Users / Slow NVidia drivers? Geforce 8200
« on: December 11, 2008, 06:46:15 pm »
This is with an onboard Geforce 8200 on a MSI K9N2G Neo motherboard with 4GB of RAM.

I still haven't gotten to the point where I would install LinuxMCE yet, I finally got Software RAID5 working (I followed this thread and it mostly worked the first try http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=699075).  Be sure to use the Alternate CD if you go that route.

I used NVIDIA-Linux-x86-177.80-pkg1.run and it compiled its own driver.

It seems to work, but there is no nvidia splash screen, KDE doesn't think there are any restricted drivers loaded, and if I go to the Hardware section it says it is using the VESA driver, yet it says Driver: nvidia.  glxgears only gives 1400fps and it should be 10x that for this card!  nvidia-settings works, it shows the card and shows it is using 512MB of ram which makes me think it is using the driver.  Right now when it goes to shut down the "fade" effect takes forever to scroll down the screen it is so bad!

Any ideas to confirm if it is even using the nvidia driver?  I found a horrible thread about how 8000/9000 cards don't work properly in Ubuntu at all!

Any help is appreciated.

This is a fresh installation on a MSI K9N2G Neo motherboard.  I have both the VGA and HDMI connected to monitors.  It doesn't seem to detect the NVidia 8200, so I figured I'd set it to use "nv" or "vesa" for now in xorg.conf... only I can't get there!

It appears that KDM is automatically trying to reset itself after about 5 seconds, and I can't Ctrl+Alt+Fx to get to a screen (since KDM restarts before I finish logging in).  I finally was able to get a login prompt and try to sudo /etc/init.d/kdm stop.... and it doesn't stop!

How the heck can I get it to stop?  It only seems to show the text on the VGA output.

Users / CCTV or IP Camera?
« on: December 02, 2008, 08:57:37 pm »
I'm trying to decide between CCTV with a Bluecherry 8 or 16-port PCI card (about $170) or if I should use TCP/IP cameras.  I'd like to have at least 2 outdoor cameras and at least 4 internal cameras.  Any thoughts?

Users / VoIP with LMCE
« on: December 02, 2008, 05:45:38 pm »
I'm trying to piece together a nice LMCE setup, and I'm at the part where I need to choose a VoIP provider (I am near Boston MA, so USA provider needed) and get phones and such.  Most of the phone posts in the forum here don't have many replies and it seems not many people are using the phone features (from what I can tell).

I understand that I can use the LMCE systems as phones with a microphone and their speakers (which is excellent) but I have a few questions that I couldn't find in the forum.

Is there a particular provider I should/shouldn't use?  I am only planning on one phone number and to use the LMCE box for voicemail, and occasionally have it forward to my cell.

Can I use an orbiter as a phone?

I see that the Cisco 7970 is a popular phone due to it also being able to be an orbiter (which is nice), are there any other phones that can also be orbiters?

If I also want just a cheap IP phone, will any Asterisk compatible phone work?

I saw a post about a "doorphone" - this sounds like an excellent feature and I'd like to do this, are there any known compatible hardware cameras for this?  I'd like the call to "ring" all the systems in the house when the doorbell is pressed.  If there aren't any specific products for this, would I just use a normal CCTV or IP camera and motion triggering?

Any other suggestions for phone stuff?

Users / Fujitsu C-500 tablet as orbiter?
« on: November 21, 2008, 04:59:12 pm »
Does anybody know if these would work as an orbiter?  They have a USB port so I was thinking of putting a USB wireless adapter into it.  They seem to run Windows 2000 so I was thinking they might be a cheap orbiter solution.

Users / Newbie question about where media is stored
« on: November 20, 2008, 09:23:37 pm »
I know the core can show media that is stored on it at any station, but what if I were to plug a usb drive into a MD, would it be viewable on any other station then?  Can I only plug that USB drive into the core to have it show up on other MD's?

Users / Hauppage PVR-500 question
« on: November 17, 2008, 08:00:30 pm »
Lets say the following scenario:

Bill wants to watch sports on a media director in one room, Jill wants to watch soaps on a media director in another.  If I have the dual-input PVR-500 can they both watch live tv at the same time?  I ask because I noticed that the PVR-500 doesn't appear to have dual sound outputs.

Users / Insteon or Zwave?
« on: November 14, 2008, 04:39:57 pm »
I'm near Boston MA USA, and I'm trying to decide between Insteon and Zwave.  I plan to use 3-4 light dimmer modules, a few switch controllers, 3 appliance modules, and I'd like room to grow.  I'm planning on having 4 rooms with LinuxMCE systems when I am all finished.  I understand Zwave is typically for EU, but it seems to be available here too.

Users / Thin clients? Specs?
« on: November 04, 2008, 08:56:31 pm »
I'm planning to have the primary LinuxMCE box in my basement, and thin clients behind each tv/display throughout my house.  I will have the TV tuner card in the primary system in the basement, but it won't have any actual display.  Would I need a nVidia card for this "basement/master" system or can I just use any old thing for now?  I was planning on having 3-4 thin clients throughout the house, one in the bedroom behind a flat panel like the video, one attached to a 20" monitor on a swingarm in the kitchen, and one on the ceiling underneath a projector in another room (possibly a 4th later).  I have a NAS now with a few TB in it so I'll just use that for storage for now.  I also plan to use some home automation stuff, I loved the part where it called the guy on his phone and showed him the picture.  I have some network cameras that I'll try and if they don't work I'll buy compatible ones.

My questions are:
1) What "slim" thin clients are there now that I can buy that will attach to the back of a 20" lcd monitor or behind a ~40" 720p plasma/lcd?  The Fiire Invisible 1" from the 0704 video appears to be discontinued and the 2" seems too large and has all the bells and whistles.  Plus I don't want it to auto-update (once it works don't mess with it).
2) What specs will I need to stream video to 3 remote systems for the "basement/master" system?  Ideally I'd like it to download torrents automatically to the NAS as well.

Users / Any other remotes support "follow me"?

I'm guessing not since I can't find any info about it.  How does that functionality work anyway?

Users / What hardware was used in the 0704 video?
« on: November 03, 2008, 10:50:02 pm »
I just saw this video:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2176025602905109829

Simply put: I want to duplicate this functionality, and I know that Linux is tricky with most hardware.  I want to buy the same exact thin clients, webpad, TV decoder, flat panel TV, remote, everything.  What did the creator of the video use?

If this question has already been asked please post a link the the answer, I couldn't find it!
