What about teaching some of use newbies that have no idea how to develop stuff.

I am 1 example.  I have the will but not the knowledge.  I know what an IDE is but tats as far as my programming skills go.  I am slowly learning though.

Are people like me of any use????
Can people like me help move things along??

hmmmmm

Sounds like way to techy for me personally.

Posde:  Do you know the names of any other utilities.  I might have friend a look at the source code and see if he thinks if it is a big or huge job to stripe it out and mod it up to have a go on my HTPC.  He is one of those people that loves a challange.  Might be best to give him a few diffeent utiliities to have a look at to have the best chance of actually getting some good code though.

Users / HOW DO I Equalise volume on all recordings?
« on: May 09, 2009, 01:44:42 pm »
Hello

I have an odd question.  I would like to equalise the volume across all recordings, movies, music.
The reason for this is because I currently have different recording that play at different volumes.  I even have different movies that play at different volumes.  I am not refering to a loud action movie-v- a quiet library scene.  I have one kids movie that I need o set the volume level on the TV to 25 and another kids movie that requires a TV volume level of 58.

I vaguely remember a function in Real Player 10, I think, that equalises the volume of all the music files to be the same.  I would like to try and do this for all my recording so that I can leave the TV volume alone.

This is important as the kids love both movies and they complain because the 'noise is broken' (they are 2 and 3 years old can drive the video but still cannot adjust the TV or HTPC volume)

I have a strange problem.

When I add in new video/video series for my kids I used a Windoze program to stripe out all the menus and link all the episodes together.  I havent found a linux app that does as good a job yet, still looking though.

I then just copy/paste from Windoze to my USB drive and then again to my HTPC into the videos folder (MythTV)
This normally works fine, but I have recently noticed a couple of the series are missing.

Is there anyway to ask the frontend to repopulate the video selections after I have added in the new videos?

I am sure that this is just a glitch with my system (I probably should stop playing around with it so much to 'see what happens'

Soory for the delayed reply Thom.  I have been away on holidays.

I am using mythvideo.  I use the standard install myth selections to try and keep things as simple as possible, until I learn more about this stuff.

I take it that mythvideo is possible a bad thing?  If yes what would you recommend that I use instead?

I have an odd problem.
When I rip a new video to my system and then search for the mediapics it finds the IMDB information and pops up the fetching poster for 0268380 (Ice Age).
It then sometimes comes up with an error of 'coverart exists for this file but could not be downloaded before the timeout expired' and sometimes not.
Under the Cover File in the metadata there is 'No cover'.
I do get all the other metadata (director, year, plot, rating, etc)

Any ideas how to fix this one?
Any ideas how to extend the timeout period in the hope of downloading the file?
I have an ADSL2 connection (approx (>100kBps of actual download speed with a 8MBps connection speed) so it should be able to download the file pretty quickly at my end.

I have have install a 2nd hard drive (HDD) to store all my videos on (movies/videos and tv recordings). I have changed the file path for the videos but I am blind and unable to find where to change the storage path for recordings.
I must be going blind.

Anyone know where to find/change the storage path for recordings?

Users / Trying to add in a 2nd automount HDD (Hard Drive)
« on: February 24, 2009, 06:48:20 am »
I am trying to add in a 2nd automount HDD
Items in bold are copy/paste from files/terminal/etc

At the bottom is the output from commands I though might help.
     sudo fdisk -l
     sudo blkid
     cat /etc/fstab
     df -h
     id

I am new to Linux and I am trying to setup a HTPC box.
The 2nd HDD is to increase the storage space for movies (1TB HDD).

I have edited the fstab to look like the following, last two line I added in. (The # is to keep it as a comment for the moment until I am sure things are correct)

# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
# /dev/sda1
UUID=7ddfc935-8b71-41f7-9655-3c6d47860d76 / ext3 errors=remount-ro 0 1
# /dev/sda6
UUID=3f968843-e1e6-43e8-a8ff-de2ca1f4b4f7 /var/lib xfs defaults 0 2
# /dev/sda5
UUID=d4c916b3-0e43-4a4e-b8b6-36abf1afd0f0 none swap sw 0 0
/dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0

#/dev/sdb1 LABEL="Movies"
#UUID="882c7288-47f6-4e23-b171-8727e67cfef0 /var/lib xfs defaults 0 2

The idea is to add in /dev/sdb1 to store my movies on. I have mounted in at /var/lib the same as mythtv  automagically did. The same reason for the 'xfs' format.  I will then redirect mythtv to store all video files to /dev/sdb1
Is this the right way to set this up? (location, format type, mount point, etc)

I also have a second problem here.
I want to increase the size of my 'ext3' boot partion to 50GB as it is curently only 11GB and getting full of games.
How do I do this?
In partion editor I cannot change the size of this partion /dev/sda1. I think that I need to unmount all the sda*'s before i can change thier size but i am not sure and I also dont know how to do this as it wont let me unmount anything in /dev/sda.
How do I increase the size of the /dev/sda1 partion?

Cheers

Installation issues / Re: Tuner Card's not being detcted at install
« on: February 07, 2009, 12:54:49 pm »
I have a re 2 divco card.  I cheated a little as I was completing a new install and had nothing to lose by installing other systems.  I installed Mythbuntu 8.10 (as LinuxMCE is based in Kubuntu) to test my card.  i had huge problems at first until my Mythbuntu download was crupt.  I redownloaded had no poblem following the instruction from a thread in the ubuntu forums.  All work perfect.

I then tried the LinuxMCE path again following the Wiki for the kernel update and steps from http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=7284.msg45955#msg45955.

Also read through http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=616103 for all the driver and remote information required.

Just step through it all and all will be good.
I am a newbie to Linux and it all went well for me.  (I do recommend copy/paste against typing though.  I had huge problems until i learn cntrl +shift + c(copy) or v(paste) in the terminal)

Repost if you need more assistance.

Do me a favor thought.  Write down all the steps (idiots guide) that way we can sent to Thom and get him to make up one of the thingys that allow this to all happen automagically, or at least type in the steps to this thread so as to let other have the full answer  I havent learnt how to do them yet.

Cheers

Dont know what it all means but as requested

*****@*****:~$

I am now trying to get the card working under Ubuntu 8.10.  (keep it simple for the newbie)  once i have got that down pact I shall move onto the next level of harder stuff (kerrnel build etc) unless 8.10 comes out before i get this darn card working.

Also have a problem from mplayer now.  does this help anyone understand what i am doing wrong?

Exiting... (End of file)

All this grief due to a 2 year old and a cup of juice.  Theres a lesson to learned here somewhere, but i just cannot see what it is, anyone spot the lesson
