Users / Help me choose a reciever IR vs RS-232
« on: November 20, 2008, 04:40:34 pm »
Hey topic says most of it, I am gonna throw down on a new AV reciever. I currently own a sony that does the standard Dolby 5.1 etc but it doesnt do HDMI inputs and it only has 1 optical input (i currently have a manual switch for my optical inputs). I will be using three input devices in this room.
1.Cable box- HDMI connection sound/audio for HD cable
2.Xbox360- component connection for video/ optical connection for audio for gaming
3.MD for LMCE- VGA for video/ optical to receiver for sound
I will need the following outputs also.
    1. 5.1 speaker outputs (or something else like 7.x that is compatible with 5.1)
    2. additional speaker outputs for a different sound zone
    3. HDMI output to TV

So LMCE can control all of these inputs I would like everything routed through the receiver which will be controlled by IR or RS-232, this is the main dilemma. Is RS-232 worth the extra money or is IR just as capable? It seems like the cheapest receiver that has the things I need with RS-232 costs twice as much. Also I want the receiver HDMI out to be the only cable going to the TV (except the VGA).

Feature requests & roadmap / New app for Iphone came out... Air Mouse
« on: November 18, 2008, 09:19:52 pm »
ok so I have seen a few posts about iphones as orbiters, and while that would be nice with the touchscreen I am sure that it would be much more involving than getting this new app to work. The app basically turns the iphone into a gyro mouse with some buttons on the touch screen. There is a server app that you download to the PC that runs it along with the iphone app, looks like right now it only supports MAC's and Windoze.....

http://www.mobileairmouse.com/

All I need is someone smarter than me who owns an iphone to lead the way on making this thing work with LMCE or tell me there is no way it will work and crush my dreams.

Users / NAS question
« on: November 17, 2008, 07:27:12 pm »
having never owned a network storage device before I have a question. Assuming that I go with something like

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822155009

with 2 1TB SATA drives, is there a way to format this to where LMCE can use it along with some Windoze boxes? What would be the best way to go about this?
Thanks,

Installation issues / MD always tries to boot as AMD64
« on: November 15, 2008, 07:26:28 pm »
hey guys, I now have 3 pc's successfully netbooting, however my fourth and last one keeps getting hung up after it announces itself to the router and starts diskless setup and dhcp setup. I looked on the admin page and noticed that this MD's image had was listed as AMD64, I changed this to i386 rebuilt the image reloaded router etc, rebooted and on the MD boot screen it still calls itself an AMD64 right before it says "stopping all MD's" "rebooting"
and it just keeps rebooting at this same spot. Is there something else that I need to do to get this MD to show up properly as an i386?
Thanks,
Krys

all I need is 2ch or line out for listening to music (the motherboard has none), i prefer it not to be fancy, I just want it to plug and play. I checked the wiki but there were only a few listed and almost all of them had some issues or were 5.1ch etc... I would love some recommendations that you have experience with.
Thanks,
Krys

Users / Raise your hand if you run a Giga network
« on: November 12, 2008, 11:44:39 pm »
I am trying to decide early in the project if it would be worth it to jump to a Giga network, is this kind of transfer speed even necessary? would it make more sense just to stick with 10/100?

it sports 2 3.0ghz processors and up to 24 GB of RAM and a gigabit card!... I am installing Kub 7.10 as we speak and then LMCE to make sure its compatible before I lug it home.... either way I can surely find a use for it even if its not as a core

Users / Can I use my Flikr account for the screensaver?
« on: November 10, 2008, 10:48:22 pm »
Instead of, or along with the default flikr photos, is it possible to auto download pics from my personal flikr account? My family and my wifes family all share a single flikr account and I would like to have these images auto download like the default LMCE ones. I am not sure if this is possible, if it is where would l change the path at?

Installation issues / Internal Router IP address
« on: November 08, 2008, 07:00:24 pm »
Does the core change the default IP address on the internal router? I configured my router using 192.168.1.1 and today i cant get back to that same IP address. I can however get to the external router which is 192.168.2.1, any ideas? is there a command i can use to tell me what the IP address is? I am trying to access it from a computer that is wired directly into it, i need to get back in to set up my wireless network.
Thanks,

Installation issues / Net Boot issues
« on: November 08, 2008, 01:06:01 am »
Hey guys need a little more help. I have this in another thread but its under a different title. I am trying to net boot for the first time to a clean install from DVD core unit. It has 2 NIC's one External, the other internal connected to a NetGear Wireless Router. The two different PC's that I have tried to net boot both get hung at the same spot every time although it seems a different spot for each. Here is the last messages that come across before they freeze or restart.

(PC 1)
RUNNING DHCP_config.sh
then it said md stopping all devices and just restarts the process all over again, getting hung at the same spot.

(PC 2)
/init: .: 1: Can't open /tmp/net-eth0.conf
[34.615491] Kernel Panic-not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

Here is how my Core has the NIC's Listed
eth0 192.168.80.1 Manual
eth1 192.168.2.2 dhcp

from what I have read these might be transversed but I am not sure how to go about fixing it, switch the cables (couldnt be that easy)?

So any ideas?
Thanks,
Krys

Users / LMCE Demo video
« on: November 07, 2008, 06:32:56 pm »
Am I the only one who cant find the download for the HD version of the LMCE video? I can watch the one on goole but it sucks, when I click the link to download and watch the HD version it takes me to the site that has just the install files... am I missing something? Is the video mixed in with the installs somewhere?

Installation issues / MCE install on MD running 7.10
« on: November 07, 2008, 06:07:41 am »
Media Director is a laptop that I have Kubuntu 7.10 installed on hardwired into the internal LAN running off of the cores 2nd nic. I tried to do a network boot with no success, maybe my donor nic card doesnt support PCX... either way I tried to install LCME using the disc. Everything seemed to go as it should, it saw the core machine on my network and told me I should install as a MD to which I agreed. It did some install stuff, told me the install was complete and to reboot. I rebooted and MCE is no where to be found. No icon on the desktop, its not under media from the start menu??? any ideas? I tried installing again just for giggles and same outcome. Let me know what you think.
Thanks,
Krys

Oh ya, it also never prompted me for Disc 2, all the install instructions I read said it would prompt for disc two so this might be part of the problem.

Installation issues / orbiter twitching/flashing
« on: November 06, 2008, 05:06:15 pm »
Got my core unit set up and running 7.1 and MCE set up went smooth but I havent had a network connection yet to download any updates. One thing I have noticed is that when I run the orbiter it has a strobe effect (flashing/twitching) I can still see and access the menu options, but something is obviously wrong. I selected KDE desktop to minimize the orbiter, sometimes when I go back to it it works just fine, mostly it strobes. I am using an ATI video card which I would assume is the problem, however when I am in the MCE Launch mgr and run the UI diagnostic tool everything seems to run fine. Either way do you guys think it is my video card? should I just run the basic UI till i spring for a Nvidia card?
Thanks,
Krys
