if I do it through files & media on the web admin, or do it on the command line. It hangs the core and I have to reboot. Quite frustrating actually.

"general issue" means "everyone suffers from it"! This is demonstrably not the case. A couple of people so far out of hundreds or even thousands. Yes there could be a bug somewhere that combined with your specific circumstances causes this to happen, which still isn't a general issue. Conceivably their could now be a version issue with the codecs due to a recent update - but 1) I thought the codecs were actually downloaded from a local deb cache (could easily be wrong here) and 2) every new install should now have this issue - we should keep our ears/eyes open for this possibility...

Believe me, the error message explained it. It was and is a general issue for whoever actually would try to install the w32codecs, which I guarantee wasn't 1000s of people, lol. The package either wasn't in the repository or the server was down. I was just trying to help.

Oh, and "general issue" means it can generally affect anyone, not everyone.

I figured I would wait for someone else to complain, rather than argue the point ;-)

You'll have to follow the instructions in the link above to get it installed.

That is great news! Thanks for the replies. I'm glad I asked before I tried it!

I can't wait for 0810! I am bringing up more hardware to try the alpha build.
